Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - The dockyard industry and housing development in Batam in 2011 have caused damage to about 60 hectares of mangrove forests, an environment official said.
"There are about 60 hectares of mangroves which were damaged in Tanjung Uncang and Tiban," said head of the Environmental Impact Analysis office of Batam, Dendy Purnomo said here on Thursday.
He said that the mangroves were damaged due to reclamation work by six companies around the mangrove forest in the Tanjung Uncang Industrial Areas.
Besides, the six firms, there were also four dockyard which further worsen the mangrove forest conditions in Batam, he said.
