Malaysia, Johor: 3 elephants found dead, feared poisoned

KUALA LUMPUR: Three elephants were found dead in Kampung Sri Timur 3, Kluang, Johor, on Tuesday, believed to have been poisoned.

Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said an initial post-mortem conducted on the animals to identify the cause of death indicated there maybe criminal elements involved.

“Nonetheless, the type of poison imbibed is still unknown as the samples of the liver and kidney of three elephants have to be sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis.

“The results of the toxicology analysis to identify the poison will be known in three months,” he said in a statementtoday.

On Tuesday, Kluang police chief ACP Mohd Abduh Ismail was reported as saying the elephants were found dead at 9.30 am by villagers who stumbled upon the three elephants lying motionless in the village.

Xavier said the investigation of the Wildlife and National Parks Department in the surrounding area also found the private electric fencing put up by villagers was not functioning which caused the elephants to intrude into the area.

“Based on the size of the soles of the dead elephants, they were estimated to be aged 18, 20 and 22 and it is believed the elephants were from a breakaway group of the Lenggor Forest Reserve in Johor,” he said.

Xavier said the department would be cooperating with the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) to make it compulsory to install electric fencing in oil palm plantations near the forest reserve to prevent wild elephants from damaging plantations and the village areas.

JOHOR BARU: Three female elephants were found dead at a plantation area of a village in Kluang after ingesting poison.

“The people of Kampung Sri Timur 3 noticed that the elephants were lying motionless on the ground for quite some time.

“They then reported the incident to the police as they suspected that the elephants were dead,” said Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Abduh Ismail, adding police re­ceived information about the incident at 9.30am yesterday.

He added that this was the first time such an incident occurred in the area.

Johor Perhilitan director Salman Saaban confirmed that the elephants had ingested poison and the matter was being investigated.

“We are still waiting for reports from the Forensic Department in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Photos and videos of the elephants have also been circulating on social media and many have voiced their disappointment and want the culprits caught.
