'Every little helps' is a dangerous mantra for climate change

Plastic bag charges may seem a step forward but nudging and tweaking behaviours will never address climate change; a fundamentally different economic system is needed

In 2014, England will follow the example set by Wales and Scotland and introduce a carrier bag charge. If the Welsh and Scottish experiences are anything to go by, the policy will drastically reduce the number of bags in circulation, keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill and removing a little polythene from the diet of our cities' seagulls.

Like recycling, re-using carrier bags has become something of an iconic "sustainable behaviour". But whatever else its benefits may be, it is not, in itself, an especially good way of cutting carbon. Like all simple and painless behavioural changes, its value hangs on whether it acts as a catalyst for other, more impactful, activities or support for political changes.

The evidence from Wales is not encouraging. My colleagues at Cardiff University analysed the impact of the introduction of the carrier bag charge. Although their use reduced dramatically, rates of other low-carbon behaviours among the general public remained unaffected.

To be clear: fewer plastic bags would be a small, good thing. But as a major two-day conference at the Royal Society headquarters in London this week made clear, "every little helps" is a dangerously misleading mantra when it comes to climate change.

The Radical Plan meeting featured contributions from across the physical and social sciences, as well as civil society. The organisers – Professors Kevin Anderson and Corinne Le Quere of the Tyndall Centre – posed contributors a brutally simple question: what would need to happen if we were to do more than simply pay lip service to the idea of avoiding dangerous climate change?

The answers were undeniably radical – and none mentioned re-using plastic bags.

Scientists and engineers described the unprecedented scale of energy system change necessary to decarbonise rapidly. Social scientists argued for a transformation in the way we view ourselves, our consumption, and our role in society. Economists demolished the idea that economic growth could be maintained forever in a fossil-fuel driven, finite world. Policy experts questioned whether our current carbon targets were fit for purpose.

But across almost all of the papers presented at the conference, there was an inescapable consensus: a fundamentally different economic system is required, if we are serious about avoiding dangerous climate change, based on nurturing wellbeing rather than stoking corporate profit.

This is, of course, not a new idea. But what was striking was the convergence across contributors from the breadth of the physical and social sciences. The clear message was that unrestrained capitalism is incompatible with decarbonisation: the sums simply don't add up.

Many sceptics see the issue of climate change as no more than a figleaf for ushering in a new era of socialism. The conclusions of the Radical Plan conference are unlikely to convince them otherwise. But for the vast majority of us – who say we "get" climate change, but still somehow cling on to the idea that small, incremental behavioural changes will be sufficient – the conference should be a wake-up call.

Nudging, tweaking, or cajoling people into piecemeal behavioural changes like re-using plastic bags is not a proportionate response to climate change. Engaging the public through their personal carbon footprints is really only a means to an end – and that end is a political and economic system that has sustainability as its central organising principle.

And if these sound like radical statements, unbecoming of the stately, reserved sentiments associated with the Royal Society, then consider the prospect of a world that is four or even six degrees hotter and the havoc and suffering that would be inevitable. This is also a radical choice.

Clearly, economic systems do not overhaul themselves – and in a democracy, majority support is a prerequisite for any significant societal shift. Politicians do not take risks if they don't think the electorate will support them. And civil society cannot function without a diverse supporter-base.

This means that public engagement still lies at the heart of the challenge of climate change, but it is a form of public engagement that goes way beyond plastic bags. And any public campaign that treats minor behavioural change as a valid goal in itself is also taking a radical stance: complicity in a dangerously warmer world.

Indonesia: Local Businesses Get Help Kicking Their Plastic Habit

The resort island of Bali produces 890 metric tons of garbage every day. Imagine five blue whales or 222 elephants of pure trash washing up on the shores of Bali every 24 hours.

But rather than throw up their hands in defeat, a group of four die-hard environmentalists based in Sanur, 30 minutes from Ngurai Rai International Airport, banded together in 2012 and launched PlastikDetox, an educational effort to turn the tide on the island’s excessive use of plastic, which accounts for 10 percent to 12 percent of Bali’s trash.

To critics, the campaign might seem like a drop in the ocean. But PlastikDetox is determined all those drops will add up.

Adopting a warm and personal approach, Anna Sutanto along with the other co-founders of PlastikDetox, visit cafes and small businesses to propose that owners and managers take into consideration the amount of plastic they use and encourage them to adopt an environmentally conscious practice.

“Our biggest victory is when we see a ‘new normal’ taking hold,” says Anna. “[That means] more responsible, environment-friendly habits such as not automatically placing orders in single-use plastic bags, only giving customers straws when they [ask for them], and so on.”

There are plenty of encouraging statistics, she says, “Like Peek-a-Boo Play cafe saved 158 straws in a month, or the Fair Trade Shop, which saved 41 plastic bags in a month.”

“Now, multiply that by the number of businesses in Sanur, and multiply it again by the number of months, and we get quite a big figure. You need to attack the problem in parts and start with the easy changes,” Anna says.

The PlastikDetox campaign, which includes cafes, restaurants, a fair-trade shop and a laundry service in the area of Sanur, is very simple. Organizations willing to reduce plastic are praised on PlastikDetox’s website and Facebook page and also featured on a map of Bali highlighting eco-friendly establishments.

“We provide free training and technical support to businesses whose owners or managers are committed to reducing their use of plastic,” Anna says. “When these businesses succeed, we try to reward them through placement opportunities in local media so they get exposure for their efforts.”

PlastikDetox’s comprehensive training program provides educational material for both staff and customers.

“Our campaign is not only about putting stickers with our logo on a shop window,” Anna says. “Every year we evaluate our partners to see their progress. Sometimes there are hiccups, and in a couple of cases we have had to terminate the partnership when a partner was not following up on the agreed commitments. At the end of the day, we need to see results.”

Nadine Zamira, Miss Indonesia Earth 2009, agrees with PlastikDetox’s step-by-step approach, saying the personal touch of the campaign gives it a charming community-based approach.

“PlastikDetox is very relevant in Bali,” she says. “The island is full of small shops, cafes and restaurants.”

PlastikDetox doesn’t advocate for a 100 percent plastic-free way of life and Anna says it’s just raising awareness about cutting needless plastic use. The idea now is to scale up the Sanur campaign in bigger cities like Jakarta.

Tiza Mafira, who initiated a petition on Change.org this year to pressure Indonesia’s leading supermarkets to charge a small fee for plastic bags, says Jakarta is a tougher market to tackle but is confident that the time is right for change.

“Jakarta is bigger than Bali in size and complexity,” Tiza says.

“On the plus side, there will be more targets to convert… The network of volunteers for approaching retail outlets and implementing plastic detox training will need to be wider.”

Campaigners for a similar cause in the capital, Clean Up Jakarta, who will be doing their part on Nov. 10 to tackle the waste problem, say “there’s always hope” that ground movement like PlastikDetox can gain wider traction.

“Jakarta is filled with thousands of small businesses, which, if shown the way, would jump at the opportunity to stop using plastic bags and promote their company as a more eco-friendly business to the rest of the city,” says Angela Richardson, the Clean Up Jakarta organizer.

“PlastikDetox requires the business to do nothing but stop giving, or start charging for plastic bags, placing a sticker on their premises to showcase this, and in return get promoted to the media as a company who cares. Jakartans are hungry for a way to make a change.”

Malaysia: Teachers pitch in to clean up in vicinity of Satang Island

KUCHING: Beyond the call of education duty, two teachers from Tunku Putra School recently rolled up their sleeves to join forces with Aquabase, a dive centre located at Damai Puri Resort, to clean up the vicinity of Satang Island.

Aquabase operations manager Ting Suk Eng arranged the ecological endeavour in collaboration with The Clipperton Project (www.clippertonproject.com) who financially supported the group of divers.

The divers channelled their effort into freeing the reef from stray fishing nets and lines.

