'Last wave' for wild golden frog

A BBC film crew has captured footage of a rare frog waving, wrestling and courting for the first time.

The Panamanian golden frog communicates with other frogs by semaphore in the form of gentle hand waves.

It has evolved the mechanism to signal to rivals and mates above the noise of mountain streams.

Shortly after filming for the BBC One series Life In Cold Blood, the frogs had to be rescued from the wild, due to the threat of chytrid fungus.

Hilary Jeffkins, senior producer of Life In Cold Blood, said the semaphoring behaviour of the Panamanian golden frog was very unusual.

"Normally, frogs would croak to get their message across but it's too noisy," she said. "An extra mechanism they've evolved is to wave to each other."

'Final wave'

The frogs (Atelopus zeteki) were filmed at a remote location in the Panamanian rainforest. The population had all but disappeared because of a fungus that grows on the amphibians' skin and suffocates them.

The film crew was disinfected - to stop them from carrying the disease - and managed to capture unique footage of the frogs in the wild.

Just after filming was completed in June 2006, the location was overtaken by the chytrid fungus.

Scientists were forced to remove the remaining frogs from the wild and keep them in captivity.

Hilary Jeffkins added: "The whole species is now extinct in Panama - this was one of the last remaining populations. It's its final wave in our programme."

Chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) is a major contributor to the decline of amphibian populations around the world, threatening many species with extinction.

Malaria jab hope over chimp virus

Scientists believe a chimp virus may hold the clue in the long-running battle to develop a malaria vaccine.

Experts have been trying for the last 20 years to find a jab for the disease, which kills more than 1m people a year.

An Oxford University team are using the chimp virus to provoke an immune response in cells where the parasites responsible for malaria gather.

Trials are just getting under way and, if they prove successful, a vaccine may be available within five years.

The team is using a genetically-modified chimp adenovirus combined with a malaria gene in a bid to kill the parasites once they enter the body.



Previous research had shown that adenoviruses, which cause common problems such as colds and gastroenteritis, are particularly effective at triggering such an immune response.

But as many people will have been exposed to the human adenovirus the team, funded by the Wellcome Trust, turned to the chimp version.

Lead researcher Dr Sarah Gilbert said: "Chimpanzees have their own set of adenoviruses which rarely infect humans, so we have not built up immunity to them.

"This is why we have chosen such a virus to form the backbone of the new vaccine."

Oxford University is just one of several groups reaching the trial stage with potential vaccines.

The disease has proved a particularly tricky challenge as it is so complex.

Malaria pathogens have thousands of genes compared to the scores in many of the diseases which vaccines have already been developed for.

Deaths

And the lack of progress has left doctors relying on drug treatments and bed nets to keep away mosquitoes which carry the malaria parasite.

It means promises made in 2000 to halve the burden of the disease within 10 years are almost certainly going to be missed.

However, experts believe significant steps are now being made.

Colin Sutherland, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said the Oxford University research showed "promise".

He added: "I think we are getting closer with a vaccine and there is more confidence now than there has been for 10 years.

"The problem is that it is so complex and if we do get there it will be one of the biggest vaccine achievements."

Survey: World's rarest ape numbers doubled

The population of the world's rarest ape has doubled after a new survey. There are now thought to be 110 Cao Vit gibbons in forests on the China-Vietnam border.
Until the latest survey by Fauna and Flora International (FFI) there were thought to be only 50 surviving gibbons.

The Cao Vit is listed as a critically endangered species and the new study will help with its future conservation.

Survey teams of biologists, government rangers and local villagers led by FFI surveyed forest on both sides of the China-Vietnam border in September last year for Cao Vit gibbon groups, counting them either by sight or by recording their evocative songs.

Preliminary estimates suggest that as many as 20 family groups survive and the team were able to take pictures and make videos of the gibbon in the wild for the first time.

Gibbons were also reported in parts of the forest they had not previously been recorded in. People from Lung Hoai Village in Vietnam told project staff that they are now hearing gibbon songs near their village where they didn't before.

FFI, which works to save threatened species and ecosystems, has been working to save the Cao Vit gibbon - a sub-species of the eastern black crested gibbon, scientific name Nomascus nasutus nasutus - since staff members found a small remnant sub-population in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam in 2002.

FFI began conservation efforts despite the scarcity of data on the species. Four years later, three more family groups were discovered across the border in Guangxi Autonomous Region, China, where they were believed to be extinct.

FFI Vietnam project coordinator Paul Insua-Cao said: "When we realised the gibbon was rare enough to demand urgent action, we immediately began protection measures, even though we lacked the results from an exhaustive census. We didn't want the Cao Vit gibbon to go the way of the Yangtze river dolphin, which was declared extinct last year."

Gibbons are apes, like chimps, gorillas and orangutans, and are closely related to humans. They are native to the forests of Southeast Asia live in close-knit family groups comprising a male, 1 - 2 females and 2 - 5 offspring.

They make distinct and complex bird-like calls, called a 'song', which they can project up to two kilometres through the forest canopy. Adult family members sing both duets and solos (with the male and female singing different parts) in the early morning to defend their territory.

