SINGAPORE: NTUC FairPrice saw a record 10.1 million plastic bags saved in 2015 through its bring-your-own-bag initiative.
According to a press release on Friday (Mar 18), this is a 10 per cent increase from the previous year. The scheme offers customers a S$0.10 rebate when they bring their own bags, with a minimum spending of S$10.
In conjunction with Earth Hour on Saturday, NTUC FairPrice will be donating S$12,500 to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the organisation behind the Earth Hour initiative. The donation will come from the sales proceeds of reusable shopping bags from Mar 12 to 19.
In addition, NTUC FairPrice will be switching off all non-essential lights, such as signage and refrigerator lightings in its stores, offices and distribution centres on the day.
"We invite more customers to join us in our green efforts to help create a sustainable environment as we commemorate Earth Hour, by switching off their lights and using reusable bags to shop," said Mr Koh Kok Sin, Chairman of FairPrice Green Committee.
