‘Recession chic’: don't panic, carry on shopping

Can gloom spell upturn for planet?
As belts are tightened, consumers should shop not just less but better,and cherish what we buy

COCO Chanel once said that “luxury is a necessity that begins where necessity ends”.

Consultants Bain and Co think the current economic conditions mean you will focus more on the basic necessities, and so find luxury less necessary than ever.

They predict a 7 per cent fall in luxury sales next year. The impact will be uneven, with shoppers for more accessible brands such as Ralph Lauren thinking twice, while those who can afford to buy Hermes will likely still afford to do so.

Overall, many in the fashion industry are worrying about a fall-off in sales. But the real challenge is the falling appeal of consumption as an end in itself, as people reconsider their view of wealth and success.

“In grim times, it becomes distasteful or simply unfashionable to spend money on bling or what you might call conspicuous consumption,” said Mr Rory Sutherland, vice-chairman at advertising agency Ogilvy.

Mr Andy Lear of French advertising agency Publicis said awareness of the financial situation is accelerating a trend away from ostentatious brands. “People had already been looking for something more meaningful than just chasing cash and buying things that look flashy,” he said.

Online retailer Portero, a kind of eBay for luxury goods, is experiencing a massive upswing of people seeking to sell off their branded items.

As an environmental advisor, I like recycling. But this tells us something about how people who once loved luxury logos are changing their minds as the economic mood changes — and along with it, the cultural tone. What all self-respecting fashionistas will be thinking in the coming weeks is, what is the right outfit for an economic downturn? What will be ‘recession chic’?

My belief is that the real trend to emerge will be a return to authentic quality. Not just quality for the individual consumer, but quality for those involved in making it and for the wider environment. Why do I think that? Because you do, according to market research. New studies by famous agencies point to a wave of environmental awareness sweeping Asia. In September, agencies from WPP found that 31 per cent Chinese consumers now see the environment as a higher priority than the economy, as against 28 per cent in the United Kingdom and 17 per cent in the United States.

In addition, 69 per cent of the Chinese respondents said they expected to spend more on environmentally friendly products in the next year.

Earlier this year, the French market research agency IFOP found 60 per cent of people in China think about the environment when they shop. These studies show high levels of concern across Asia, from India to Taiwan.

A critical social, environmental role for luxury brands

How will that concern translate into fashion? To get an insight into that, we must understand the nature of the environmental challenge.

Today, humanity consumes more than five times the natural resources it did 50 years ago. We are using up more of the earth’s forests and fish, and testing its capacity to absorb our wastes more than it can cope with.

This means we need a different type of consumerism. It is time to shop less, shop better, look after what we buy, cherish it, and through that, embody a positive response to the challenges we face.

It is even time for companies to come out in their advertising and speak of this challenge, and call on us to buy less stuff, buy better stuff, look after it, eventually repair it, hand it on, or recycle it. If they can provide that kind of quality and lasting style, then they would be justified to encourage us to buy from them.

This is where the companies and brands that like to call themselves “luxury” have an important role to play.

They have the margins and the mandate from consumers for craftsmanship and lasting quality. In a world with high inequality, social challenges and an environmental crisis, the future of luxury is to be the best possible social and environmental brand.

The good news is that this take on ‘recession chic’ can be beautiful, creative and fun. That was the message from EcoChic, the recent ecological fashion show in Hong Kong, that featured top ecological designers as well as an auction of vintage luxury clothing. The dresses were stunning. It is a theme I will be exploring later this month at the Global Social Innovators Forum here in Singapore.

Some business leaders and public figures tell us, “don’t panic” and “carry on shopping”. That will fuel the economy and stave off economic disaster, we are told. It is the same story in cities worldwide: We have become the ‘shop or drop’ society.

What happened to buying things simply because we needed them, or wanted to give them to someone dear? How did we reach a point where the quantity of shopping mattered more than its quality?

An economic recession may help us think again about what matters in life, and how we express that through fashion.

At times like this, perhaps it is only right to wear our soul on our sleeve. Recession chic? It’s got to be eco-chic.

OVER a year ago, Mr Ian Bellhouse, 43, stopped taking public transport to work. But it is not by car that he goes from his Bukit Timah home to his Tanjong Pagar office.

Mr Bellhouse cycles to work and after the 20-minute journey, does not worry about being all sweaty, or where he can park his bike.

That's because of The Bike Boutique, a bicycle store at Amoy Street, where he parks his two-wheeler.

Then, he pops into the store's shower to wash up. Clean towels, toiletries and even a hair dryer are provided. A neat rack holds his work clothes.

All freshened up and ready, he leaves the store and walks down the street to the design consultancy he works at.

When he knocks off work, he just picks up his bike, puts his cycling gear back on and pedals home.

The Briton, who has been in Singapore for nine years, said he would never cycle to work if not for the bike lodging service. At monthly rates ranging from $80 to $115, a cyclist can park his bike in the store, use the showers and keep their items in a personal locker.

'It's fantastic,' said Mr Bellhouse.

Mr Alex Bok, 40, managing director of The Bike Boutique, left the banking industry he had worked in for over 10 years and started the business three years ago.

Boutique franchises in Kuala Lumpur and Manila opened recently and upcoming ones in Australia and other countries are in the pipeline.

Besides bike lodging, Mr Bok's store also sells, rents and services bikes. Over 60 cyclists use the bike lodging service.

And the native Dutch, who has lived in Singapore for 12 years, has even bigger plans. He dreams of putting bike lodging 'containers' outside major office buildings in the Central Business District, for cyclists to park their bikes.

These containers would resemble the outdoor food kiosks that dot the pedestrian walkways of Orchard Road.

Mr Bok said he is in talks with a gymnasium chain to allow cyclists to use their showers to freshen up.

But so far, building owners he has pitched his idea to are unenthusiastic.

The developer of a major office building in the Shenton Way area said no as it felt a container on its premises would be an eyesore.

Funding is also an issue, which is why he hopes that the Government, which aims to make Singapore more bicycle-friendly, will come on board. 'I don't have a million dollars to build 50 containers,' said Mr Bok, who has 10 employees.

He might have reason to be optimistic.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) chief executive Yam Ah Mee said last week that the LTA is looking to partner private vendors to set up public bicycle stands to rent out bicycles and offer services like washing of bicycles.

Mr Bok believes ideas like his will encourage more cyclists to ride their two-wheelers to work.

He is one among a growing fraternity of cycling enthusiasts here who feel it can be an alternative transport option.

While the hot and humid climate might not be the most ideal, some will tell you that Singapore is among the best Asian cities to cycle in.

For one thing, there are not that many hilly areas to manoeuvre. The air here is also cleaner than in some cities like Hong Kong. And expatriate cyclists say they can cycle here year-round compared to back in their homelands, where winter can be brutal on open transport

But safety on the roads is still a big concern.

Accidents involving cyclists have gone up over the years, from 381 in 2005 to 551 last year. There have been 283 such accidents in the first half of this year, of which 11 were fatal. Last year, there were 22 fatal accidents, up from 15 in 2006.

One such accident four years ago spurred the start of the Safe Cycling Task Force (SCTF), a 15-member volunteer group that promotes and protects the safety of cyclists.