The loss of suitable habitat is one of the main threats to the gibbons due mainly to villagers felling trees for firewood and charcoal making and clearing forest for grazing.

FFI has established community groups to patrol and protect the gibbon's forest habitat and is working with local people to prevent habitat loss. Simple and cost-effective measures such as providing villagers with simple fuel-efficient stoves are helping to relieve pressure on the gibbon's habitat.

Where Elephants Tread, Geckos Thrive, Study Finds

As elephants bash and browse through the trees of the African savanna, they create nooks and crannies for little geckos to hide from predators and the hot sun, according to a new study.

The research shows that the population of Kenya dwarf geckos increases proportionally with the number of trees with limbs snapped, trunks split, bark stripped, and branches fallen in the wake of an elephant run-in.

African bush elephants, which weigh more than 15,000 pounds (7,000 kilograms), are known to modify habitats dramatically, noted Robert Pringle, an ecologist and conservation biologist at Stanford University in California.

Usually, he added, the modification is considered a destructive force.

"But here I seem to have evidence that they can also be a constructive force, with positive effects on the abundance of other species and perhaps on biodiversity more generally," Pringle wrote in an email from Kenya.

The damage caused by elephants creates crevices in broken trees, as well as a cover of strewn branches, providing geckos with secure spaces to rest or lay eggs, he explained.

Pringle conducts his research at the Mpala Research Center in central Kenya. He explains the positive effect of the elephant browsing on gecko population in the January issue of the journal Ecology.

Ecosystem Engineering

The finding is a "very nice demonstration" of ecosystem engineering, said Clive Jones, an ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York.

Ecosystem engineering is the process by which the activities of one kind of animal can structurally modify habitats of another, potentially benefitting other species. Jones and his colleagues first introduced the concept in 1994.

Jones said that many examples of ecosystem engineering have been based on inferences.

For example, if a beaver pond is full of salamanders not found anywhere else, the inference is that the beavers' modification of the habitat benefits the salamanders.

"Pringle's study," Jones said, "very clearly establishes the connection between the engineering activities of the elephants and the effects on lizards as being largely due to habitat creation."

Conservation Implications

The connection between geckos and elephants also has implications for the conservation and management of elephants, Pringle said.

"At the most basic level, these findings really underscore the importance of conserving elephants in particular," he said.

"They provide this crucial form of disturbance, and if you lose them, then you might well lose populations of other species in a cascade of extinction."

But determining how many elephants must be conserved is a complex calculation, Pringle noted.

His earlier work has shown that a heavy concentration of large browsers like elephants, gazelles, and giraffes tends to negatively effect the abundance of trees, beetles, and geckos.

When all large herbivores are excluded from a patch of land, geckos thrive, perhaps because the vegetation grows so thick and dense that it is full of hiding spots—similar to elephant-damaged trees.

A worrisome aspect of conservation management, Pringle noted, is that elephants are often excluded from small reserves like Kenya's Nairobi and Nakuru National Parks.

The new study underscores the need for some elephants, he said. The goal is to find the right balance—enough elephants to provide the benefits but not too many to outcompete other critters.

"There is probably a middle range of elephant density that is optimal from the perspective of overall biodiversity," Pringle said.

Warming Creating Extinction Risks for Hibernators

When researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab in Crested Butte, Colorado, started documenting marmot hibernation patterns in the 1970s, the animals rarely awoke before the third week of May.

But these days, the scientists say, marmots regularly end their winter naps a month beforehand—by the third week of April.

These abbreviated hibernations are part of a growing body of evidence suggesting that hibernating animals are waking up earlier—or not going to sleep at all—due to rising temperatures from global warming.

From chipmunks and squirrels in the Rocky Mountains to brown bears in Spain, these altered slumber patterns are putting animals at risk both of starvation and increased predation, researchers say—which could bring many species to the brink of extinction.

"With respect to the marmots, at least, the evidence is convincing that it is connected to warming temperatures," said David Inouye, a biology professor at the University of Maryland who collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab researchers.

Average low temperatures in April in Gothic, Colorado, the site of the marmot study, have climbed 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit (1.4 degrees Celsius) since 1976, the first year researchers began recording marmot hibernation stats.

Sending the Wrong Signals

Scientists say it's logical to believe that rising springtime temperatures explain why animals are awakening at times that they would normally be snoozing.

Hibernating animals survive on fat reserves during the winter months when food is scarce. During hibernation, their metabolisms slow and their body temperatures drop to levels close to ambient air temperature.

As long is the air is cold, the animals' bodies are too, consuming very little of the fat they accumulated in summer and fall.

But as air temperature increases, so does body temperature and metabolism. The animals begin to use their stored fat more quickly, sending the signal that it's time to wake up and look for something to eat.

Biofuels: the future?