“We are blessed with this naturally beautiful area, and we want to protect and conserve it for locals and tourists to continue to enjoy the beauty of the Sarawak coastline for years to come,” Ting said in a press statement yesterday.

This endeavour will not only protect the reef from further damage, but prevent sea creatures from being entangled.

“This is the first time in two years that such a rejuvenating initiative has taken place, and our hope is for the activity to perpetuate to sustain coral life.”

According to Tunku Putra School teacher Alice Andrews, they participated in the clean-up dive of Satang Island to ensure future generations get to enjoy the wonderful corals and coast of Satang Island.

“We wanted to show to our students at Tunku Putra School the importance of protecting the environment and how each one of us can make a difference,” she said.

Be your own NGO, advocates Clinton

NILAI: Former United States president Bill Clinton urged students and guests attending his talk yesterday to become their own non-governmental organisations by contributing their time and skills to the world's future.

"Each one of us needs to become our own NGO, by contributing towards the growth and well-being of our community and country and the world as a whole by doing our part as responsible citizens.

"You don't have to be a billionaire like Bill Gates or a former president of a country, like me, in order to make a difference in the world. You have the power to do whatever, regardless what the circumstances are," he said in his address to students, business and government officials at Inti International University, here.


Clinton is the honorary chancellor of the Laureate International Universities, which owns Inti.

Also present were Lauerate Education chairman and chief executive officer Douglas L. Becker and Inti International University chairman Tan Yew Sing.

Clinton said the 21st century world, which was the most independent age of human history, had three main challenges to overcome: inequality, unsustainability and instability.


"There is a limit to what governments, private corporations and NGOs can do, and this is where private citizens and communities come in to help cope with the challenges of the modern world.

"For example, there is a rapid rate in climate change where global warming and melting ice caps are a cause for concern. We have to do something about environment unsustainability," he said, adding that Greenland's melting ice caps might render northern European countries uninhabitable.

He described Malaysia's pledge to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40 per cent by 2020 as a promising effort in helping the environment and the economy.


On inequality, he said the lack of a proper system in poor countries had caused a great deal of suffering.

In places such as Haiti, for instance, 75 per cent of the people live on less than US$2 (RM6.40) a day while a billion people worldwide are living on less than US$1 a day.

"These people are living below the poverty line. It is dramatically unequal and that inequality is going to cost an enormous amount of social unrest and political upheaval."

On the world's third major challenge, Clinton said the things that made all the information available to us on the Internet also made the world unstable.

"Networking can be good, but it is also an opportunity for disaster."

Clinton also answered a question from an undergraduate student on what this generation could do that the previous generation couldn't.

"You should not worry about what you can't do but more about what you can do and find like-minded people to help do your part together.

"The ability to have a choice is a liberating feeling and whatever choices you make in life, it shouldn't stop you from being a responsible citizen in order to make the modern world work."

On a question on world peace, Clinton advised people to be respectful of each and everyone's faith and belief.

"Spend more time thinking of good things rather than only worrying about bad things."

Climate Computer Game Lets You Decide Earth's Fate

Ever wondered how one person could save the planet from the effects of climate change? A British-made computer game on trial release on Monday creates different ways of doing just that.

'Fate of the World' puts the Earth's future in players' hands, placing them in charge of an international environmental body which could save the world from the effects of rising greenhouse gas emissions or let it perish by continuing to rely on emissions-heavy fossil fuels.

Through different scenarios, players can explore options such as geoengineering and alternative energy sources to save the planet from rising temperatures, dwindling natural resources and a growing population over the next 200 years.

A rough cut of the game will be followed by a three-month feedback period from players, with final release due in February next year.

Created by Oxford-based games developer Red Redemption, the game departs from more mainstream action games by using data from real climate models and advice from scientists and economists in Britain and the United States.

"Science data is often inaccessible and we are trying to put players in a position of power and connected with the issues," Gobion Rowlands, Red Redemption's founder and chairman told Reuters.

"We are not pushing one particular agenda. There are a range of options, including nuclear power and renewable energy. We are not saying one route is the best route," he added.

The firm has an advisory board which includes some climate change experts. Myles Allen, head of climate dynamics at Oxford University, contributed the prediction models in the game.

This year, a series of apparent flaws in climate science and the failure of U.N. talks to reach an international deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions appeared to undermine the public's interest in climate change.

However, games centered on sustainability and human rights have been growing in popularity and are welcomed by green groups as a way of raising awareness.

Using climate change as inspiration for entertainment shows the issue has permeated global culture, which can only be a good thing, Friends of the Earth's head of climate Mike Childs said. "We need creative industries to work with these big issues as the results can be immensely powerful and can help us to understand what a sustainable future looks and feels like," said Fiona Bennie, senior sustainability advisor at UK-based non-governmental organization Forum for the Future.

OXFORD, England (AFP) – Computer gamers who like a challenge can now take on one of the toughest around: saving the entire planet, this time from climate change.

Billed as a strategy game with a social conscience, "Fate of the World" sees players try to protect the world's climate and resources while managing a growing population demanding more power, food and living space.

"'Fate of the World' is a scenario-based game where you run Earth for 200 years and you save it or potentially destroy it. The whole power is in your hands," said the game's British inventor Gobion Rowlands.

The player takes charge as head of the fictional Global Environment Organisation (GEO). They can impose policies such as banning logging in the Amazon rainforest, making all Europe's public transport run on electricity or slapping a one-child policy on the whole of Asia.

However, such power comes with grave consequences.

If, for example, you decide to bring down the birth rate to protect natural resources, the workforce could plunge and people could be forced to work until 80, triggering unrest against the GEO.

Gamers see the impact of their decisions: orangutans are saved from extinction, global temperatures drop by a degree; however, bad moves could see Europe battered by floods, or Africa ravaged by war.

"Even if they choose to destroy the world, they still learn more about the subject," said Rowlands, the 35-year-old head of video games developer Red Redemption, which employs 15 people at its base in Oxford, southern England.

The game was based on scientific, economic and demographic data from sources such as NASA, the United Nations and Oxford University.

"Fate of the World" was developed in partnership with academics working under Oxford University climate change expert Doctor Myles Allen.

The game "allows people to experience the decisions we are likely to confront and makes clear there are no easy answers", Allen said.

"Fate of the World" is a sequel to Red Redemption's 2007 "Climate Challenge" game produced by the BBC, which focused only on Europe.

Despite its straightforward graphics, the game has been welcomed by environmental and development groups, which were on board throughout the process.

"This game offers a new way of telling the climate change story and helps us to reach new audiences," said Ged Barker, the British digital campaigns leader for the Oxfam aid agency.

"Those who play the game will learn about climate change... without having to read lots of material that they might find boring."

The collaboration between Red Redemption, which is on its fifth computer game, and non-governmental organisations could go further. Rowlands is trying to negotiate a deal whereby a share of the profits go to their coffers.

A taster version is available to download now. The full version will cost 20 pounds when it is released in February.

The French, Spanish and German versions come out in March.

Cashing in on cutting carbon at home

CHICAGO (AFP) – Can the promise of a free cupcake or some cold hard cash work better than dire predictions of dying polar bears and rising sea levels at getting people to cut their carbon footprint?

Two US-based startup companies certainly hope so.

Energy brokers in White Plaines, New York have launched what they hope will be a global exchange platform for selling carbon offset credits based on cutting home energy use.

They sold the first credit in January for 21.50 dollars -- yielding a 4.30 dollar brokerage fee -- and expect to sell the second in the coming weeks.

"It's an experiment," said Marissa Miraval, campaign manager for MyEex, which runs myemissionsexchange.com.

The concept is simple: finger wagging hasn't convinced most people to turn the lights off when they leave the room. But paying them a few bucks for putting a sweater on instead of turning up the heat might just do the trick.

Get enough people on board and it can have a real impact on greenhouse gas emissions. And those 20 percent brokerage fee will start to add up.

