Indonesia: Heavy downpours bring floods to Aceh

Floods caused by heavy downpours in West Aceh and Bener Meriah over the weekend have hit several areas in Aceh’s two regencies.

Antara news agency reported on Monday that water from overflowing rivers had inundated five out of 12 districts in West Aceh regency.

“Water entered the residential areas at about 4 a.m. this morning while we were all still asleep. We were able to salvage our belongings though,” said Khairunnas of Pasie Masjid subdistrict, Johan Pahlawan district.

Data has yet to be released on the number of evacuees but as of Monday no fatalities had been reported.

Floodwater has also inundated dozens of houses in four subdistricts in Bener Meriah regency since Sunday evening.

“About 262 people have been evacuated to the nearest school building and mosque,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