While they welcome the authorities' moves so far to promote cycling, they believe that more can be done to educate road users and pedestrians.

'All of us, at some point, would have encountered a near-miss on the road,' said SCTF president Steven Lim, 41.

Adding to their frustration are motorists and bus drivers who are unaware that cyclists are allowed in bus lanes.

The task force has proposed that LTA sections off a small part of the left-most lane for cyclists.

It also acknowledges that it is not just motorists who need to be educated.

'There are many cyclists who misbehave because they do not know what is safe cycling. They need to be taught,' said Mr Cor-Henk Roolvink, 44, vice-president of SCTF.

The group also hopes to see more cyclists with helmets. Mr Lim said that it can be difficult to convince older cyclists and foreign workers to wear helmets.

'Some think that it's a hassle, while others think it looks uncool,' he said.

However, he draws the line at imposing a law to make helmets compulsory on riders, as he feels it will be too draconian.

His group is now putting together a list of practical tips that they hope can be incorporated into the Highway Code.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Teo Ser Luck, an avid cyclist himself, told The Straits Times that it is possible to have bicycle lanes on roads with less traffic, but these might not be feasible on main trunk roads.

'Singapore is one of the most densely populated city states and with our road scarcity, squeezing in bicycle lanes might be stretching it,' he said.

While a major change to the road infrastructure looks to be unlikely for now, the SCTF is hoping for a change in attitudes in both cyclists and motorists.

'When you cycle and you are polite to other road users, they will respond in kind. Motorists should know that the road is for cyclists as well, but that doesn't mean that cyclists can go all over the place,' said Mr Roolvink.

Some bike-friendly initiatives this year

# In an ongoing trial, cyclists have been able to take foldable bikes on to buses and trains during certain hours.

# Plans are to provide more bicycle parking facilities at MRT stations and bus interchanges in the heartlands. Tampines, Pasir Ris and Yishun residents will get more bicycle racks near their MRT stations next year.

# In an ongoing trial, cyclists have been sharing footpaths with pedestrians in Tampines.

# Upcoming cycling tracks are planned in Tampines, Sembawang and Woodlands.

# Road signs have gone up in several areas such as West Coast to alert motorists to the presence of cyclists in areas heavily used by two-wheelers.

What other countries are doing

NETHERLANDS

Widely known as a bicycle-friendly country, this European state has as many bicycles, 16 million, as it does residents. All roads have bicycle lanes and public buildings come with plenty of bicycle parking space. Parking areas at train stations can store up to thousands of bicycles.

FRANCE

A public bike rental system, Velib, was set up in Paris in July last year. Cyclists can pick from over 20,000 bicycles at 1,400 stations scattered throughout the city, and return the bicycle at another station. Velib has become so popular that cyclists sometimes have to visit two to three stations before finding a free bike.

CANADA

Bixi, a high-tech bike rental system, was recently launched in Montreal. The bikes come with radio frequency tags so their locations can be tracked and pay stations at bicycle racks are solar-powered.

UNITED STATES

With a mayor who is an avid cyclist himself, the mid-western city of Chicago is working towards becoming America's most bike-friendly city. A multi-million dollar plan to realise this goal has already created over 160km of bicycle lanes and 10,000 bicycle racks.

Cut your costs by cutting wastage: Vivian Balakrishnan

As Singaporeans look for ways to tighten their belts during the economic downturn, adopting green habits — such as reducing wastage and reusing or recycling things at home — is a good place to start, said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

By switching off appliances when they are not being used, people can save the environment while also reducing their utility bills — especially since electricity tariffs were increased by 21 per cent recently — he said during a community event held yesterday in conjunction with the recently-launched Clean & Green Singapore.

“Going green not only saves money, it can be fun too. Instead of spending all our time watching TV or playing computer games, why not engage our family and friends in more personal and interactive ways?” noted the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, citing playing sports and games as examples.

To help keep residents’ conservancy costs down, Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council has also replaced light bulbs in all the HDB estates with energy-efficient ones.

Meanwhile, the 200 households in the South West and North West districts pilot-testing ETrack — a device that measures in kilowatts and dollars and cents how much individual appliances are consuming — will know the results by the first half of next year.TEO XUANWEI

South West residents reduce carbon footprint by using energy trackers

SINGAPORE: Ever heard of an energy-saving workout? Well, the MPs and some 400 residents of the South West District did just that during their Clean and Green Carnival.

They got on bikes to generate electricity needed for the carnival and spread the energy efficiency message at the same time.

Since 2006, the district has started several green initiatives.

Its "Change A Bulb" programme saw the installation of 5,850 energy-efficient bulbs, resulting in savings of S$125,204 last year.

Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District, said: "What we hope to do in the long term is to get all households in the South West district - 220,000 odd households - to change to efficient light bulbs. Assuming that each household changes to energy-efficient bulbs for at least two of the bulbs, that will translate to S$4.8m of savings in electricity consumption."

The district's "Cash for Trash" programme saw two million kilogrammes of household waste recycled in the past year and a half.

This year, a pilot project to use Etrack, a device to track electricity consumption, will be pushed out in 100 households to encourage residents to mind their energy use.

Singapore developers may not green and bear it

Economic slowdown seen putting brakes on energy efficiency drive here

GREEN development in the building space is likely to take a backseat among some organisations given the economic slowdown because the benefits are not tangible in the short-term, a building consultant said.

This is despite it being the 'most ideal time' to invest in green technology because of the cost efficiency that could come as a result, said Peter Rawlings, a consultant at British consultancy Environmental Resources Management.

'When finances are tight, it's a very valuable exercise,' Mr Rawlings told BT after his visit to Singapore for a Keppel Land seminar on green buildings.

'What we've observed is that those companies and organisations which have a committed green building programme would continue to build green at the moment,' he added.

'However, organisations which haven't yet embraced green designs or are considering it might hold off because they've not seen the benefits directly yet or they are a bit cautious on their level of investment.'

The Green Mark Scheme by Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has gained traction among local developers recently. Major Singapore property players have applied for Green Mark certification for regional projects in Thailand, Vietnam, China and Malaysia, BCA told BT earlier.

But Mr Rawlings said that many property players are looking to rate their buildings according to the US rating system known as LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design).

This is especially for developers that are keen to expand overseas and since there is no international standard available, as countries have different factors to consider such as climate.

'In a more international context, the real dominant rating system is the LEED,' said Mr Rawlings. 'What we've been finding is that a lot of clients wish to pursue one type of rating system and apply it to all of their buildings and facilities, irrespective of geography.'

He added that the LEED is 'a very black-and-white system' which warrants either a pass or fail credit to developers, while the criteria for Green Mark are less defined, though it does not mean that Green Mark is lax.

Octopuses share 'living ancestor'

Many of the world's deep-sea octopuses evolved from a common ancestor that still exists in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, a study has shown.

Researchers suggest that the creatures evolved after being driven to other ocean basins 30 million years ago by nutrient-rich and salty currents.

The findings form part of a decade-long global research programme to learn more about life in the world's oceans.

The first Census of Marine Life (CoML) is set to be completed in late 2010.

The project, which began back in 2000, involves more than 2,000 scientists from 82 nations.

The research into the evolution of deep-sea octopuses was part of a programme called the Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML), explained Don O'Dor, CoML's co-senior scientist.