So far about 2,000 households have signed up and MyEex is working to get its method of using utility bills to track reductions certified as a legitimate carbon offset.

It's not clear whether the system will actually encourage people to cut their energy use or merely reward them for decisions they had already made.

But Miraval said it's worth a try.

"The carbon credit -- that's like the sprinkles on the icing," said Randy Wilson, who earned MyEex's first carbon credit after outfitting his Pennsylvania home with solar panels.

Wilson and his wife decided to get off the grid last year after their electricity company announced that rates were going to go up 30 to 40 percent.

They threw out their son's waterbed, switched to compact fluorescent light bulbs, and started unplugging things like computers when they weren't being used.

Then they installed a 58,000-dollar solar panel system that slashed their electricity bill from 120 dollars a month to zero.

Tax credits brought the cost down to 22,000 dollars and Wilson is earning about 2,700 dollars a year selling renewable energy certificates to area utility companies.

He figures it will have paid for itself in six years. And it saved enough energy in the first six months to power a television for 25,000 hours.

"The whole concept of saving money and getting paid to do it, that just boggles me," he told AFP.

"And when you think of the potential out there, there's hundreds of millions of homes that could at least earn one carbon credit a year."

About 17 percent of total US greenhouse gas emissions come from people's homes: heating, cooling, electricity and the noxious fumes emitted from decomposing household garbage.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that adds up to four metric tons (almost 9,000 pounds) of carbon dioxide equivalent per person every year.

Joanna Smith was amazed at how easy it was to cut back on the electricity bills in her tiny New York apartment after joining Earth Aid.

The Washington-based company offers members points that can be cashed in for rewards like free spa treatments and discounts on everything from yoga classes to energy audits and organic baby clothes.

More importantly for Smith, it tracks utility bills and sends e-mails alerting her to how much energy she's using when she forgets to turn off the lights or unplug things.

"Because of the electronic billing that I have I don't even see a bill anymore," Smith said.

"I really had no concept of my consumption prior to Earth Aid."

Earth Aid, which got its start selling energy efficiency products online, spent two years developing a system which can automatically access and analyze electronic bills from most US utilities.

"We've always had a part passion on our team, a measure of quantification -- getting the facts in front of folks and doing it in a way that doesn't burden people," chief executive officer Ben Bixby said.

More than 160 companies across the country have signed up as reward partners and thousands of people are tracking their energy use with the free service.

One of the most popular rewards is a 25-dollar gift certificate at Founding Farmers, an upscale restaurant in Washington which sources its food from organic and sustainable farms.

"We looked at Earth Aid and just thought it was genius," said Dan Simons, who helped develop the restaurant.

Encouraging people to live more sustainable lives is part of the core mission of the restaurant, he said, and the program is a great way to reach out to a "warm target audience".

"If they care about that they definitely care about the type of food we're doing."

16 ways to cut 16 per cent

If you are an average Singaporean and want to play your part in helping the nation cut down on its carbon emissions, what can you really do?

THE Government is committed to cutting carbon emissions by 16 per cent below 'business as usual' levels by 2020 if a legally binding global deal on climate change is struck.

Even without a global agreement, it plans to cut 7 per cent to 11 per cent of emissions.

Singaporeans sat up and took notice when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cautioned in his New Year's Day message that this would not be a 'light commitment'.

'Achieving it will require all households, firms and the economy to make significant adjustments,' he said.

Going by the Prime Minister's reference to 'a combination of regulations, price signals and fiscal incentives', the measures could well translate into something like a carbon tax, and subsidies for investments in environmentally friendlier technologies.

Industry knows full well that it will bear the brunt of the cuts as it is responsible for 54 per cent of Singapore's carbon emissions.

Although households account for 9 per cent of the emissions, they would also have to shoulder part of the carbon-reduction responsibility.

To achieve the 16 per cent target, households will have to cut one million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2020. This is about the amount expended on 500 return trips to the moon.

Policymakers are still mulling over the measures to be implemented progressively over the next decade but the bottom line, as PM Lee put it, is crystal clear: Lifestyles will have to change.

Driving less and relying more on public transport was one of the examples he cited. Perhaps road tax will rise. Certainly, the price of electricity will go up if a carbon tax is imposed.

The 16 per cent target may not be realised until 2020. But rather than wait for pain to be inflicted, Singaporeans can start to make emission-cutting changes to their lifestyles from today.

So, in the spirit of New Year resolution making, Insight presents 16 ways an average Singaporean can cut down on his carbon emissions by 16 per cent or more.

These tips and ideas are gleaned from the Energy Studies Institute, government bodies and green websites.

# KEEP COOL CHEAPLY

WHEN you rub the sleep off your eyes in air-conditioned comfort, reflect on the cost. Seriously.

Air-conditioning is the biggest single item on your utility bill - accounting for an average 35 per cent of a household's electricity usage. Even if you have a 'four-tick' unit - considered the most energy efficient - humming at 24 deg C and leaving it on all night chalks up about 8 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

In contrast, a rotating ceiling fan results in only about 0.15 tonne of carbon emissions a year or about 53 times less. According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), switching to a fan saves you $555 a year.

But if you cannot do without artificially cooled air, consider raising the temperature by a few degrees. NEA estimates that for every degree raised, you save $20 a year.

# GO MEATLESS ON MONDAYS

AS YOUR thoughts turn to lunch, here is something to mull over.

Meat consumption as well as cow farts exact an environmental toll. The production of 1kg of beef emits the same amount of carbon as a car driven 250km.

Singaporeans may think their diets are healthier than those of obese Americans. But according to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, Singaporeans ate an average of 90kg of meat and fish per person in 2007. The figure for Americans is 90.7kg per year.

Go without meat one day of the week. Indeed, an online petition is making the rounds calling on the Government to officially recognise 'Meat-Free Mondays'. It is signed by 382 people, many of whom are not Singaporeans. Well, foreigners are not supposed to have a say in domestic matters but it is the thought that counts.

# CALCULATE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

AS THE post-lunch inertia sets in and you need a distraction from work, indulge in some earth-friendly procrastinatory activities.

Calculate your carbon footprint online. It is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of your daily activities: from the energy used to power your electronics to the emissions released from your mode of transport.

Going through the process of toting up all these figures, like counting your daily calories or expenses, will illuminate where carbon reduction is possible.

# LIVE CHEMICAL-FREE

VANITY has a price. Beauty products often come in non-biodegradable plastic containers and result in chemicals going down the drain. Sure, you can spend a lot of money on natural, organic products in hemp containers. Or you can do it yourself.

Most women know about homemade quick fixes like placing warm tea bags on their eyes to reduce puffiness.

Why not take it to the next level and mix your own products? You can make body scrub from sea salt and baby oil, or mix a face mask by beating together egg white and lemon juice.

# GO HYBRID OR TURN LEFT ONLY

WHEN you drive an air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned office, you are contributing to a staggering carbon output.

The emissions from cars, buses and other vehicles account for five times more carbon emissions than the total amount of electricity used by all households in Singapore in a year.

A 2,000cc car which is on the road less than 10km a day contributes 0.4 tonne of carbon emissions a year.

So if you give up your car, you can easily cut more than 16 per cent from your total carbon emissions. Voila!

If that is too big a sacrifice, drive a hybrid car which will reduce your emissions by 17.2 per cent for every 1.6km.

Remember the age-old advice from the Automobile Association: clear your boot and inflate your tyres correctly to lower petrol consumption.

Take a tip from the UPS experiment. In America, the package delivery company maps out routes for its drivers that involve only right turns. No engines need to idle while waiting to turn left.

By doing so, the company cut down its carbon emissions by 32,000 tonnes in 2007. That is the equivalent of removing 5,300 cars from the roads.

Over here, motorists drive on the left. So if you plan to take up this idea, it would mean making only left turns.