Biofuels are being championed as the eco-friendly alternative to oil, gas and coal, which could revive Britain's farming industry. But how green are they? And is it right to grow crops for fuel instead of food? Fred Pearce investigates

Keep going past the abbey at Walsingham in north Norfolk, turn right down a narrow lane just before Wells-next-the-Sea, and there is a field of Britain's tallest and strangest farm crop, a subtropical supergrass rather like bamboo. It is called Miscanthus, or elephant grass - probably because you could hide a small elephant in the stuff. If it catches on, elephant grass will change the landscape of Britain, obscuring hedgerows and field patterns far and wide under a thick beard.

Local farmer Tom Green took me inside his 11-hectare thicket. The dense grass was hard to penetrate and impossible to see out of, or over. After just six months' growth, it was twice our height, and as the wind blew the grass like an ocean swell, I began to feel disorientated. I wasn't the first. When beaters from the local shoot went in to flush out birds, they got seasick. 'Several were ill before they got out,' Green said.

Why grow this sinister, alien grass? Green said he is cultivating the fuel of the future - biofuel. He showed me the first harvest baled up on the edge of the field, ready for trucking to the world's largest straw-burning power station down the road at Ely.

Biofuels are crops intended to replace oil, gas and coal in the world's power stations, industrial boilers and fuel tanks. There are three sorts. Some, like Green's elephant grass, are burnt in conventional industrial or power-station boilers. Others like corn and sugar are distilled into liquid ethanol to replace petrol in transportation. Still others - mostly vegetable oils such as soya, rape and palm oil - are refined to make a substitute for diesel.

For now, cars cannot run on either neat bioethanol or biodiesel. But much of the fuel for sale at filling stations across Britain is already blended with small amounts of biofuel. From April, most petrol and diesel will contain 2.5 per cent biofuel, rising to 10 per cent by 2020.

We have always had biofuels - wood, hay and charcoal among them. In 1892 Rudolf Diesel ran the demonstration model of his engine on peanut oil; and the Model T Ford first hit the road burning ethanol rather than petrol. For most of the past century, cheap crude oil has eclipsed the biological alternatives. But for more than two years now, biofuels have been among the fastest growing sectors in the global energy economy.

The new enthusiasm has two origins. The first is the growing uncertainty about supplies of oil. Whether or not analysts are right in saying that oil is starting to run out, it is certain that the majority of what remains is in the hands of potentially unstable regimes, and that prices are rising steeply. That is why George W Bush fired the starting gun on the new biofuels boom in the US in 2005 when he declared that American corn could replace oil imports from the Middle East.

Second is the growing fear of climate change - burning oil, coal and natural gas greatly adds to the emissions of carbon dioxide. Like these fossil fuels, biofuels are made of carbon, the basic building block of all life forms, so burning biofuels also creates carbon dioxide. But what makes them different is that they emit the same amount of carbon when burnt as their origination crop absorbed from the air while growing. Taken overall, biofuels should be carbon neutral, though things aren't quite so simple (see The carbon conundrum, below).

British farmers, like many around the world, hope that they are on the verge of a biofuels bonanza. And it is a bonanza that could involve a bewildering variety of crops. Farmers such as Green are growing elephant grass or willow coppice to burn in power stations and boilers. Britain's largest power station at Drax in North Yorkshire last year mixed its regular supplies of coal with 300,000 tons of elephant grass in an effort to reduce its carbon emissions.

Other farmers are growing sugar beet and grain crops such as wheat to make into bioethanol. Green is involved in this, too. His sugar beet used to be turned into packets of Silver Spoon at British Sugar's giant factory at nearby Wissington in the Fens. But this year's crop will go to a new distillation unit that British Sugar has just completed there. Petrol blended with bioethanol at the plant has been on sale in British filling stations ever since it opened last November and the plant is expected to produce 70 million litres of bioethanol this year.

So far the biggest biofuel crop in British fields is rape for turning into biodiesel. If you buy diesel, you may be consuming a small part of the harvest from Paul Temple's rape field. Temple farms 340 hectares outside the small market town of Driffield in the Yorkshire Wolds. Like many farmers, he has for some years included rape as part of his crop rotation, for use in cooking oil and margarine. 'Two years ago, my rapeseed was a Cinderella crop, with no profit,' he said. 'But now, thanks to biofuels, prices are higher and I am investing equipment, time and energy into increasing yields.

'Biofuels could transform the UK farming industry,' he said as we drove though Driffield. 'This town has lost its purpose in recent years. The jobs in agriculture have disappeared. There used to be four grain merchants here, now there are none. But biofuels could be the way back.'

Temple is the vice president of the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and constantly commuting to Brussels to help determine European Union farming policy. 'Much of Britain's farmland is going to waste at present, when it could be growing fuel,' he said. Rather than lying fallow or being given over to conservation, he wants to see fields growing biofuels.

Indeed, it was partly due to advice Temple gave in Brussels that the EU last year suspended its set-aside programme, which paid farmers not to grow crops on a portion of their arable land. The NFU says this gives farmers greater 'flexibility' in managing their land, and with grain prices rising most, farmers can make more money growing crops for biofuel than taking set-aside cash.