"Many of these octopuses were collected from the deep sea by a number of the CoML's different projects," he told BBC News.

"All of that material was brought together and made available to Dr Jan Strugnell, a biologist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge, and she used this material to carry out DNA studies.

"She was looking at the relationship between these different deep-sea octopuses and how they originated.

"She has been able to trace the timeline for their distribution back 30 million years to a common ancestor."

The species could all be traced back to a shallow-water octopus called Megaleledone setebos , which is only found in the Southern Ocean.

Dr O'Dor added that the BAS researcher's work also enabled her to identify how changes in the region's ocean played a pivotal role in the development of the new species, especially the emergence of a "themohaline expressway".

"When you get an increase in sea ice, fresh water forms ice crystals and leaves behind high-salinity, high-oxygen water, which is denser than the surrounding sea water, so it sinks," he explained.

"It gets mixed by sea currents and flows into all of the deepest parts of the ocean.

"At the time this process started, there was no oxygen at the bottom of the ocean, so it brought oxygen into these areas, and we can now see that the octopuses moved out from the Antarctic into deeper water."

Dr Stagnell's work also showed how the creatures adapted to the new deep-sea environment.

One example was the loss of their ink sacs, because there was no need for the defence mechanism in the pitch black waters.

As well as being one of the CoML's highlights, the research is also being published in the journal Cladistics on Tuesday.

'Unprecedented project'

The deep-sea octopus study, along with dozens of other projects, form part of the census's fourth progress report, which will be presented at the World Conference on Marine Biology, which begins in Valencia, Spain, on Tuesday.

The overarching objectives of the global collaboration between CoML's scientists include:

* Advancing technology for discoveries
* Organising knowledge about marine life, and making it accessible
* Measuring effects of human activities on ocean life
* Providing the foundation for scientifically based policies

Dr O'Dor said that the main focus of the CoML for the remaining two years was to "synthesise" the data.

"Many of our projects have already completed their fieldwork and we have a lot of information," he observed.

"What we are now trying to do is to bring all that information together in a form that allows the public to understand how much we have learned about the ocean and what lives in it."

As far as improving our understanding of life beneath the waves, Dr O'Dor said: "It has been successful beyond what I imagined when I first became involved.

"It will provide a baseline. We are not going to know everything about what is happening within the oceans, but we have samplings of most marine habitats.

"We are moving into this period of global warming, which is resulting in the acidification of the oceans, melting of the polar ice cap.

"We can use the first census as a benchmark to see what happens in the oceans over the next decade or more."

Meeting formally for the first time at the five-day gathering in Valencia will be the CoML's Science Council, which will take an overview of the 10-year Census.

"Over the past few years, there has been huge public interest in biodiversity because there is a legitimate concern about the changes being caused by humans," commented Patricia Miloslavich, the Census's co-senior scientist.

"The Science Council will (consider) what people have said about areas that have not been explored or taxonomic groups that have been overlooked in the past," she told BBC News.

"We have had this first census that has given outstanding and amazing results for many ecosystems and regions.

"But now that we have been able to identify where there are some gaps, we would like to explore these areas."

Dr Miloslavich added that the Science Council will also develop the objectives of the second census, which will run from 2010 until 2020.

Octopuses had Antarctic ancestor: marine census

OSLO (Reuters) - Many octopuses evolved from a common ancestor that lived off Antarctica more than 30 million years ago, according to a "Census of Marine Life" that is seeking to map the oceans from microbes to whales.

Researchers in 82 nations, whose 10-year study aims to help protect life in the seas, found a mysterious meeting place for white sharks in the eastern Pacific Ocean and algae thriving at -25 degrees Celsius (-13 Fahrenheit) in the Arctic.

"We are approaching a picture of the oceans ... from micrcobes to whales," said Ron O'Dor, co-senior scientist of the census of the 2007-08 findings by up to 2,000 scientists.

The $650 million census is on track for completion in 2010, assessing about 230,000 known marine species, a statement said. It has identified 5,300 likely new species, of everything from fish or corals. So far, 110 have been confirmed as new.

Among the findings, genetic evidence showed that the tentacles of the octopus family pointed to an Antarctic ancestor for many deep sea species. A modern octopus called adelieledone in Antarctica seemed the closest relative of the original.

Octopuses apparently spread around the world after Antarctica became covered with a continent-wide ice sheet more than 30 million years ago, a shift that helped create oxygen-rich ocean currents flowing north, a report said.

"Isolated in new habitat conditions, many different species evolved; some octopuses, for example, losing their defensive ink sacs -- pointless at perpetually dark depths," the census said.

SHARK CAFE

Other findings showed that white sharks traveled thousands of kilometers to spend six months at what researchers called the "White Shark Cafe" in the Pacific between Hawaii and California.

"During this time, both males and females make frequent, repetitive dives to depths of 300 meters" it said. Researchers said the purpose was unknown but may be linked to food or reproduction.

Mapping the oceans is helping researchers to work out how to protect marine life from threats including over-fishing, pollution and climate change. The census could identify areas needing conservation, or help define rules for seabed mining.

At one extreme, scientists found algae thriving in Arctic waters of -25 Celsius, kept from freezing because salt concentrations were six times more than in normal sea water.

And in the mid-Atlantic, researchers found anemones, worms and shrimp around the world's deepest known active hot volcanic vent, over 4,100 meters deep.

Among other findings were a predatory comb jelly anchored to the seabed in waters 7,217 meters (23,680 ft) deep near Japan. "It was found at a depth thought incapable of supporting predators like this one," a statement said.

The discovery of a wealth of new species was not a sign that the oceans were healthier than thought.

"The things that we're discovering ... are not the kind of things you want to see on your plate very often," O'Dor said, adding that people had fished the big, attractive species.

Even so, 95 percent of the ocean was unexplored. The census "will synthesize what humankind knows about the oceans, what we don't know, and what we many never know," Ian Poiner, chair of the census's steering committee, said in a statement.

Incredible Deep-Sea Discoveries Announced

An astounding batch of new deep-sea discoveries, from strange shark behavior to gigantic bacteria, was announced today by an international group of 2,000 scientists from 82 nations.

The Census of Marine Life is a 10-year project to determine what's down there. Among the new findings:

A large proportion of deep sea octopus species worldwide evolved from common ancestor species that still exist in the Southern Ocean. Octopuses started migrating to new ocean basins more than 30 million years ago when, as Antarctica cooled and a large icesheet grew, nature created a "thermohaline expressway," a northbound flow of tasty frigid water with high salt and oxygen content. Isolated in new habitat conditions, many different species evolved; some octopuses, for example, losing their defensive ink sacs - pointless at perpetually dark depths.

The finding will be reported Nov. 11 in the journal Cladistics.

Scientists also discovered what they're calling a White Shark Cafe: Satellite tags revealed a previously unknown behavior of white sharks traveling long distances each winter to concentrate in the Pacific for up to six months. During these months, both males and females make frequent, repetitive dives to depths of 300 yards, which researchers theorize may be significant in either feeding or reproduction.

In the eastern South Pacific, researchers found a diverse set of giant, filamentous, multi-cellular marine bacteria. They may be "living fossils" that developed in the earliest ocean when oxygen was either absent or much diminished, living on the toxic gas hydrogen sulfide, the scientists said.