# PAY TO PLANT A TREE

HERE is another thought to mull over during your tea break: Do you know that the Vatican is considered carbon neutral? That is because it planted a forest in Hungary's B�kk National Park which will offset all its carbon emissions.

A forest may be beyond your means, but a tree is not. Some Internet portals allow you to pay to plant a tree or invest in a hydropower plant.

# SHOWER FOR FIVE MINUTES

JUMP into the shower, but do not linger. A five-minute hot shower makes for 0.7 tonne of carbon emissions a year, and a 15-minute soak in the tub will multiply that by three.

The five-minute challenge will save you 400 litres of water a week, which will cut your water usage by about two thirds.

Use a 'pea-sized' dollop of shampoo and conditioner rather than the palmful you tend to squeeze out.

Less chemicals washed down the drain means less pollution and less energy used in purifying and cleaning the water.

Blow-dry your hair? Think again. A hair dryer sucks up energy disproportionately and quickly. It uses more energy than your microwave oven. Besides, it is bad for your hair as it weakens the strands by exposing them to heat.

Go to sleep with wet hair pinned up instead to achieve that bounce and volume. Worried about catching a cold if you sleep with wet hair? Well, not if you turn the air-conditioning off.

# FLUSH LESS

REMEMBER, whenever you flush the toilet, about 19 litres of water go down the chute. In a more efficient toilet, it is about 6 litres, which - to put it in perspective - is the amount of blood the human body contains.

Pee in the shower. Yes, really. Nobody is watching anyway.

# SWITCH OFF THE MAINS

BEFORE you leave the house for work, do a quick stretch to get the heart pumping.

How? Crouching and reaching to switch off your mains can bring your electricity bill down by $45 a year, according to NEA.

That is because the electricity usage of your appliances and other electronic equipment on 'standby' mode while you are out all day can go up to 10 per cent of your total consumption.

# IS YOUR FRIDGE TEMPERATURE SET RIGHT?

MANY refrigerators are set at a temperature that is unnecessarily cold. Your refrigerator only needs to be at 4 deg C to keep food fresh.

# CHANGE YOUR BULBS

YOU can easily hit the 16 per cent target by switching all your bulbs to compact fluorescent lamp bulbs, which use 80 per cent less energy than normal. The NEA says each bulb will save you $15 per year.

# IT PAYS TO BE LAZY

SURVEY your kitchen to see what can be substituted to help the environment. For instance, use tupperware instead of cling film, and rags instead of paper towels.

Invest in a dishwasher. This saves up to 40 per cent more water than washing dishes by hand. Sometimes you can pay to be lazy, and it pays to be lazy.

THE tip on the left may give you an idea for a weekend activity.

If a forest in Hungary seems too far-fetched, consider planting something closer to home. Many Singaporeans waste money and time in an air-conditioned gymnasium when they can engage in more natural activities downstairs.

From 'urban boy' to green champion

Teacher gets school and students to pitch in to save the environment

NATURE photography, Star Wars Lego models and Apple electronics are just some of the things Mr Eric Low has been passionate about.

Now, the 34-year-old schoolteacher has a new cause: cutting carbon emissions through clean energy.

At Dunman Secondary School in Tampines, where he teaches mathematics and chemistry, he persuaded the school to include a 2kw solar panel in the design for its rooftop garden.

The panel, which tracks the sun to convert as much of its energy as possible, was paid for through fund-raisers and a Ministry of Education seed fund.

It powers the water pumps at the garden's hydroponics set-up and provides some excess power that is fed back into the school's electricity network.

And he is paying $60,000 to install a 6kw solar panel at his house in Changi - a panel so large, it actually overhangs the existing roof and doubles as a shelter for the balcony.

When it is installed, it will provide enough power for four to six air-conditioners - effectively powering the whole house and getting rid of his $300 monthly electricity bill.

A solar panel that size will take 30 to 50 years to pay for itself in electricity savings, but Mr Low says he is not driven by cost savings alone. Going green is his aim.

He picks products with minimal packaging, avoids switching on the air-conditioner and tries not to use plastic bags.

The self-described 'urban boy' grew up in Queenstown and Choa Chu Kang, but says he has always preferred nature to crowds.

'I haven't even been to Ion Orchard or 313,' he said, referring to the two brand-new malls on Orchard Road.

About seven or eight years ago, while Mr Low was dating his then girlfriend and now wife Deanna, the couple would wine and dine, not at downtown restaurants, but at the Choa Chu Kang Farmart.

Around 2003, he picked up nature photography - starting in neighbourhood parks like Bishan Park and moving on to reserves like the Sungei Buloh wetlands.

Mr Low's passion has spread to his family and students.

He caught the hydroponics bug when he was put in charge of student gardeners at Dunearn Secondary in Bukit Batok in 2002.

When he transferred to Dunman Secondary three years ago, he introduced a hydroponics garden there as well.

Put in charge of the computer club, he got the members to program simple iPhone applications for measuring personal carbon footprints.

After writing a carbon-footprint program, one of his young charges put the carbon-cutting tips into action.

Secondary 3 student Muhammad Aliff Rahmad found his carbon footprint slightly above average.

'Now, I use the air-con less and take public transport instead of using my father's car,' he said.

Mr Low even talked his father-in-law, property developer Alan Koh of Gold Island Development, into putting solar panels on some of his new houses.

'You don't have to live in the Stone Age to be green,' Mr Low says. 'Just use less and waste less.'

However, there are some contradictions which suggest that even a green champion has some way to go.

He and his wife, who runs an education centre, have two cars; and despite living relatively near work, he drives there each day.

Sometimes, convenience trumps conscience, he says with a wry smile.

Reduce, reuse, recycle... and eat less meat

Getting that steak on your plate involves release of considerable amount of greenhouse gases

What is a major beef among climate change supporters? They say eating meat like beef is bad news for the environment.

There is now a growing call to watch what you eat for reasons besides your health.

As world leaders gather at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen from tomorrow to tackle the rise in global temperatures, thoughts may also turn to action on a more personal level.

Recycling and taking public transport are well-known measures but there is a growing clamour to eat less meat to cut carbon emissions. The livestock sector is one of the largest sources, responsible for 18 per cent of global emissions from human activities.

A report by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation explains that livestock emits considerable amounts of the three main greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide through breathing, methane through the digestive process and nitrous oxide from manure.

Meat of all kinds contributes to these, with beef topping the charts in the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released.

In Singapore, beef is the third most popular meat, but trails quite far behind chicken and pork, which are not as environment-damaging as beef.

Crops such as rice and corn also release GHGs but at a much lower rate than livestock, which accounts for 80 per cent of emissions from agriculture.

For example, a serving of broccoli, eggplant, cauliflower and rice combined will still produce about 25 times less carbon emissions than a slab of steak.

Various campaigns to get people to go flexitarian and give up meat for just a day a week have gathered momentum.

The United States' Meatless Monday campaign, started by the Centre for a Livable Future in association with Johns Hopkins' Bloom-berg School of Public Health, now has a presence in Britain, Brazil, Holland, Canada, Finland and Taiwan.

Ghent, a town in Belgium with a population of 240,000, in May became the first city in the world to establish a vegetarian day each week. Thursday Veggie Day is a campaign by the Ethical Vegetarian Alternative (EVA), Belgium's biggest vegetarian organisation with 3,300 members.

EVA's founder-director Tobias Leenaert told The Sunday Times that the day has been well received. In the city's 35 schools, 95 per cent of students have opted to go meatless on Thursdays.

'The long-term aim is that in the next four years, 80 per cent of the country takes part in Veggie Day. A longer-term aim is to see 80 per cent of people eating meat only once a week - in the next 20 years,' said Mr Leenaert, 36.

Two other cities in Belgium have followed Ghent's lead. Sao Paulo in Brazil and Tel Aviv in Israel have also backed a meat-free day. The Vegetarian Society of Singapore hopes to start such a campaign next year.