Temple's 2008 rape crop will go to a crushing mill in Hull owned by Cargill, the international grains trader. From there the crushed seeds will cross the Humber estuary to a new biodiesel plant in the industrial port of Immingham run by a company called Greenergy. This automated plant - all steam and pumps and aluminium vessels - is the baby of the environmental entrepreneur Andrew Owens (you could call him the Anita Roddick of biofuels), and supplies half the bio­diesel sold in Britain today. He plans to buy a quarter of a million tons of rape from British farmers in 2008 - 10 per cent of the entire crop.

Owens met me on site. 'We refine to food standard,' he said proudly as we donned hard hats and climbed to the top of the plant to look across the industrial landscape below. 'What comes out of here is virtually extra-virgin oil. The bits in the bottom that make it good food don't make such good fuel, so we take those out. It goes back to the farmers as animal feed.' The rest heads down a pipeline for blending with conventional fuel, before heading for the filling station forecourts.

Owens, who started his business making greener fuels 15 years ago, has seen 40 per cent annual growth in the past three years. Big buyers of his biodiesel include bus companies and supermarket fleets. He currently has construction workers on site, doubling the plant's size in time for the introduction in April of the Government's new rules on blending biodiesel with regular diesel. To fund this, Owens has sold two 25 per cent stakes in his company, one to Tesco, his biggest customer, and one to Cargill, his biggest supplier. Neither company is normally in the good books of environmentalists, but they can smell the profit in biofuels.

Temple and thousands of other British rape farmers should be delighted by news of this expansion, but many are growing worried. The clue is Greenergy's location on the waterfront of the country's largest port. Yes, the biofuels refinery can take crushed Yorkshire rapeseed from Cargill, but it can equally well run on other vegetable oils imported from Asia or Latin America.

Biofuels may sound like the quintessential local crop, but in practice the feedstock is traded on the high seas almost as much as oil. About half of the raw material arriving at Greenergy's jetty already comes from abroad. Owens mixes home-grown rape with soya from Brazil and palm oil from Southeast Asia. British farmers are becoming bit-part players in a global market that is growing in volume but getting more and more competitive on price, and that looks like bad news for people like Temple and Green. Just as they get their new biofuel crops into the ground, foreign farmers could undercut them. By the time this year's harvest is grown, the buyers may have gone elsewhere.

Sugar beet farmers are already complaining that the offer price from British Sugar's new bioethanol plant, at just over £20 a ton, has come down by almost a third, and is less than the cost of growing and transporting the crop. The farmers fear they are about to be gazumped by Polish beet growers.

Last year, Britain's fields turned bright yellow as they were planted with rape on an unprecedented scale. But, for all Temple's enthusiasm for his crop, wheat may prove more profitable this year since prices have doubled in the past 12 months as global stocks diminish with droughts in Australia and elsewhere. Meanwhile, Drax power station recently replaced some of its elephant grass with a shipment of olive pips from Italy. 'If we are not careful, we won't have a home-grown biofuels industry at all; the feedstock will all be imported,' says David Croxton, a Somerset farmer and the managing director of Biomass Industrial Crops (Bical), a co-operative of farmers that is the country's biggest trader in elephant grass.

Will Thurmond, an American consultant on biofuels, says British farmers are right to fear the worst. Biofuels manufacturers in Europe and the US are scouring the world for cheaper feedstock. I met Thurmond at Europe's largest biofuels exhibition, at Newark, Nottinghamshire, in mid-October. Thousands of biofuels farmers and businessmen had assembled there in the belief that they were part of a new wave of green technologies that is both helping fight climate change and making megabucks. Virtue meets reward.

But the golden future was slipping through their fingers. It wasn't just that farm prices were going in the wrong direction. Even their sense of going green was being shaken by a sudden surge of criticism from environmentalists who they had expected would be their friends. Twenty minutes into the event, the showground was invaded by placard-waving protesters who shouted, 'Feed people not fuel'. There were only a few dozen of them, but they were vocal, determined and well-organised.

One protester, sporting a tweed jacket, leather briefcase and delegate's badge, managed to padlock himself to the podium at the conference auditorium. 'I want to stop BP from using "greenwash" to keep on with their position of power,' he told me. He meant that big oil companies such as BP were taking over biofuels to make profit rather than helping the planet. For him, this was betrayal. The protesters were soon ejected, but afterwards, some of the more thoughtful delegates admitted that there were genuine issues to be discussed. 'We'd like the greens here next year,' they said.

The most toxic charge against biofuels is that they will starve people by taking scarce land and water supplies that should be used to grow food. The veteran American environmentalist Lester Brown describes the increase in the use of bio­fuels as a 'smash and grab raid by the 800 million people who own automobiles, on the fields that grow food for the planet's three billion poor'. He blames the biofuels boom for the recent surge in world food prices and warns that the only way of growing both food and biofuels is to chop down the remaining rainforests.

In truth, greens have got themselves in a huge tangle over biofuels. Some are in favour of biofuels because they will help fight climate change; others are vehemently against them because they could cause hunger and trash the environment. Surf the net and you find that Friends of the Earth 'warmly welcomes' the Government's new rules requiring biofuels at the forecourt. But another environment group called Biofuelwatch, which helped instigate the Newark protests, says those same rules 'will cause starvation'.