Another survey found frequent examples of gigantism common in Antarctic waters. The researchers collected huge scaly worms, giant crustaceans, starfish and sea spiders as big as dinner plates.

Among the other discoveries that will be revealed at a meeting this week in Spain:

* The first record of abundant and diverse comb jellies under Arctic pack ice .
* Surprising richness of species in many deep-sea locations, including the Celebes Sea in the southern Philippines and several deep canyons.
* At least 85 new species of zooplankton, small drifting and swimming marine animals.

Scientists estimate there are at least 1 million species of marine organisms on Earth. But as of now, only about 230,000 are known.

This is the fourth report from the Census of Marine Life since the project began in 2000. A final report will be issued in 2010.

"The release of the first Census in 2010 will be a milestone in science," said Ian Poiner, chair of the Census's International Scientific Steering Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. "After 10 years of new global research and information assembly by thousands of experts the world over, it will synthesize what humankind knows about the oceans, what we don't know, and what we may never know - a scientific achievement of historic proportions."

Stars in the sea: Ocean census finds new wonders

WASHINGTON – A city of brittle stars off the coast of New Zealand, an Antarctic expressway where octopuses ride along in a flow of extra salty water and a carpet of tiny crustaceans on the Gulf of Mexico sea floor are among the wonders discovered by researchers compiling a massive census of marine life.

"We are still making discoveries," but researchers also are busy assembling data already collected into the big picture of life in the oceans, senior scientist Ron O'Dor said.

The fourth update of the census was released Sunday ahead of a meeting of hundreds of researchers that begins Tuesday in Valencia, Spain. More than 2,000 scientists from 82 nations are taking part in the project, which is to be completed in 2010.

A discovery that delights O'Dor is that many deep-ocean octopuses share an Antarctic origin. As the Antarctic got colder, ice increased and octopuses were forced into deeper water, he said in a telephone interview.

Salt and oxygen are concentrated in the deeper waters, he said. This dense water then flows out, carrying along the octopuses that have adapted to the new conditions, enabling them to spread to deep waters around the world.

Deep-water octopuses worldwide, he pointed out, lack the ink sack that allows their shallow-water cousins to shoot out a camouflage screen.

After all, if they live where it is dark, ink is unnecessary, said O'Dor, a Canadian member of the research team.

Patricia Miloslavich, a senior scientist from Venezuela, is pleased with newly discovered mollusks, from snails to cuttlefish to squids.

Once the census is complete, the plan is to publish three books: a popular survey of sea life, a second book with chapters for each working group and a third focusing on biodiversity.

O'Dor said also researchers are working with the online scientific journal PLoS ONE, which is open to anyone and thus would make the results readily available.

Scientists at this week's sessions will hear about the discovery of what the researchers call a brittle star city off the coast of New Zealand.

The brittle stars, animals with five arms, have colonized the peak of a seamount — an underwater mountain — where the current flows past at about 2.5 miles per hour. The current delivers such an ample food supply that thousands of stars can capture food simply by raising their arms.

Researchers found a carpet of small crustaceans inhabiting the head of the Mississippi Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico. There are as many as 12,000 of these small crustaceans per square yard.

Among the other findings being reported at the meeting:

_The mid-Atlantic ridge half way between America and Europe is home to hundreds of species rare or unknown elsewhere.

_The ridge includes the world's deepest known active hot vent, more than 13,300 feet (4,100 meters) deep and populated by anemones, worms and shrimp.

_Reefs deep in the Black Sea are made of bacterial mats using methane as an energy source. The bacteria form chimneys up to 13 feet (4 meters) high.

_The deepest comb jellyfish ever found was discovered at a depth of 23,455 feet (7,217 meters) in the Ryukyu Trench near Japan. The discovery raises questions about the availability of food resources at such depths, which had not been thought capable of supporting predators like this one.

_The White Shark Cafe. Satellite tagging discovers that white sharks travel long distances each winter to concentrate in the Pacific for up to six months. While there, both males and females make frequent, repetitive dives to depths of 975 feet (300 meters), which researchers theorize may be significant in either feeding or reproduction.

Astonishing Life In Ocean's Depths: Major Progress Made Towards Historic Census Of Marine Life

The 2,000-strong community of Census of Marine Life scientists from 82 nations has announced astonishing examples of recent new finds from the world’s ocean depths. Mollusk expert Patricia Miloslavich (Venezuela), Census co-senior scientist: “We are beginning to pull together a picture and clarify the complicated and interconnected global drivers of marine biodiversity patterns and changes, and we are starting to see the conservation-related implications and benefits, from the small coves of the near-shore to the vast abyss.”

Antarctic ancestry of many deep-sea octopuses worldwide

Within their mandate "to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the oceans – past, present, and future,” Census of Antarctic Marine Life scientists report the first molecular evidence that a large proportion of deep sea octopus species worldwide evolved from common ancestor species that still exist in the Southern Ocean.

Octopuses started migrating to new ocean basins more than 30 million years ago when, as Antarctica cooled and a large icesheet grew, nature created a “thermohaline expressway,” a northbound flow of tasty frigid water with high salt and oxygen content.

Isolated in new habitat conditions, many different species evolved; some octopuses, for example, losing their defensive ink sacs – pointless at perpetually dark depths.

This revelation into the global distribution and diversity of deep sea fauna, to be reported Nov. 11 in the journal Cladistics, was made possible by intensive sampling during Census International Polar Year expeditions.

Other findings are listed below.

Distribution of sea life

Scientists discover both a “White Shark Café” and a “sturgeon playground” in the Pacific, as others explore life on a “new continent” in the mid-Atlantic, in oceanic canyons, around Earth’s deepest hot vents, and in the world’s coldest, saltiest seawater;

Deep sea diversity

Deep sea explorers discover new forms of life, including behemoth bacteria, colossal sea stars, astonishing Antarctic amphipods and a mammoth mollusk, and find familiar species in many new places. Experts also estimate that, beyond the 16,000 marine fish species already known to science, another 4,000 await discovery, many of them in the tropics.

Abundance

Researchers find a sea floor carpet of bugs and a city of brittle stars, and document bluefin tuna abundance in the early 1900s by scouring fishery reports, fishing magazines and other records.

Meanwhile, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System has grown to include more than 120,000 species. And a rapidly-expanding reference library of DNA barcodes of marine species recently helped reveal inaccurate labeling of sushi in New York City and elsewhere.

As well, the national and regional networks expediting much of the Census work expanded from 10 to 12 since 2006. They and the field projects of the Census established precedent-setting ethical standards for marine research.

As more than 700 delegates gather for the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (Valencia, Spain Nov. 11-15), organized by the Census’s European affiliate program on Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning, the report details major progress towards the first ever marine life census, for release in October, 2010.

Other research highlights

1) Exploring a “new continent” in mid-Atlantic: MAR-ECO (http://www.coml.org/descrip/mareco.htm) scientists describe their work as “surveying a new continent half way between America and Europe.” Sampling along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at depths down to 2,500 meters, they find many hundreds of species rare or unknown elsewhere in the world and collect environmental data to help explain their distribution and abundance.

