Yusof Ishak Secondary students head to Sungei Buloh Park for wireless learning

SINGAPORE : The classroom has gone outdoors for a group of students from Yusof Ishak Secondary School.

Instead of having the usual type of lesson in a classroom, students are learning at Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve.

And at the Mangrove Boardwalk, students will embark on the Wireless Learning Journey - which is the first of its kind in the parks in Singapore.

Students will be using webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) to access information on the wetland reserve.

They will also be prompted with questions on what they see along the trail.

At Route 1, students will be using data-loggers to investigate the conditions of the water and air at two locations.

On the idea of using IT in a nature reserve park, one student said: "It's kind of weird (but) interesting and fun because it's very convenient to get information. It's a different kind of experience."

As the world changes and technology moves forward, so does the way students learn.

Increasingly, lessons are conducted outside the traditional classroom, and this makes learning a fun experience for many.