This confusion is reflected in government circles, too. Until recently there has been cross-party agreement that biofuels are a solution to both oil shortages and climate change. But in recent weeks, the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has been sounding more cautious. At the Oxford Farming Conference in January, his new chief scientist Bob Watson warned that 'the way we are currently producing biofuels is not the way to go', because it was driving up food prices and accelerating forest loss. Even the European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas admitted last month that 'environment problems caused by biofuels are bigger than we thought', and suggested that his targets for vehicle fuels might have to be put on hold.

Such concerns are already making some potential backers of biofuels think again. Last August, the coach company National Express pulled out of a biofuels trial after discussions with environment groups. 'What appears to be the green option may not actually be green after all,' said the chief executive Richard Bowker.

All this sounds a gloomy prognosis, but there may be hope. Watson held out the prospect that within five years scientists will have perfected ways of making bioethanol for car engines from non-food crops such as elephant grass. Then the world could grow biofuels on wasteland.

Meanwhile, perhaps the future lies closer to home. Before the big corporations and President Bush got involved, the biofuels business had been growing through small projects run by green-minded communities and enthusiasts. Five years ago Britain's biggest biofuels project was turning used chip-fat into biodiesel. At the Newark exhibition, that spirit was still on display. There were dozens of stands shwing off schemes for making biofuels from everything, including urban refuse and pond algae. Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board.

Back in Norfolk, they think so. Green's nearest neighbour, Stephen Temple, runs a dairy herd that supplies milk for the family cheesemaking business. It produces 18 tons of cheese per year, including the Alpine cheese - named after the brown Swiss in his herd. The heat for the dairy, cheesery and farmhouse alike comes from boilers that he has installed to burn local wood pellets.

Burning wood in a county full of farm copses is the simplest method of heating available, he said. No trashed rainforests, no heavy fertiliser applications, no blighted landscapes - and significantly cheaper than relying on British Gas. 'Every new housing development round here should have a heating system that burns wood,' he says.

But while Temple dreamt of a future based on the oldest biofuel of all, his neighbour Green had a problem. I asked Green why the bales of elephant grass from last year's harvest were still sitting at the roadside. It turned out that Ely power station, which had originally ordered them, had changed its mind. Green wasn't sure why. He reckoned he might be able to sell the elephant grass at a knock-down price to Drax, but was starting to think that he would be better off with a local solution.

The high school in Wells, two miles up the road, was putting in a new boiler that would be able to burn his elephant grass. It could take 50 tons per year, nearly half his crop. 'I think I will hang on to these bales, in case the school needs them,' he said.

The carbon conundrum

In theory burning biofuels is carbon-neutral because they emit the same amount of carbon they absorbed while growing. In practice, things aren’t so simple. The problem is that it takes a lot of energy to grow, transport and process biofuels – energy that probably comes from burning coal or oil. Manufacturing fertiliser, for instance, requires a lot of energy and if the biofuel is made into a liquid to put in petrol tanks, that process is energy-intensive, too. A critical question to ask, to establish the green credentials of all biofuels, is how much energy does it take to grow and process them?

Tom Green's elephant grass comes up trumps. He says leaves falling from the crop in winter provide all the fertiliser it needs and the grass requires very little processing before being shoved into a power station boiler. If the boiler is close by, the carbon footprint of elephant grass is virtually nil. By contrast, growing corn and turning it into bioethanol – President Bush’s favoured method – requires so much energy that the overall carbon emissions are almost as great as burning Brent crude.

The vegetable oil crops turned into biodiesel at Immingham come somewhere in the middle of this range. The energy requirement for processing palm, soya or rape oil is more modest than for bioethanol. And while rape requires fertiliser, soya and palm oil require very little. Greenergy’s Andrew Owens said this means that processing palm oil and soya, even after they have been shipped from Southeast Asia and Brazil, is still the greenest way of making biodiesel.

So should we all switch to diesel cars burning biodiesel? Not so fast. The issue is that most of the world’s palm oil is grown on former rainforest land in Malaysia and Indonesia, and huge areas of forest continue to be burnt to make way for new plantations. With the prospect of booming demand for palm oil to make biodiesel, the Indonesian government alone is planning to establish another three million hectares of plantations in its rainforest provinces.

Much the same is happening with soya in Brazil. Even worse, many of the Southeast Asian forests being trashed are on peat swamps, which are made up of the waterlogged remains of old forests and contain a great deal of carbon. Before oil palms are planted, the swamps have to be not only cleared, but also drained, which oxidises the peat and releases the carbon.

It makes no sense to clear rainforests and drain peat swamps to grow crops intended to reduce Europe's carbon emissions, said Jack Rieley, a wetlands expert at the University of Nottingham. 'I estimate that draining the swamp forests will release at least 30 times more carbon than will be saved by using the palm oil as fuel.'