2) World’s deepest known active hot vent: ChEss (http://www.coml.org/descrip/chess.htm) scientists in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge explore the world’s deepest known active hot vent, field named Ashadze, over 4,100 meters deep, dominated by anemones, polychaete worms and shrimp. They also discover marine environments with little or no oxygen harboring more life than expected.

3) Bacterial mats in Black Sea: ChEss scientists also find reefs deep in the Black Sea made of bacterial mats using methane (natural gas) as an energy source, the bacteria forming spectacular chimneys up to four meters high. Such reefs could contribute key insights into mechanisms controlling emissions of methane, an important greenhouse gas, from the ocean to the atmosphere.

4) Brittle Star City: Exploring off the coast of New Zealand, CenSeam (http://www.coml.org/descrip/censeam.htm) researchers capture images of a novel “Brittle Star City,” whose inhabitants colonize the peak of a seamount – an underwater summit taller than the world’s tallest building. In a swirling circumpolar current flowing at roughly four kilometers per hour, tens of millions of brittle stars live arm tip to arm tip. The current kept away would-be predators while delivering an ample supply of food that residents of Brittle Star City collected simply by raising their arms.

5) Surprisingly different twins: NaGISA (http://www.coml.org/descrip/nagisa.htm) nearshore scientists in the Alaskan Arctic find a site with a rocky seafloor, rare along the normally soft and silty Arctic coastline. The hard substrate hosts a highly diverse community compared to surrounding soft bottom habitat. Comparison of this new site to a similar site surveyed by Census researchers in 2002 shows surprisingly different communities. Census nearshore scientists collaborating with local agencies also discover new species in the Aleutian archipelago, including a kelp, sea anemones, chitons, snails, and sea stars.

6) Pacific hotspots: TOPP (http://www.coml.org/descrip/topp.htm) researchers discover eddies of warm water in the Pacific may meld, forming hotspots in the open sea that support elevated levels of tiny phytoplankton that form the base of the marine food web. These green meadows in the vast Pacific in turn concentrate species from all tiers of the food web – from shrimp to large predators like tuna, seabirds, and whales.

7) Seep mega-sites: COMARGE (http://www.coml.org/descrip/c-margins.htm) and ChEss scientists discover more lively communities flourishing off cold gases such as methane seeping out of the sea floor. Around New Zealand, they map the “Builder’s Pencil” site covering about 180,000 square meters, among Earth’s largest known seep sites. Sensitive to human activities despite their depth, the communities keep revealing unique features. Finding both potential new species and scars from deep-water trawls by fishing vessels on the scientific surveys suggests the urgency for further conservation of these fragile habitats.

8) Philippine firsts: In the first deep-sea work in the area, COMARGE researchers sample to a depth of 2,300 meters, collecting about 300 fish and 400 mollusc species for barcoding. Some 320 decapod crustaceans are photographed, displaying their beauty and aiding future identification of many unique and subtly distinct specimens.

In 2008, COMARGE investigators return to explore the Philippine margin of the South China Sea, between 100 and 2,200 meters depth. Discoveries include the first Philippine record of the deep-water stony coral Lophelia pertusa, the first living specimen of Acharax bartschi (a large bivalve living in symbiosis with bacteria), rare deep-water snails living on a dog’s skull that had washed out to sea, and a likely new species of shrimp belonging to a group only known from hydrothermal vents. The trawl also collected many plastic shopping bags.

9) Potential new marine protected area, Africa: While largely unexplored, the rich Western Indian Ocean, including the Mozambique channel, suffers destructive fishing practices, such as use of dynamite. Census-affiliated explorers with the Sub-Sahara African Committee chart a proposed marine protected area off Tanga, Tanzania. Using SCUBA and remotely operated vehicles, Tanzanian scientists and students join international researchers to survey life along transects that could be periodically revisited, collecting samples for identification and barcoding.

10) Life in coldest, saltiest seawater: ArcOD (http://www.coml.org/descrip/aobio.htm) researchers studying life in the Arctic find temperatures of –25°C in sea ice channels where brine is more than six times saltier than regular sea water. Representing the coldest conditions in the global ocean, researchers find sea ice algae, such as diatoms, and flagellates thriving in concentrations of thousands of individuals per liter.

11) 100 new species and records near Hawaii: CReefs (http://www.coml.org/descrip/c-reefs.htm) experts census biodiversity in the French Frigate Shoals, the world’s largest, fully protected marine area in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Using a variety of new and proven methods over a diverse range of habitats, the team logs more than 100 species and new records.

12) Carpet of bugs: COMARGE researchers describe a new species of amphipod, Ampelisca mississippiana, inhabiting the head of the Mississippi Canyon about 460 meters deep in the Gulf of Mexico. These small crustaceans (less than 6 millimeters in length) and living in tubes, carpet the seabed in densities up to 12,000 individuals per square meter. Based on its abundance and the stabilizing effects this “carpet of bugs” has on sediments, researchers believe this amphipod may have great ecological importance.

13) Deepest comb jelly: CMarZ (http://www.coml.org/descrip/cmarz.htm) explorers find a potential new species of comb jelly, or ctenophore, at the record depth of 7,217meters in the Ryukyu Trench near Japan – the deepest ever recorded siting of this unique species, that flies like a kite on the end of two long “strings” attached to the bottom. The discovery raises questions about the availability of food resources at such depths, which had not been thought capable of supporting predators like this one.

14) Evolutionary mollusk: In the Southern Ocean, CAML (http://www.coml.org/descrip/caml.htm) researchers find many potential new species including sea cucumbers, sponges and komokiaceans – little known protozoa living in the depths of the ocean resemble the organisms that form chalk. They also collect a rare mollusk, named Laevipilina antarctica, believed to play a role in how segmentation evolved in marine invertebrates.

15) Arctic jellies galore: In the Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean, ArcOD researchers find several new species and more than 50 taxonomic categories of gelatinous zooplankton. Almost two-thirds are medusae, one-fifth siphonophores, and one-tenth larvaceans. The first new species formally described from the expedition was named Sigambra healyae, in honor of the research vessel, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy.

16) 85 new zooplankton species: CMarZ scientists discover at least 85 new species of zooplankton, small drifting and swimming marine animals. Four genera and one family were officially deemed new to science, with many more expected to follow. In the Atlantic Ocean from Germany to South Africa, scientists collect zooplankton in a range from the surface to below 5,000 meters. Taxonomic experts and geneticists identify and barcode the DNA from hundreds of species. As expected, several new species of small crustaceans called ostracods or seed shrimp and other groups are found.

17) Antarctica’s big amphipod: CAML scientists exploring a 10,000 kilometer portion of the Antarctic Weddell Sea made suddenly accessible by the collapse of the Larsen A and B ice shelves sample an estimated 1,000 species. Of these, four presumed new species of cnidarians (organisms related to coral, jelly fish and sea anemones) are found, as well as 15 potentially new amphipod (shrimp-like) species, including one of Antarctica’s biggest-ever amphipod crustaceans, nearly 10 centimeters long.

18) Spectacular species in Celebes Sea: Zooplankton researchers with CMarZ travel to a biodiversity hot spot in the Celebes Sea in the southern Philippines, uncovering unexpected richness and diversity of marine life from the surface to the almost totally unexplored deep waters. Divers collect a remarkable variety of fragile and beautiful gelatinous species, while video cameras and collect images and organisms from depths beyond the divers' reach.