A group of students at the National University of Singapore began promoting Meatout Thursdays in September on campus.

Members of Students Against Violation of the Earth put up pos-ters around campus touting vegeta-rian dishes as 'meatout' options.

The group's vice-president Goh Hong Yi, 20, said that while it was not possible to estimate how many people on campus adhere to the non-meat Thursdays, a pre-campaign survey found that 3,000 out of 10,000 students polled were willing to take part.

Several major scientific studies have linked red meat - high in saturated fat and protein - to some cancers, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

A World Health Organisation study, published last year, showed that a 1 per cent decrease in the intake of saturated fat, found in meat and dairy products, would result in about 13,000 fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease in Europe each year.

The Health Promotion Board in Singapore says on its website that there is evidence that a well-balanced and healthy vegetarian diet usually means a lower body mass index, lower blood cholesterol levels and reduced risk of death from heart disease.

Health debates aside, the benefit to the environment of eating less meat is undisputed, experts say.

Dr Rachendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Pa-nel on Climate Change, set up to provide scientific information on climate change, has spoken on the issue.

In his lecture Less Meat, Less Heat: Impacts Of Livestock On Climate Change delivered in Ghent last year, he estimated that if a region with a population of about six million were to go vegetarian one day a week for a year, it would have the same effect on the environment as taking 500,000 cars off the road.

Livestock also contributes to climate change when forests, which absorb carbon dioxide, are chopped down to clear land for pasture and crops for animal feed.

Dr Pachauri points out that 70 per cent of deforested land in the Amazon is used for cattle pasture and feed crops cover a large part of the remainder.

The production of meat also uses more water than crops such as rice and corn. Beef needs15,500 litres of water for a kilogram, compared with 900 litres for a kilogram of corn and 3,000 litres for the same amount of rice.

'A reduction in the size of the livestock industry through reduced consumption is the most effective way of cutting GHGs from animal production,' he said.

Greenpeace International Sustainable Agriculture campaigner Jan van Aken said a meat-free day a week could reduce emissions from cattle by 10 to 20 per cent.

Greenpeace estimates every kilogram of beef eaten produces about the same amount of greenhouse gases as flying 100km - about one-third the distance between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Five eco-crimes we commit every day

WHEN the UN Climate Change Conference opens in Copenhagen next month, all eyes will be on the delegates' efforts to broker a deal that will prevent catastrophic global warming. Yet amid all the talk of caps, targets and trading, it is easy to forget who is ultimately responsible for the mess we find ourselves in. I have long argued that climate change begins at home. Each of us in the developed world has played our part in creating this problem and, while there is no doubt that coordinated global action is needed to tackle it, we can each be part of the solution.

So, ask yourself this: how green am I really? You might think you are doing your bit for the environment, but even if you shun bottled water, buy local produce and reuse your plastic bags, chances are that you have some habits that are far more environmentally damaging than you realise. What's more, if everyone else is doing these things too, their detrimental effects really add up.
1 Coffee

Take coffee. Its vendors are in the vanguard of those promoting more "sustainable" products, with organic and fair trade options now widely available. Starbucks even boasts a programme it calls Shared PlanetTM programme - the irony of that trademark appears to be lost on them - which has the declared aim of minimising the company's environmental impact and increasing involvement with local communities.

That's no bad thing, as far as it goes: fair trade can help to stop the exploitation of farmers, and buying organic may ensure more sustainable production techniques. But the average cup of black filter coffee is still responsible for 125 grams of CO2 emissions. Of this, two-thirds comes from production and most of the rest from brewing.

Opting for the more prosaic joys of instant coffee reduces that figure to around 80 grams. Yet that still means a six-a-day caffeine habit clocks up more than 175 kilograms of CO2 each year. That's the equivalent of a flight across Europe - from London to Rome, say. Add milk, and the methane belched by dairy cows means you increase your coffee's climate-changing emissions by more than a third.

It doesn't end there, though. The environmental group WWF has calculated that it takes 200 litres of water to produce the coffee, milk, sugar and cup for just one regular takeout latte. So if everyone ditched their pre-work coffee fix that would do wonders for the planet.
2 Toilet paper

Then there's toilet paper. Like coffee companies, loo paper manufacturers have long provided options for environmentally conscious consumers. Top of the list is 100 per cent recycled paper, which avoids much of the energy use and emissions associated with harvesting and processing new wood. Every kilogram of recycled tissue saves some 30 litres of water and between 3 and 4 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Since 1 kilowatt-hour of grid electricity is responsible for around 500 grams of CO2, that means a saving of 1.5 to 2 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of tissue.

Recycled toilet tissue is most widely used in Europe and Latin America, but even there it still only accounts for 1 in 5 rolls. In the US it remains very much a niche product. The average American gets through 23 toilet rolls each year, adding up to more than 7 billion rolls for the country in total. Of these, just 1 in 50 are from 100 per cent recycled fibres. As Greenpeace pointed out earlier this year, this not only wastes energy and water, it also puts additional logging pressure on old-growth forest in North America, forests which play a vital role in supporting native biodiversity.

The reason toilet roll made from new wood is preferred is quite simple: its long fibres produce the softest and fluffiest paper. Every time paper is recycled, the fibres become shorter, making for an increasingly rough bathroom experience. Recycled paper can't compete on softness so some use of new wood by the toilet paper industry may be inevitable. Sourcing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved toilet tissue will help to ensure that any new wood fibres that are added to the mix have come from sustainable forestry projects that protect, rather than threaten, old-growth forest ecosystems.
3 Fast fashion

Next on my list of everyday decadence is fast fashion. In 1990, global textile production stood at 40 million tonnes. By 2005 that figure had risen to around 60 million tonnes. This surge in manufacture and consumption has been helped by fast-moving fashion trends and sweatshop price tags. As a result, much of the clothing we buy ends up being discarded long before it has worn out. In the UK, where the average item is worn for less than a third of its useful lifespan, more than a million tonnes of clothing are thrown away each year. The bulk of it ends up buried like woolly lasagne sheets in landfill sites or being used as multicoloured incinerator fodder.

Even the global economic crisis appears to have had little impact on our love affair with fast fashion; UK clothing sales this summer were up 11 per cent on the same time last year. If we can't entirely kick the habit, we can at least dispose of the evidence in a greener way.

At present, in the UK and US, only around a quarter of unwanted textiles are reused or recycled. Recycled textiles have many uses, from mattress fillings and upholstery to bags and shoes, but the truly green alternative is reuse. The energy required to collect, process and sell a reused item of clothing is only 2 per cent of the energy required to manufacture a new garment. Every kilogram of virgin cotton preserved by reusing second-hand clothing saves 65 kilowatt-hours of energy, equivalent to about 32.5 kilograms of CO2. For polyester, the savings rise to 90 kilowatt-hours per kilogram.

The clothing and textile sector in the UK alone is responsible for more than 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Switching to second-hand alternatives could therefore yield some big energy savings and cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
4 Laundry

Fast fashion has created textile mountains in many homes, yet the environmental cost of this excessive consumption has an even less conspicuous twin: the energy used to launder it all. Cleanliness has become a touchstone of domestic life since advertisers convinced us that our shirts must always be "whiter than white", our sheets should forever smell of spring flowers, and that to be dressed in freshly laundered clothes at all times is a badge of success. We live in a "wear once and wash" culture. In fact, only about 7.5 per cent of the average laundry load in the UK is thought to be heavily soiled. Much of the rest is made up of items that are stuffed into the washing machine simply because they are on the floor instead of in the wardrobe (Sustainable Fashion and Textiles by Kate Fletcher, Earthscan, 2008). This habit is shockingly wasteful in terms of water, detergents and energy.

One study found that over 80 per cent of the CO2 emissions produced during the life cycle of a single polyester blouse arose from cleaning and drying it. The percentage can be even higher for items made of cotton, as they tend to require far more energy-hungry drying.