Owens accepts that if growing biofuels in the tropics involves deforestation or loss of peat then 'the carbon emissions are likely to outweigh any benefits from the use of biofuel'. But he is angry that biofuels are being singled out when far more palm oil is used in the food industry than in biofuels. Britain currently consumes a million tons of palm oil per year and less than five per cent of that is for biofuel.

Owens claims that it is biofuels people who are trying to drive up environmental standards in Southeast Asia - but there is a long way to go. An industry initiative, backed by Owens, to certify 'sustainable' palm oil that isn't grown by destroying forests or draining bogs is making slow progress. It hasn’t yet certified a single plantation.

It rains less on weekends due to traffic pollution

Weekdays bring heavier downpours than weekends, suggests new research.

Summertime storms in the southeastern United States shed more rainfall midweek than on weekends, the study found. The cause could be the air pollution created by the daily grind—traffic and business operations.

The study was carried out by atmospheric scientist Thomas Bell of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and his colleagues. They looked at data collected by NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite from 1998 to 2005. This method has advantages over rain data collected with ground-based gauges that can vary from one gauge site to the next.

They found it rains on average more between Tuesday and Thursday than from Saturday through Monday. The clearest day of the week was Saturday, with nearly twice the rainfall on the wettest day, Tuesday afternoon.

They compared the rainfall trend with corresponding air-pollution records from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They specifically analyzed particulate matter, or the airborne particles associated with pollution, finding that between 1998 and 2005 air pollution tended to peak midweek as well.

"If two things happen at the same time, it doesn't mean one caused the other," Bell said. "But it's well known that particulate matter has the potential to affect how clouds behave, and this kind of evidence makes the argument stronger for a link between pollution and heavier rainfall."

Called "seeding," particles help clouds to grow. As water and ice cling to the particles, additional water droplets form. Some researchers think increased pollution thwarts rainfall by dispersing the same amount of water over more seeds, preventing them from growing large enough to fall as rain.

Still, other studies suggest some factors can override this scattering effect. In the Southeast, summertime conditions for storms are already in place, overriding the buffering effect from scattering.

The results, published in the Jan. 31 issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres, bring new insights into pollution's effect on weather, which one day could help improve the accuracy of rainfall forecasts, Bell said.

Workweek fumes may make some weekends drier

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Air pollution may have a silver lining in some parts of the United States -- it might help make summer weekends less rainy, according to a new study.

Scientists have long questioned whether particulate pollution from vehicles and factories, which is higher during the workweek, changes weather patterns.

The study, published on Thursday in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres, found that tiny particulate matter from workweek pollution may "seed" summer clouds in the U.S. Southeast, where plentiful hot, moist air tends to form more rain.

"There is a kind of a feedback loop," where pollution causes heavier storms during the workweek that flush smog from the atmosphere and tend to leave summer weekend weather clearer and less rainy, said Thomas Bell, an atmospheric scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the report's lead author.

"Pollution dies on the weekends, so you have the tendency for less severe storms and nicer, clearer air," he said.

On average, it rains more in the Southeast between Tuesday and Thursday than from Saturday through Monday, the NASA-funded study found.

Its satellite data found that afternoon rainfall peaks on Tuesday, with 1.8 times more rainfall than on Saturday, which experiences the least amount of afternoon rain.

The pollution-rain connection was less pronounced in western half of the country, where it tends to be drier in the summer.

In cloud seeding, water and ice in clouds grab hold around particles, forming additional water droplets that lead to heavier rainstorms.

Bell said the study suggests that weather forecasters may be able to sharpen their rain predictions by focusing more on pollution levels.

One more case of chikungunya fever hits another foreign national

SINGAPORE: One more case of chikungunya fever was reported on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in Singapore to 12.

10 patients had been admitted to hospital for isolation and all but one have since been discharged.

The latest case involves a foreign national with no recent travel history. He lives on Norris Street, which is about 200 metres away from Clive Street where the first few cases were detected.

Since 14 January, both the Ministry of Health and the Environmental Health Institute have screened 2,268 people.

The National Environment Agency is continuing its inspections in areas beyond the Clive Street area.

More than 4,400 inspections have been conducted and 73 breeding sites have been detected and destroyed. - CNA/vm

One more struck by Chikungunya virus

ONE more person has been infected with the Chikungunya virus, which appears to be still active in the Little India neighbourhood.

This brings the total number of people stricken to 12, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) yesterday.

The latest victim is a foreigner who lived in Norris Street - 200m away from the centre of the outbreak in Clive Street. He had not travelled overseas recently and spent most of his time in the Little India neighbourhood, where all the other cases have occurred.

The news comes even after intensive search-and-destroy operations were conducted in the Clive Street area to remove mosquito breeding habitats.

To curb the outbreak, more than 4,400 inspections have been carried out by 20 NEA officers and 15 pest control operators - almost three times more than usual.

So far, a total of 73 breedings have been detected and destroyed.

The NEA is continuing its operations in areas beyond the Clive Street area, which are bound by Rochor Road, Race Course Road, Lavender Street and Jalan Besar.