19) Surprising species richness: Recent advances in technology are opening up remote frontiers Рdeep-sea canyons. COMARGE researchers aboard the RRS James Cook off Portugal find that species richness was almost double in the more active Nazar̩ Canyon than in Lisbon Canyon. This is despite Lisbon Canyon receiving a substantial supply of river-borne organic matter that would foster large populations of filter-feeding organisms.

20) 11,130 known species in South African waters: Experts with the Census’ Sub-Sahara African Committee estimate 6,000 more species, primarily smaller marine animals, are yet to be discovered in South African waters, which are already known to feature some 11,130 species. A new shrimp (Hippolyte) and the first record of the enigmatic group Myzostomida from the region are discovered in False Bay, the most sampled site on the African coast.

21) 870+ squat lobster species: COMARGE scientists list 870 known species of squat lobsters and create an electronic library of relevant literature. Squat lobsters are colorful decapod crustaceans found in all oceans, at all depths, and in all marine habitats, but are especially abundant on continental margins.

22) Antarctic expressway: In the Southern Ocean, Census CAML explorers find evidence that deep sea octopuses ride the “Antarctic thermohaline expressway.” The northbound expressway is a mass of sea water with a high salt density caused by the ice that forms at the surface around the Antarctic, the water cascading like cream.

They find as well that sea birds feed on Antarctic zooplankton when the tiny organisms aggregate at a thermal front.

23) Animals in new places: ArcOD explorers make the first record of many marine animals in many areas of the Canada Basin. These include abundant and diverse ctenophore (comb jellies) under Arctic pack ice and a dense bed of sea cucumbers in what might be a pockmark. They also record more squid than ever before in the Arctic deep sea, and document the importance of sea ice ridges for marine life in the region.

24) White Shark Café: Satellite tagging by TOPP reveals a previously unknown behavior of white sharks (http://www.eol.org/taxa/17143484), travelling long distances each winter to concentrate in the Pacific for up to six months. During these months, both males and females make frequent, repetitive dives to depths of 300 meters, which researchers theorize may be significant in either feeding or reproduction.

25) Migration pathway: MAR-ECO researchers suggest the Mid-Atlantic Ridge may serve as an important pathway in colonization of North Atlantic continental slopes. Before their expeditions, scientists thought skates and rays, for example, migrated through the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, rather than taking up residence there.

26) New species in familiar waters: Systematically exploring two islands on the Great Barrier Reef and a reef off northwestern Australia, CReefs researchers find hundreds of new kinds of animals in waters were long familiar to divers. They also conduct the first scientific inventory of spectacular soft corals, named octocorals for the eight tentacles that fringe each polyp.

27) Australian expedition: One species in three new to science: The first results from the COMARGE “Voyages of Discovery” expeditions to the deep continental shelf and slope in Australia’s southwest region show 524 species of Decapoda—crabs, shrimps, prawns, lobsters, and the like. Some 33 percent of all species encountered are suspected to be new species, and 25 percent are new records in the region, eight percent are new records for Australia.

28) Sponge garden: COMARGE and ChEss researchers examining cold seeps in the Mediterranean Sea using remotely operated vehicles find surprisingly abundant marine life, including a garden of sponges around a brine lake. The sponge itself, likely Rhizaxinella pyrifera, harbours a multitude of small worms.

29) Behemoth bacteria: A diverse set of giant, filamentous, multi-cellular marine bacteria is discovered by ICOMM (http://www.coml.org/descrip/icomm.htm) researchers in the eastern South Pacific. These bacteria may be “living fossils” that developed in the earliest ocean when oxygen was either absent or much diminished, living on the toxic gas hydrogen sulfide. Scientists hypothesize that communities of bacteria may hold potential for bioremediation of organically polluted bottoms and, because of their ability to survive in anoxic conditions, may be an important clue in the search for extraterrestrial life.

30) Colossal sea stars: CAML expeditions to the Southern Ocean find frequent examples of gigantism common in Antarctic waters. The researchers collect huge scaly worms, giant crustaceans, starfish and sea spiders as big as dinner plates.

31) Largest mollusk in class: A giant aplacophoran mollusk, Chaetoderma felderi, is collected in deep waters off Louisiana by GoMex, a Census-affiliated project working in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring over 407 mm in length and 10 mm in diameter, about the size of a AAA battery, it is more than twice the length and three times the diameter of the next largest known mollusk in the subclass.

32) Gigantic oysters: With the assistance of a remotely operated vehicle, COMARGE explorers find dense communities of giant oysters 20 cm (eight inches) long at a depth of 700 m on the La Chapelle continental slope. Genetic studies will confirm if this is a new species.

33) Barcoding zooplankton: An international CMarZ team from 25 cooperating projects is analyzing data from roughly 6,000 historical samples to help create a catalog of described species diversity and distribution. DNA barcodes will identify approximately 7,000 known species of zooplankton in 15 phyla. This growing database will help scientists identify specimens, describe their geographic distributions, and recognize when a species is in fact new. Scientists envision a day soon when quick, automated sample barcoding analysis will be a reality.

34) Following fishers to find vents: Stymied in their search for active methane seeps in the Chilean margin, COMARGE scientists take a novel approach: follow the fishers. They launch their search in known fishing grounds of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides), suspecting that these fish congregate near methane seeps. Their hunch proves correct: Most fishing grounds were associated with hard grounds, with some made of carbonates associated with methane seepages.

35) Coral reef colonization: To learn what new creatures colonize coral reefs, CReefs scientists develop and test Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS), to be colonized by fish and other creatures that inhabit coral reefs. The structures mimic the “nooks and crannies” of a natural reef. With this information, marine scientists can better understand the health of reefs and policy makers can develop scientifically-based management strategies.

36) Mapping microbes: To identify marine microbes and survey their distribution around the globe, ICoMM launches 40 separate projects using the same DNA sequencing technology, “454 tag-pyrosequencing.” The efficient identification by a standardized method allows scientists to inventory areas as diverse as polar biodiversity hotspots, coastal microbial mats, and sediments in tropical coral reefs. They can then create unprecedented global maps of the tiniest life in the ocean.

37) Arctic robots: Two new underwater robots give ChEss scientists a bird’s eye view of what lives on Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic Ocean. These exploration vehicles carry cameras and sophisticated arrays of instruments used by scientists to discover a new underwater volcanic chain covered by extensive microbial mats. Because the deep Arctic ridges are isolated from other ocean basins, the investigation of Gakkel Ridge provides clues about the evolution of fauna around underwater vents in isolated habitats.

38) Nearshore research expands worldwide: NaGISA expands nearshore research within the Caribbean, South America, and around the Indian Ocean through regional workshops aimed at standardizing protocols. Scientists use these protocols in monitoring and educational program to assess environmental impacts and to engage local communities in the process.

39) A highly detailed look at biodiversity in a well-documented bay: A unique collaboration of U.S. and Canadian GoMA (http://www.coml.org/descrip/gom.htm) researchers enhances knowledge of changing marine eco-systems by studying the nearshore zone of Cobscook Bay, Maine, from both historical and present-day perspectives. One of the most diverse coastal ecosystem on the North American east coast north of the tropics, this estuary features many different habitats, a tidal range of over eight  meters, two centuries of historical records dating back to 1842, and more than 800 species identified to date.

