Parts of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve reopen to public

Sara Grosse, Channel NewsAsia 4 Apr 15;

SINGAPORE: Following the completion of phase one of restoration works, parts of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR) opened to the public on Saturday (Apr 4).

The nature reserve has been closed since September 2014. Visitors can only use the Main Road to reach the summit, which will only be open on weekends from 7am to 6pm.

Channel NewsAsia spoke to nature lovers who were at the reserve on Saturday and the majority said they appreciated the trail repair works on the Summit Path, as it is safer for elderly.

The path now allows visitors to choose steps of two different heights, according to their needs. Hand rails were also installed and slope stabilisation works between Kerung Hut and Simpang Hut have also been completed.

The works complete the first phase of a two-year long effort at the reserve to stabilise three slope sections, restore trails and upgrade visitor amenities.

In the next 18 months, phase two will see the BTNR undergo further restoration including stabilisation at two other locations, trail repairs as well as an upgrade of amenities including the Visitor Centre.