It is easy to see how these emissions stack up. A full load in a washing machine uses around 1.2 kilowatt-hours of electricity per cycle and tumble drying clocks up a further 3.5 kilowatt-hours, resulting in over 2 kilograms of CO2 emissions per wash. With four or five loads per household per week, the total annual emissions from each home can easily pass the half-tonne mark. That's a significant proportion of the 10-tonne annual emissions of the average European. Line drying, washing at lower temperatures and ensuring full rather than partial loads will all help to reduce laundry emissions. For the largest cuts, simply washing less frequently is the way to go.
5 Food wastage

Of all the facets of overconsumption that plague both human society and the global environment, food wastage is the most shocking. US households throw away around 30 per cent of their food, worth $48 billion every year. Similar levels of wastage are seen in Europe. In the UK, some 6.7 million tonnes of food is binned annually. Most of this joins the layers of unwanted clothing in landfill sites, where it decomposes, emitting the powerful greenhouse gas methane. Potatoes top the pile, with 359,000 tonnes going uneaten each year. Bread and apples are not far behind. Meat and fish are next, accounting for over 160,000 tonnes, followed by 78,000 tonnes of cooked rice and pasta. A staggering 4.8 billion grapes go the same way, as do 480 million yogurts and 200 million rashers of bacon. The annual cost to UK consumers of all this waste is £10 billion and the cost to the environment is the equivalent of an extra 15 million tonnes of CO2 (The Food We Waste, WRAP, 2008).

The cost of food wastage reverberates down the supply chain, increasing requirements for storage, transport and packaging. But the biggest impact by far comes in food production. For almost all the food we buy, the bulk of its greenhouse gas emissions arise here. This is especially true for meat and dairy produce. For example, 40,200 tonnes of milk are wasted each year in the UK, adding up to the equivalent of 40,000 tonnes of CO2. This is comparable to the annual CO2 emissions of 10,000 cars, or of flying 30,000 people from London to New York and back.

In their 2008 report, WRAP, the UK's Waste & Resources Action Programme, examined just why people throw so much food away. The most common reasons were that the food had been left on plates after a meal, was out of date, or simply "looked bad". WRAP is now running a campaign to reduce food wastage. It aims to promote better management of food at home by encouraging people to prepare the right amount of food, keep an eye on use-by dates, and store food in appropriate conditions. As consumers we should also think more carefully before we shop. Check what you have already got, make a shopping list and, most importantly, don't do the weekly shop when you are hungry.

This list is far from complete and you may disagree with my choices. Perhaps you would include air conditioning, flushing toilets or popular science magazines on your list. Maybe you consider soft toilet roll or your morning latte as non-negotiable. If so, join the debate in the comments below. What's not in doubt, though, is that the cumulative effects of our everyday decisions can make a big difference to the global environment. Knowing just how damaging they are today may help us to make better choices tomorrow.

Gas-guzzling gadgets

Widescreen TVs

Last year, consumer electronics became the biggest user of electricity in UK homes. TV sets have led the regime change. As prices have fallen, size and energy demands have risen. Some plasma TV screens now measure more than 150 centimetres and, assuming average use, cause the emission of almost a tonne of CO2 each year. In 2005, TV sets used 8 per cent of the electricity consumed in the UK and this is predicted to almost double by 2020 (The Ampere Strikes Back, UK Energy Saving Trust; bit.ly/4h7IM7). This will mean an increase from just over 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually to more than 8.5 million tonnes. In the US, emissions attributable to TV use now top 30 million tonnes a year.

Plug-in air fresheners

Compared to watching TV on screens so large that they need a reinforced wall to hang on, the energy used by a plug-in air freshener seems positively spartan. At about 1 watt each their electricity demand is tiny, but they are busy wafting their approximation of apple and cinnamon odours around our homes 24/7. For a plug-in fanatic, half a dozen of them chugging away all year will emit the equivalent of 28 kilograms of CO2 - another tiny addition to the less fragrant outpourings of our power stations.

Patio heaters

The must-have garden accessory of a few years ago, the patio heater remains the domestic antithesis of climate change mitigation. The little useful heat that does manage to redden the foreheads of those clustered nearby comes at a cost of around 10 kilograms of CO2 for just four hours' use.

In-car gizmos

Instead of I-spy and guess-the-colour-of-the-next-car, in-car entertainment is now more likely to feature a plug-in games console or a passenger TV screen. Meanwhile, the badly folded map book has given way to intermittent commentary from a dashboard-mounted satnav. The extra energy demands of such devices, together with ever more powerful aircon systems, can result in fuel efficiency plummeting by more than 20 per cent.

Europeans Could Save Planet For $3 A Day: Study

BRUSSELS - Europeans could help cut climate warming emissions to much safer levels for just 2 euros ($3) each per day, but they would also have to cut back on driving and meat eating, a report said Tuesday.

Other long-term changes would include using the train instead of flying for journeys of under 1,000 km, said the report by the Stockholm Environment Institute, commissioned by Friends of the Earth Europe (FOEE).

The study targets a European cut in climate-warming emissions such as carbon dioxide to 40 percent below 1990 levels over the next decade.

"It's not just about investment, it's also about lifestyle changes," said FOEE campaigner Sonja Meister. "This report shows one pathway that would see air travel in the EU cut by 10 percent by 2020 and travel in private cars by 4 percent."

"Travel by rail would rise by 9 percent, and meat consumption would be reduced by about 60 percent," she added.

The European Union has pledged to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, the main gas blamed for climate change, to 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.

It also says it will cut by nearly a third if other rich nations agree to follow suit when they meet for global climate talks in Copenhagen in December.

But many scientists say much deeper cuts are needed from rich nations to keep the climate temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius.

Poorer countries preparing for Copenhagen say industrialized nations caused the climate problem in the first place and should cut emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels.

That could be achieved in Europe for a cost of 2 trillion euros, or around 2 percent of cumulative gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade, said the report.

"Put another way, this cost would be the equivalent of temporarily holding GDP constant for about one year before resuming normal growth," it added.

The cost equates to about 2 euros per European per day, but that does not take account of the positive impact of job creation and reduced spending on hydrocarbon imports.

True to FOEE's politics, the assessment excludes the use of nuclear energy or carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology that would allow European power suppliers to keep on burning coal. It also rules out most carbon offsetting.

Instead, it assumes Europeans will accept higher taxes and make major lifestyle changes -- something politicians have not yet dared demand.

Such lifestyle changes could be continued to 2050, leading to a 90 percent cut in emissions, said the report.

Journeys in private cars would be cut to 43 percent of all journeys by 2050, compared to roughly 75 percent today, while people would switch from air travel to rail for 80 percent of the flights being made today of less than 1,000 km.

Wind power would be scaled up from its current 3.3 percent share of generating capacity to 22 percent in 2020 and 55 percent in 2050.

Climate change survey says 83% in the UK willing to make sacrifices

More than 80 per cent of people believe climate change is a serious threat and are willing to make sacrifices to combat it, a survey by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) showed today.

Just 17 per cent of the 1,000 people polled were not prepared to change their travel habits to tackle the climate change problem.

Of the rest, all thought that climate change was either a serious or very serious threat to the British way of life.

The poll found:

* 9 per cent were prepared to make significant changes to their travel habits, such as getting rid of their car altogether or cutting out air travel completely;

* 38 per cent were happy to make moderate changes, such as investing in a green car, starting a car-share scheme or limiting air travel;

* 36 per cent would make minimal changes, such as taking public transport or riding a bike more often.

The survey coincided with the release of the ICE's report, State of the Nation - Low Carbon Infrastructure, which explained why infrastructure, alongside behaviour change and political action is fundamental to creating a low-carbon society.