40) Engaging the public: NaGISA scientists studying the nearshore environment of the world ocean are present on six continents. Science education programs and training workshops aim to incorporate research protocols, which makes data gathered in the coastal environment comparable from place to place. The nearshore investigations engage the public in ocean and coastal issues and inspire the next generation of marine scientists.

41) International study of plankton bloom: In the Southern Ocean, collaborating CeDAMar (http://www.coml.org/descrip/cedamar.htm) researchers follow a plankton bloom from its onset until it changes to marine snow and finally sinks to the deep-sea floor. The scientists then examine the influence of the snow of fallen plankton on marine life on the floor itself. It is the first such collaboration undertaken since the Galathea expedition in the early 1950’s. In spite of bad weather and complicated logistics, the collaboration produces a trove of data.

42) Leading research for International Polar Year: Census projects play a key role in the International Polar Year 2007-2009. In the Arctic, the Census leads the marine biodiversity cluster of 13 projects from eight countries on more than 20 expeditions. They observe how mammals use diverse polar habitats, inventory life in a fjord, and explore seeps, pockmarks, and mud volcanoes on remote ocean floors. In the Southern Ocean, the Census coordinates the science on 10 major expeditions by vessels from nine different countries, the results reported live via the Internet. The Census also initiates a collaborative program focusing on Antarctic marine life in seven South American countries.

43) Race to protect sea turtles: The Great Turtle Race, an international race developed by TOPP to save a 100-million-year-old species from extinction moved to China in 2008. A Mandarin language version of an interactive webpage tracks the migration of endangered leatherback turtles, bringing the race to approximately 100 million Chinese citizens. Donations go to protection of leatherback turtle nesting areas in Indonesia, and raise awareness of the turtles plight.

44) Leatherback conservation: For more than 12,095 satellite-tracking days over three years, TOPP scientists track leatherback turtles and compile the largest, multi-year migration record ever. The data reveals that ocean currents shaped the migration corridor and turtle dispersal in the South Pacific.

45) Hydrothermal vents and seabed mining: ChEss scientists orchestrate a joint scientific and policy meeting for the spring of 2009 to discuss protection of the vent sites from the potential growth of deep sea mining. The meeting’s goal: set priorities for future research and balance the conservation of critical vent sites versus the value of ores.

46) Focusing fishery management: MAR-ECO research along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge strives to fill information gaps about the distribution and abundance of certain species of grenadier (http://www.eol.org/taxa/17063155), distant relatives of codfish in the North Atlantic. Amid the uncertainty, regional managers take precautionary measures to protect grenadier stocks and their habitats.

47) CSI in the sea: DNA barcoding shark fins: Demand for their fins and other organs impact global shark populations. The frequently inaccurate identification of sharks and rays confuses what fishermen are catching, what fins and organs markets are selling, and how populations are changing. Accordingly, researchers with the Marine Barcode of Life project (http://www.marinebarcoding.org/publications) develop DNA barcoding to identify species of sharks and their products, such as dried fins, essential to knowing how many sharks are being caught and to enforce prohibitions. 48) Managing underwater mountains: CenSeam expeditions in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica expand knowledge of life on seamounts, providing a foundation for sustainable management of these ecosystems. Census researchers deliver a report to the United Nations General Assembly on the vulnerability of seamount corals to fishing and help develop guidelines for deep-sea fisheries.

49) Learning from the past: Rise and fall of tuna: Scouring fishery reports, fishing magazines, and other records, HMAP (http://www.coml.org/descrip/hmap.htm) researchers document the presence of bluefin tuna (http://www.eol.org/taxa/17050078) in northern European waters several decades before the onset of major fisheries in the early 1900s. After fishing increased and techniques became more powerful, the fishery collapsed in the mid-1960s. Documentation of the historical abundance of this especially popular seafood species, and its subsequent collapse, will be used to inform future decisions.

50) Assessing human impact: HMAP brings together a worldwide network of experts from multiple disciplines to figure out why populations of mollusc have declined. They report their work in a book, Early Human Impact on Megamolluscs (Oxford: Archaeopress).

51) High mortality for young salmon: Using acoustic tagging, POST (http://www.coml.org/descrip/post.htm) researchers track the progress of young Chinook salmon (http://www.eol.org/taxa/17154704) as they move from freshwater rivers in the Canadian and US northwest out to the ocean and eventually to the Alaska coast. The observations suggest that in just a few weeks, 40 percent of the tracked salmon perished in the ocean.

56) Counting all creatures in the Gulf: Scientists complete a comprehensive inventory of all marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. 57) Listing all species, eliminating aliases: The list of known marine species surpasses 120,000, placing the Census halfway toward its goal of cataloging the estimated 230,000 known species by 2010. The Census-affiliated World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) identifies more than 56,000 aliases for ocean species, with one species, the “breadcrumb sponge,” alone having 56 scientific names.

58) 4,000 Marine Fish May Await Discovery: Employing a novel approach to count quantify global fish species, FMAP researchers estimate that almost 16,000 species of marine fish are recorded in publicly accessible databases. They suggest another 4,000 fish species await discovery and description, many of them in the tropics.

South Asia is 'worst for snake bites'

South Asia has the highest number of casualties from snake bites in the world, a new study suggests.

It found that more than 400,000 people a year are poisoned by snake bites worldwide, with 20,000 deaths annually.

The research published by the US based Public Library of Science Medicine involved data from 68 countries.

India, with its population of over a billion people, accounted for the highest estimated number of bites and deaths for a single country.

'Tropical phenomenon'

Researchers led by Janaka De Silva at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka say that conservative estimates suggest 421,000 cases of "envenoming" - or venom released through biting - occur each year, with 20,000 people dying as a result of being poisoned by snake bites.

India had the highest number of people poisoned - just over 80,000, resulting in 11,000 deaths - followed by Sri Lanka with 33,000 people poisoned. Most victims are male.

Researchers say the numbers could be higher because many snakebites are not reported - especially in rural areas where many victims do not have access to good health care and rely on traditional remedies.

"The fact that snakebite varies geographically and seasonally, that it is mainly a rural tropical phenomenon where reporting and record keeping is poor and that health-seeking behaviour is diverse with traditional treatments being sometimes preferred to Western medicine, all contribute to the difficulties faced when studying its epidemiology," the report says.

"The true magnitude of the public health threat posed by snakebites in these countries (and elsewhere in the world) is unknown, which makes it hard for public health officials to optimise the prevention and treatment of snakebites in their respective countries."

Of the 3,000 or so snake species that exist in the world, the report says, about 600 are venomous. They exist on every continent except Antarctica.

8 Ways to Go Green and Save Hundreds

Everywhere you turn these days, you hear about eco-friendly ways to live. One thing you don't usually hear is how the "three Rs" not only save the planet but help save you money. Check out how much money you can save by implementing these eight actions.

1. Buy in Bulk

The Scenario:
* In almost every situation, the more of a product you buy, the less cost you'll endure per unit because the manufacturer or retailer will give you a bulk price rate.
* Individual packaging (most likely a form of plastic) is either difficult to recycle or not recyclable.
* Buying in bulk means less trips to the store or online orders, saving gas money and carbon emissions.