Chikungunya fever is an acute viral disease, similar to dengue fever. Like the dengue virus, it is spread by the Aedes mosquito and causes symptoms such as fever, joint pains, chills and nausea which usually last three to 10 days.

All detected cases were assessed at the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and 10 people were admitted. All but the latest case have since been discharged.

A total of 2,268 people have already been screened by the MOH and NEA since the first case was detected on Jan 14.

Those who have been in the Little India area recently and have developed a fever are advised to consult their doctors.

Those infected by the virus should be isolated from further mosquito bites by staying indoors and sleeping under a mosquito net during the first few days of the illness. This is to reduce the risk of further transmission of the virus.

Launch Of Guidebook To Curb Illegal Trading Of Turtles

SINGAPORE, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- Trading of tortoises and freshwater turtles in Southeast Asian countries will come under closer scrutiny by enforcement agencies when they are armed with a new guidebook soon.

The guidebook is called, "An Identification Guide to the Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore and Timor Leste".

Written by Dr Mark Auliya of the Kuala Lumpur-based wildlife trade monitoring network, Traffic Southeast Asia, it is published in Bahasa Malaysia and Indonesia, English, Chinese and Tagalog.

It lists 44 of the region's endangered species of tortoises and freshwater turtles which are banned for trading, for easy identification by enforcement officers.

Published by Traffic, with the collaboration of the Singapore Zoo, the book was launched by Wildlife Reserves Singapore group chief executive officer Fanny Lai at the zoo premises here, today.

Auliya said the book would help enforcement officers who were currently facing difficulties in identifying the banned species, put a stop to its trade.

Traffic's senior programme officer Chris Shepherd said the tortoises and freshwater turtles were in great demand for food, especially soups, apart from being used for traditional medicines, pets and to a certain extent, for religious purposes.

He said Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore were among the many places in the region where the trading and smuggling of the banned species were rampant.

Shepherd said the demand for tortoises and freshwater turtles in Southeast Asia was growing rapidly as it had a good market regionally and internationally, especially China.

"Even the captive breeding of tortoises and turtles cannot cope with its huge demand, and this has led to the harvesting of those caught in the wild in Southeast Asia," he added.

Shepherd said Traffic could not account for the value of the current trading of tortoise and freshwater turtles in the region, but the last data recorded in 2000 showed that about 10 million turtles were traded from Southeast Asia, 50 per cent of which were endangered species.

Thousands of Olive Ridleys massacred again in India

Bhubaneswar: More than 8,000 endangered Olive Ridley turtles are said to have been killed over the past three months by mechanised trawlers along the Orissa coast in eastern India, home to the world's largest nesting site for turtles.

The State has a long coastline of over 480 km in the Bay of Bengal and sea turtles come ashore in several places for nesting in every winter. Around 7,00,000 to 8,00,000 Olive Ridley turtles visit Orissa's Gahirmatha beach, located 174 km from Bhubaneswar.

"Like in the past, the clean sandy beaches of the State are once again littered with bleeding Olive Ridleys, as thousands of them have been washed ashore after being killed by mechanised fishing boats," Biswajit Mohanty, coordinator of the turtle conservation group Operation Kachhapa, told IANS.

"Over the past three months, we conducted surveys from time to time and spotted large numbers of dead Olive Ridleys in Gahirmatha in Kendrapada district and at the Devi river mouth in Puri district.

"Besides these two places, we have also spotted dead turtles at the Jatadhar river mouth in Jagatsinghpur district, in the Harishpur area, Chilika coast and in Puri," Mohanty said.

At least 8,354 Olive Ridley turtles have been found dead on the beaches and near the river mouths, the conservation group says.

Around 3,000 dead turtles were spotted in the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary alone, he said, followed by the Dhamra river mouth with 2,000 dead turtles and around 1,154 at the Chilika river mouth.

However, state wildlife chief P K Patnaik said the number of dead turtles discovered along the coast in the past three months was just around 2,000.

"We have taken all measures to protect the turtles," Patnaik told IANS. "We have established at least 45 camps along the coastline comprising local officials and local social activists to keep a watch on the movement of turtles and to provide them protection," he said.

"Besides, we have also sought the help of police to stop the movement of mechanised trawlers near the nesting sites," he added.

But Mohanty said for the last three years, the State forest department has been concealing the exact figure of the turtle casualties for fear of public outcry over their inaction.

He said in the past 14 years, more than 1,30,000 turtles have been found dead on the Orissa coast, which has earned it the dubious title of being the "world's largest turtle graveyard". Last year, around 9,000 turtles were found dead here.

"The turtle congregation is now breaking up and there is little chance of mass nesting at the Devi river mouth. Every day, hundreds of mating turtles are being slaughtered here.

"Though mechanised trawling is prohibited within a 20 km radius of the coastline, every day 20-30 trawlers could be seen here due to lack of enforcement," he alleged.

Endangered Olive Ridleys continue to be massacred in the State despite orders passed by the Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court in April 2004 to protect them.