The report concluded that to meet ambitious carbon targets, new and existing transport, energy, waste and water networks needed to be adapted and developed to minimise emissions and highlighted the role this infrastructure had to play in changing individual and collective behaviours.

Among the short-term solutions identified in the report were rail electrification, which had the potential to reduce the carbon impact of the railways, onshore and offshore wind farms, an upgrade of the energy grid and combined heat and power plants.

ICE president Paul Jowitt said: "Delivering cuts in emissions on the scale needed and within the time restraints that exist will require radical changes in behaviour and society.

"However, public behaviour is restricted by the choices available to them. We need to transform the infrastructure that makes up the fabric of society and underpins economic activity so that the only choices we make are low carbon ones."

Green beliefs win legal protection

Landmark ruling means employees can sue for unfair dismissal

Employees who raise concerns about their company's environmental practices won the right to legal redress yesterday after a judge ruled that green beliefs deserved the same protection in the workplace as religious convictions.

In a landmark ruling which legal experts said could open the floodgates to thousands of claims Mr Justice Burton ruled that environmental views should be protected under the employment equality laws.

The appeal judge's decision means that workers who are victimised for their strong environmental views such as how a company should deal with cutting carbon emissions, managing waste or using aviation to travel to meetings, can bring compensation claims against employers.

Employment lawyers said that a payout under the new interpretation of the law could be unlimited.

In yesterday's case Tim Nicholson, a former executive of the giant property company Grainger, claimed his redundancy last year was a direct result of his green opinions – which put him at odds with other senior executives within the firm. Mr Nicholson is taking the company, Britain's largest residential landlord, to an employment tribunal to seek compensation for his dismissal, and asked the court to allow him to use special legislation which protects people's rights to hold religious and philosophical beliefs at work – the Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations, 2003. He claims that his concern about the environment in general, and climate change in particular, amounts to a philosophical belief under the meaning of the regulations. Yesterday the judge confirmed the view of an employment judge at a pre-hearing review in March – revealed in The Independent – that it does.

Grainger had appealed against the earlier judgment, claiming that Mr Nicholson's views were not the same as religious or philosophical beliefs.

But Judge Burton, sitting at the Employment Appeal Tribunal, said yesterday: "If a person can establish that he holds a philosophical belief which is based on science as opposed, for example, to religion, then there is no reason to disqualify it from protection."

The decision means that Mr Nicholson, 42, who now works for a green medical charity in Oxford, can go ahead and use the regulations to bring his case against his former employers. He said: "I am grateful that Mr Justice Burton understood that deeply and genuinely held views about catastrophic climate change and the need to change our ways to protect the human race are philosophical views that are worthy of protection. Such views are more and more relevant to our planet's survival."

Arpita Dutt, a partner in employment law at Russell Jones and Walker, said that the case would be of great benefit to many employees. "For claimants in this country there is no doubt that this is a very good judgment... But they will have to be able to show that they acted in good faith and not for any financial advantage." She said that the legal argument on this point could be eventually heard in the Court of Appeal or even the Supreme Court.

Michael Burd, joint head of the employment group at Lewis Silkin, said that the ruling was important but the test as to what constitutes environmental belief worthy of protection was a high one. He said: "It was established in a judgment in 2007 that a belief has to have sufficient cogency and cohesion worthy of respect within a democratic society. Not all cases will meet this test."

Peter Mooney, who is head of consultancy at Employment Law Advisory Services, said: "The ramifications of Tim Nicholson winning this test case are massive. In essence victory will put employees who hold strong environmental beliefs in the same category – and with the same protection – as workers who hold strong religious beliefs."

He added: "Consequently he could be in line for unlimited damages. This would open the floodgates for others who believe their employers have victimised them simply because of their views on the environment and how business deals with pressing environmental issues such as climate change and reducing our carbon emissions."

Mr Nicholson claims his beliefs affect his whole life. He no longer travels in aeroplanes, has renovated his home to be more eco-friendly and says he fears for the future of the human race.

He accused Grainger's chief executive, Rupert Dickinson, of showing "contempt" for his concerns and claimed he once flew a member of staff to Ireland to deliver his BlackBerry which he had left in London.

Mr Nicholson was selected for redundancy from Grainger and stopped working for the firm as head of sustainability in July last year.

Grainger corporate affairs director Dave Butler said: "Grainger absolutely maintains, as it has done from the very outset of these proceedings, that Mr Nicholson's redundancy was driven solely by the operational needs of the company during a period of extraordinary market turbulence, which also required other structural changes to be made within the company."

He added: "Grainger rejects outright any suggestion that there was any other motivation relating to Mr Nicholson's beliefs or otherwise. Grainger has a long-held commitment to acting as a responsible landlord, employer and member of the business community."


Former sustainability boss wins right to tribunal over climate change views

A man who claims his quasi-religious environmental beliefs led to his sacking won his fight to take his former employer to a tribunal yesterday.

Tim Nicholson, 42, former head of sustainability at Grainger, one of the UK's largest property companies, claims his views on climate change were so serious it led to clashes with other senior staff.

Nicholson, from Oxford, accused Grainger's chief executive, Rupert Dickinson, of showing "contempt" for his concerns, and claimed he once flew a member of staff to Ireland to deliver his BlackBerry which he had left in London.

His case can now go ahead after an employment appeal judge ruled in his favour, based on a ruling that such a strong environmental conviction is akin to a religious belief.

His solicitor, Shah Qureshi, said: "Essentially what the judgment says is that a belief in man-made climate change and the alleged resulting moral imperative is capable of being a philosophical belief and is therefore protected by the 2003 religion or belief regulations."

Nicholson, who claimed he was unfairly dismissed due to his "philosophical belief about climate change and the environment", said that his opinions affect his whole lifestyle. He does not travel by plane and has renovated his home to be more eco-friendly.

In a witness statement to a previous hearing, he said: "I have a strongly held philosophical belief about climate change and the environment. I believe we must urgently cut carbon emissions to avoid catastrophic climate change."

"This affects how I live my life ... I encourage others to cut their carbon emissions and I fear for the future of the human race."

In March, the employment judge David Neath gave him permission to take the firm to tribunal over his treatment, but the ruling was challenged by Grainger on the ground that green views are not the same as religious or philosophical beliefs.

The firm maintained that environmental views are political and a "lifestyle choice" which cannot be compared to religion or philosophy. Tim Nicholson now runs the health care section of the 10:10 climate change campaign.

Convince public on climate to save planet: experts

LONDON (Reuters) - The public needs to be convinced about the threat of climate change so governments are under pressure to adopt strong policies and extend a U.N. pact to fight climate change in Copenhagen this December, experts say.

Persuading the public that the long-term effects of climate change could be averted by action now should be a top priority, psychology experts said at a climate change psychology conference in London this week.

Just two more high-level meetings of ministers from over 190 countries are scheduled before a climate summit in Copenhagen on December 7-18, and they are still haggling over a new deal.

"Progress can sometimes happen without much public involvement but climate change is not one of those issues," said Paul Stern of the U.S. National Research Council, which advises the U.S. government on issues such as health and science.

Scientists say rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, from greater fossil fuel use, mass deforestation and increased transportation, will lead not only to flooding, but widespread drought, famine and disease, especially in poor countries.

INCREASE CONCERN

Statistics have shown that people's interest in and understanding of climate change in certain countries has fallen recently, partly because the economic crisis has made the environment less of a priority.

Less than half of Britons believe climate change will affect them during their lifetime and less than a fifth think it will impact their children, a UK government survey found this month.

A Pew Research Center poll showed that 57 percent of Americans believe there is solid evidence of global warming, down from 71 percent last year.

Australian voters no longer see climate change as the top policy issue, ranking it seventh out of 10 possible foreign policy goals, an opinion poll found this month.

"The economic crisis has probably shifted people's value concerns away from the environment and toward their short-term economic self interest," Tim Kasser, psychology professor at Knox College in Illinois, told Reuters separately in an email.

