I am not sure but I believe oyster farming has less negative impact on the environment than fish farming, unless fish farming is something like the one mentioned by Dan Barber in his TED talk:

I just returned to Ipoh for a visit and am dismayed to see the limestone hills being desicrated. I think it is a crying shame that the hills are being destroyed for a mere RM60 a tonne!

People don't realise that destroying the hills will have an effect on the environment and even climate of Ipoh. I believe the hills provide a cooling effect on Ipoh.

If proper tracks are built around some of the hills and beautiful gorges, I'm sure Ipoh can get a lot of revenue from tourists. Even more than selling the limestone! The gorge and waterfall you see as you drive in from KL to Ipoh on the highway just after the last rest stop should be investigated as a tourist spot. Perhaps make a look out there.
Whenever I return to Ipoh for a visit, I often wish that I could go for a walk around the hills and gorges.

Ipoh has a lot to offer but it can offer even more by opening it's doors to it's limestone hills, lakes and waterfalls. Imagine combining this with the wonderful selection of Malaysian cuisine it offers!

I live in Sydney, Australia and the councils there have tracks and proper trials through their bushland which are very popular with the locals and tourists. A great example is the Blue Mountains.

I do hope something can be done about stopping the destruction of the hills

That our natures reserves are virtually devoid of wildlife is an indication of the state/health of the nature reserves. If the forests in the nature reserves are less fragmented, less disturbed, wildlife will come back, naturally.

While littering habit can be a cause for flooding, flooding due to high tide is something else. If a area is not normally flooded in the past due to high tide, I see only 2 possibilities:

1. Water level has increased. (If this is so, the flooding should happen for coastal areas in the same latitudinal region when the tide is high.)

2. Land mass of that particular area has sunk.

The Playstation generation don't know how to play in longkang to catch fish or to catch fighting spiders in the jungle... they only know how to catch virtual fish on their iPhone or battle fantasy spiders on World of Warcraft. Education system emphasizes exam results, getting a degree, business, money making, economy, technology etc... nothing on sustainable living, enjoying the outdoors, responsibility for environment. Just look at all the litterbugs. Look at the people fishing at East Coast Jetty - catching even tiny groupers the size of my little finger to bring home to eat - I scolded one aunty and told her to put the tiny grouper back in the water and she completely ignored me. Should have just poured the bucket back in the water.

I think you have a small point in that not just shark fin soup should be targeted as the cause for decline in shark numbers but all shark fishing should be band until a full study canbe carried out to answer the question with regards to what is endangered & what needs to be done to ensure there future survival. Shark populations need to be given time to recover across the world including the EU with there destructive fishing methods

Also the Australian governments shark fishing guidelines are highly questionable, allowing continued fishing if areas like the great barrier reef while admitting they don't understand what its a sustainable quota for the area.

You are right about bycatch being a problem, I believe high bycatch fisheries should be shut down, it is morally wrong to kill and discard hundreds of animals in the hunt for a "targeted" species.

We are losing rhinos every single day, we've had up to 8 rhinos being killed in South Africa in one day before all because of some ancient belief that rhino horn can cure diseases. The people in the east are misguided and uneducated...these animals are dying brutal deaths, their faces are being hacked off while they are alive, left in the dirt to bleed to death.

IT HAS TO BE STOPPED.

Just yesterday morning, Themba, a rhino from the Kariega Reserve in the Eastern Cape, drowned in a water hole after 24 days of fighting to live after he survived a poaching attack. His face was hacked off but the drugs that they used to bring him down (before they hacked off his face) left him with a very bad leg, which ultimately led to him not being able to pick himself out of the watering hole - he has now died and it's such a waste of life for NOTHING!

With regards to illegal fishing at Labrador Nature Reserve (18 Jan 12 letter) & similar areas, it appears that many of the anglers are not fishing for recreation, but for food. Perhaps NParks might wish to consider conducting educational outreach activities on this issue at immigrant worker dormitories & worksites.

As for pervasive littering at parks/ PCNs (20 Jan 12 letter) & other public places, some of the cases might be attributed to the lack of litter bins, as well as the non-civic unwillingness of site users to carry their rubbish away with them.

With respect to the former reason, if the reluctance to provide sufficient litter bins at public areas is due to human & fauna security issues, perhaps NParks & the relevant authorities can consider deploying blast-resistant bins, as well as monkey-proof bins where applicable.

There are various products in the market that the authorities can consider.
