Seventy percent of primates in Indonesia on brink of extinction

Malang (ANTARA News) - Some 70 pct of precious stones in Indonesia are on the brink of extinction because of the serious damage of the habitats of primates and their illegal fishing for free trade.

Director of ProFauna Indonesia Rosek Nursahid said on Monday that the population of approximately 200 kinds of primates, including 40 in Indonesia, and 70 pct of which are on the brink of extinction.

"Since 2000, the international conservation agency published 25 different primates most seriously on the brink of extinction in the world, including 25 of Indonesia namely the Sumutra orangutan (Pongo Abeli), Tarsius Siau (Tarsius Tumpara), Kukang Jawa (Nycticebus javanicus), and Simakubo (Simias cocolor)," Rosek said on the sidelines of a campaign for preserving primates held in Malang.