Two new speedboats were bought by the State Fisheries Department with a grant of Rs 1.2 crore provided by the Centre. However, they are lying idle at Paradip port instead of being deployed for patrolling. It has been learnt that there are no trained boat drivers to run these boats, Mohanty said.

A hired old trawler used at Devi mouth is idle on most days. The dates of patrol are announced well in advance, hence there have been no seizures till date, he alleged.

No night patrolling is carried out though it was ordered by the committee. Also the law made it mandatory for trawlers to use Turtle Excluder Devices (TED), however, not a single trawler uses them.

On January 15, 2008 several dead Olive Ridley turtles were found at Gundalba beach with injured heads and cut flippers.

Turtle deaths are, however, absent at the Rushikulya river mouth, he said.

The Rs 1 crore given by the Indian Oil Corporation to the forest department in the year 2000 for turtle protection is yet to be used for fishing boats, Mohanty said. The money has been wasted on field camps and buying useless equipment, he said.

The department is yet to fill up the vacant posts of forest guards and foresters in the Rajnagar Wildlife Division and the Puri Wildlife Division, which are in charge of patrolling in the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary and the Devi river mouth area.

Like tigers and elephants, the Olive Ridley turtles are protected by Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Trapping, killing or selling of this species could result in a maximum of seven years' imprisonment. But not a single person has been convicted in Orissa, though thousands of turtles are killed every year.

Singapore remains a major player in Tangshan's development

TANGSHAN, China: Tangshan may have lost out to Tianjin in the race to build the Sino-Singapore eco-city, but it's charging ahead with big plans.

Tangshan was a contender in the co-development bid of the eco-city with Singapore, but the coveted project eventually landed in Tianjin.

While Tangshan city may have lost a partner, it's gained many friends.

Tangshan party secretary Zhao Yong said he's still keen for Singapore to be a major player in its development.

He said: "We have many regrets that we were not selected, but we've gained much more. We have learnt many valuable experiences from Singapore, made friends and explored many opportunities for collaboration."

In the pipeline are four new cities, including two eco-cities, a new central business district, and an air-cargo city.

Mr Zhao said Tangshan is in talks with Italy, Sweden, Japan, Britain and Korea, to build one of the eco-cities in Cao Fei Dian, the site originally proposed for Singapore.

A major earthquake in 1976 devastated Tangshan and held the city's development back for as many as ten years.

The city government wants to catch up fast and is wooing investors to take advantage of its natural deep harbour and its newly discovered oil field.

Mr Zhao said he is busy courting foreign expertise - including Singapore businesses, to share their knowledge in petrochemicals, water treatment and logistics.

He is looking to Singapore to train some 1,500 officials and businessmen.

A high-level economic forum is also planned for the later half of 2008.

An agreement was signed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Gan Kim Yong, said: "As part of the framework, we'll be encouraging our private sector to take a lead in investment drive in Tangshan and Cao Fei Dian, so from that point of view, the framework offers greater flexibility and allow us to explore different ways to cooperate at different levels."

The ceremony was witnessed by Singapore’s National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan, who had just arrived from Tianjin city. -CNA/vm

Japan kills whales as protesters pull out: report

Japanese harpoonists killed five whales in one day after protesters who had halted the hunt in Antarctic waters were forced to return to port to refuel, an Australian report said Friday.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith had raised the issue and voiced his "disappointment" during a face-to-face meeting with his counterpart in Tokyo late Thursday, his spokesman said.

The meeting came shortly after reports that the whalers were hunting again after low fuel forced Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd ships to abandon their protests.

Officers aboard the Australian customs vessel, the Oceanic Viking, witnessed the killing of the whales and took video evidence of the slaughter, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The Australian government dispatched the Oceanic Viking to gather evidence for a possible international legal challenge to end Japan's whaling programme.

Amid the diplomatic tension over whaling, Smith flew to Tokyo on Thursday for a two-day visit and later met with Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura.

"Mr. Smith expressed disappointment that whaling had resumed in the Southern Ocean, and conveyed the Australian government's strongly-held view that Japan's whaling programme should cease," the foreign ministry spokesman said.

"During the meeting the two countries have agreed to disagree on this issue."

Japan, which uses a loophole in a 1986 global whaling moratorium that allows lethal research, aims to slaughter about 1,000 whales this year despite strong opposition from Western countries and environmental groups.

"Japan's position is that this is research based on science and is a completely legal activity," Komura was quoted as telling Smith. "What's important is to handle this issue without getting emotional."

Harassment of the Japanese fleet by Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd ships had halted the killing of whales from about the middle of last month.

Sea Shepherd leader Paul Watson has said he hopes to return to the fray on the ship the Steve Irwin in about 10 days and to stop the Japanese killing whales for another three to four weeks.

In Tokyo, Japan's Fisheries Agency said it would not disclose the actions of its fleet.

"The government of Japan has decided not to disclose the location of our ship or whether we have restarted our activities for the security of our crew, especially after Sea Shepherd has said on its website it will relaunch attacks," Hideki Moronuki, the head of the whaling division, told AFP.