The $ignificance:

A Real Simple Magazine experiment in 2003 found that purchasing 15 common items at a warehouse store in bulk as opposed to the supermarket saved $58.74 in Illinois and $109.72 in New York (including a membership fee), and the major reason for the price discrepancy were the supermarket prices per state. It's safe to assume that doing a majority of your shopping in bulk would save over $200 on supplies and $20 per year on gas, regardless of where you live.

The Solution:
For goods that have a long shelf-life (i.e. anything that doesn't need refrigeration), opt for a larger quantity and recycle as much of the packaging as possible.

2. Reduce Food-Related Paper Use

The Scenario:
* Oil-based food stains are the easiest way to make your paper not recyclable; it's why you can't find recycling locations for paper towels or paper napkins.
* The average American family uses 1.5 rolls of paper towels each week.
* Brown paper bags have just as high of an environmental footprint as plastic bags when manufacturing and disposal are considered.

The $ignificance:
You'll be lucky to find paper towels for less than $.75 per roll. That means you're paying at least $4.50 a month for disposable towels, so cutting your use to one roll a month would save $45 per year.

Paper bags are only about $.02 per bag, but if you make two lunches every day, that's $14.60 per year thrown into the trash after one use.

FYI: Several states and stores are already talking about a $.05 charge for each disposable bag required to carry your purchases. We won't crunch the numbers, since it probably doesn't apply to you yet, but there's another financial argument for reusable packaging.

The Solution:
Use reusable cloth towels for cleaning the house and your spills, and throw them in the laundry instead of the garbage (the cost to wash towels will be negligible if it's done with the rest of your laundry). Check into lunchboxes or plastic containers to carry your lunch, which will be a one-time investment instead of constantly funding your disposable habit.

3. Use Rechargeable Batteries

The Scenario:
* Rechargeable batteries can be recharged hundreds of times without losing the ability to hold a charge, while single-use batteries are "one and done."
* It's easier to find recycling locations for rechargeable batteries instead of single-use batteries.
* In energy-draining devices like digital cameras, batteries may only hold a charge for a few hours of use.

The $ignificance:
The average family buys 32 batteries a year, and you may be able to find them for $.50 apiece. You could probably get by on four rechargeables for the same purposes at $2.50 per battery, and the charger should be about $10. Add on an extra $5 for energy costs to charge your batteries (assuming you unplug the charger when not in use).

This means switching to rechargeables will actually cost you an extra $9 the first year, but you're looking at potential savings of $11 per year for who knows how many years afterward, depending on your battery use.

The Solution:
Even though you might spend a little more at the start, rechargeables are still the way to go when it comes to saving money and reducing waste in the long run. Shop around for deals on rechargeable batteries so you don't get stuck buying cheaper alkalines at the last minute. Consider an ENERGY STAR-qualified battery charger so you'll use less energy charging batteries.

4. Install a Programmable Thermostat

The Scenario:
* Programmable thermostats don't require mercury to get a reading, while many analog thermostats do.
* These thermostats have settings to control your temperature based on time of day and seasons, lowering your energy bill.

The $ignificance:
ENERGY STAR estimates a yearly savings of $180 by installing a programmable thermostat. The unit will probably cost about $60 and you could spend $50 getting it installed, but that means a savings of $70 the first year and $180 each year after that.

The Solution:
Here's two things to consider once you've made the change:

1. Properly dispose of your old thermostat if it contains mercury (see the eighth tip below about hazardous products to learn how).

2. Check to see if your purchase will count as an energy-efficient home improvement for tax purposes to help justify the initial expense.

5. Print Only When Necessary

The Scenario:
* It takes a gallon of oil to produce one ink cartridge, and we dispose of 13 every second.
* The typical person uses 1.5 pounds of paper every day, meaning you can go through a ream in just a few weeks.
* Through email and backing up files, you can access documents at the drop of a hat without a hard copy.

The $ignificance:
Ink cartridge costs will depend on your printer, but let's say it's $60 for both your black and color ink. If you cut ink purchases from once every three months to once a year, that's $180 in your pocket.

If you print three pages a day, that's almost three $8 reams of paper used in a year. Print three pages a month and that same ream will last 11 years. That's $16 in just the first year.
The Solution:

Ask yourself before printing an email, work document or miscellaneous page, whether it can remain on your screen. If you do print, choose only the pages with text you need and print on both sides of the paper. When you're out of ink look into cartridge refilling programs, and consider recycled paper for your next printing purchase.

6. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Lighting

The Scenario:
* Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) may cost more than incandescent bulbs, but they save as much as 80 percent of the energy used by incandescents and last up to 10 times longer.
* While incandescents are recyclable, finding a recycler is difficult because there isn't much value in the parts; several states and retailers offer CFL recycling specifically because they contain mercury.
* Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are even more energy-efficient than CFLs and don't contain mercury, although they cost much more.

The $ignificance:
Let's say you want to change 10 light bulbs in your house. Incandescents will run you about $.25 per bulb, while CFLs will be closer to $2.50 per bulb. However, your $22.50 in savings on bulbs will seem trivial when you consider those 10 CFLs could save $65.70 a year and $360 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

The Solution:
CFLs can be plugged into pretty much any light socket in your house (if you are looking for dimmable lights, be sure to make sure you purchase the proper type of CFL). When they eventually do run out, make sure you recycle them to keep the mercury content out of landfills.

7. Utilize Public Transportation

The Scenario:

Cars have one of the largest carbon footprints of all transportation, and lower gas mileage in city traffic will only make this number higher.

Public transportation often relies on renewable energy, meaning costs aren't as reliant on the price of gas.

Parking is more limited and expensive in the downtown area of any major American city.

The $ignificance:
In the most expensive cities in the U.S., you can get a one-way bus, train or ferry trip for under $5 (and under $2 once you're in town). You're probably driving 40 miles round-trip to visit the nearest major city, the equivalent of at least two gallons of $3 (at least) gasoline. Factor in $10 to park your car, any tolls to enter the city, mileage costs and wear and tear on your car, and you're looking at $25 per visit.

This means you can save about $10 per visit to a major metropolitan city by using public transportation. If you make one trip per month, that's $120 a year. Imagine the savings if you do one trip per week!

The Solution:
Public transportation is pretty helpful and thrifty if your city has access to it. Check out these options before you rent a car, plan a night on the town or decide where to move.

8. Attend a Household Hazardous Waste Event

The Scenario:
* You have hazardous products (such as household cleaners, paint and pesticides) that you no longer need but shouldn't be thrown away.
* Communities hold household hazardous waste (HHW) events and programs to properly dispose of these items.
* These same programs may also have a "swap shop," allowing you to take home products you may need for free or a nominal fee.

The $ignificance:

A bucket of paint will run you $25, but probably last the entire year. You could easily spend $20 per year, at least, on various cleaning supplies. Assume a nominal fee of $5 to acquire these "like-new" products, and you've just saved $40 a year and reused gallons of hazardous products that won't be recycled otherwise.

The Solution:
You can find an HHW location or event in your area using Earth911. Consider the swap shop before your next run for household items.

The Grand Total

So in just one year, you could save a minimum of $762.30 with these eco-friendly options. This doesn't even factor in the long-term savings from several of them. Go green and save it!