Voters may also become disengaged due to overly scientific explanations, misinformation campaigns and even some media coverage, experts said.

"It's about making sure communications with the public are meaningful, immediate, tangible and concrete. Talking over people's heads results in disinterest or apathy," David Uzzell, environmental psychology professor at the University of Surrey, said on the fringes of the conference.

Current weather patterns do not necessarily cause the public immediate concern and the long-term impacts of climate change are not tangible and seem a long way off.

"Climate change doesn't necessarily fit with the usual ways of understanding the world. Seeing isn't necessarily believing but misleading," Stern told Reuters.

It is hoped that campaigns to involve the public more in the climate debate will raise understanding.

A website, hopenhagen.org, was launched in September to increase awareness of the U.N. summit.

U.S. households could cut emissions sharply: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States could cut climate-changing carbon emissions significantly over the next decade by getting American households to take actions that require no new laws or regulations and no loss of well-being, a report said on Monday.

A research team led by Michigan State University estimated that 7.4 percent of current U.S. emissions -- slightly more than the total emissions of France -- could be eliminated in 10 years if U.S. households became energy-efficient by adopting available forms of technology, including more fuel-efficient cars and home heating systems.

The result could help buy time for the environment while the United States and other countries consider longer-term solutions to reduce carbon emissions such as the cap-and-trade strategy now being debated in the U.S. Congress.

The researchers identified 33 specific energy-saving actions ranging from weather-stripping of homes and using slow-flow shower heads to reducing laundry temperatures and driving at highway speeds of 55 mph and under.

The actions would appreciably reduce energy consumption and either cost little or offer attractive returns on investment without requiring changes in lifestyle.

But the study said comprehensive marketing efforts that combine mass media promotions, community-based information campaigns and informal social pressures with financial incentives would be required to induce enough American households to make the necessary changes.

PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN

It pointed to the Obama administration's "cash-for-clunkers" program as an example of a promotional campaign that can change behavior through marketing, financial incentives and consumer convenience. The rebate program resulted in the purchase of nearly 700,000 more fuel efficient cars and trucks.

"Our estimates ... provide a reasonable initial guide to what can be achieved by active promotion," the research team led by Thomas Dietz of Michigan State University wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Direct energy use by U.S. households, including nonbusiness travel, is a leading source of greenhouse gases and accounted for 690 millions tons (626 million metric tonnes) of carbon in 2005. That equals 38 percent of U.S. carbon emissions and 8 percent of global emissions -- more than the total emissions of any single country except China.

Dietz, who was joined by colleagues at the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and the U.S. National Research Council, said more energy-efficient habits could cut U.S. household emissions by 20 percent in 10 years.

That would be more than all U.S. emissions from the petroleum refining, iron and steel, and aluminum industries, which are among the largest industrial emitters.

The study said similar savings rates could be achieved in Canada and Australia, where carbon profiles are roughly equivalent to those of U.S. households.

The study sought to gauge the responsiveness of American households by looking at studies of behavioral changes that followed interventions on environmental and health topics.

Researchers also used state, city and community programs implemented in response to the energy crises of the 1970s as a basis for their national estimates.

Simple U.S. lifestyle tweaks key in climate change fight: study

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States could cut greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of France's total annual emissions by getting Americans to make simple lifestyle changes, like regularly maintaining their cars or insulating their attics, a study showed Monday.

If US households took 17 easy-to-implement actions -- like switching to a fuel-efficient vehicle, drying laundry on a clothesline instead of in a dryer, or turning down the thermostat -- carbon emissions could be cut by 123 metric tons a year by the 10th year, the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found.

"This amounts to... 7.4 percent of total national emissions -- an amount slightly larger than the total national emissions of France," showed the study led by Thomas Dietz of Michigan State University's department of sociology and environmental science and policy.

"It is greater than reducing to zero all emissions in the United States from the petroleum-refining, iron and steel, and aluminum industries, each of which is among the largest emitters in the industrial sector," the study said.

But the lifestyle changes come with a much smaller price tag and no great change to the way Americans live.

At present, US direct household energy use accounts for 38 percent of the country's carbon emissions, or 626 million metric tons of carbon -- a whopping eight percent of global emissions "and larger than the emissions of any entire country except China."

To quickly bring down those numbers, the researchers suggested greater focus on consumer behavioral changes and less on efforts to develop new technologies and put in place so-called cap and trade regimes.

The researchers grouped 17 actions Americans could take to reduce carbon emissions into five groups: weatherization, switching to more efficient equipment, maintaining equipment, adjusting appliance setting -- such as the temperature on water heaters -- and modifying daily personal use.

The action with the greatest potential to reduce US carbon emissions was the switch to a fuel-efficient vehicle. That alone would, according to the study's model, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by just over five percent by year 10, or by more than 31 million metric tons.

Weatherizing homes by improving attic insulation, sealing or replacing drafty windows and doors, could cut carbon emissions by 21 million metric tons.

Installing energy-efficient appliances to replace those that have reached the end of their useful life would save nearly 12 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Even seemingly minor steps like not speeding away from a stop sign when driving, regularly maintaining one's car, or turning down the heating at home in the winter to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), could save between four and eight million metric tons in carbon emissions by year 10.

The lifestyle tweaks and positive results don't have to be limited to the United States, either.

Similar percentage reductions are possible in Canada and Australia, which have carbon profiles comparable to that of the United States, while Europe and Japan could save around half of the US level in percentage terms by getting their citizens to make the same changes, the study said.

Climate Change Begins at Home: Small Steps to Cut Greenhouse Emissions Can Lead to Big Results

American homes and their energy consumption account for nearly 40 percent of U.S. emissions, 626 million metric tons of carbon in 2005 alone. But 33 simple actions—ranging from improving the insulation to carpooling—could cut those annual carbon emissions by 123 million metric tons. That savings would more than entirely offset emissions from petroleum refineries, iron and steel works, and aluminum smelters combined.

"We did a careful analysis of the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from changes in energy use by households. We did this by considering not only the hypothetical reduction that would occur if everyone undertook each action but by looking at what is behaviorally realistic," explains ecologist and sociologist Thomas Dietz of Michigan State University, one of the authors of the study laying out the possibilities in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "A substantial amount of energy use in U.S. households is wasted, and there have been successful programs to eliminate that waste."

Based on this analysis of potential emissions-cutting measures—as well as the success of programs to inspire them—weatherizing homes as well as properly maintaining heating and cooling systems could save more than 37 million metric tons of carbon. Boosting average fuel efficiency in 50 percent of cars from 20.8 miles per gallon to 30.7 mpg—and there are at least 26 vehicles available today that would do that, ranging from compact cars to sport utility vehicles—would save roughly 30 million metric tons. Carpooling, energy-efficient appliances and equipment, and even changing the temperature on washing machines and water heaters also add to the effect. And if 25 percent of drivers went back to driving 55 miles per hour on the highway, nearly eight million metric tons of carbon could be avoided each year by reducing fuel consumption 21 percent.

"People are busy, and when you gasp at your energy bill or at the gas pump you don't know what part of that bill is paying for something you want—like heating, cooling and transportation—and what part of it is just wasted," Dietz says. "We need to make it easier for people to make the links and, for some things, like weatherization, help with the up-front costs."

Similar efforts on a regional scale, such as the Hood River Conservation Project, convinced some 85 percent of possible participants to better weatherproof their homes through a mixture of financial incentives, mass media campaigns and other interventions. And the recent national "cash for clunkers" program for trading in old cars for newer, more efficient vehicles was highly popular "because the money was available up front and not as a tax rebate months later," Dietz says. "The paperwork was done by the dealerships not the car buyers, and it was well publicized by the dealers and, we think, by word of mouth," he adds.

Similar efforts to promote solar power in New Jersey, for example, have largely failed because they involve significant paperwork, delays in collecting financial incentives, and incomplete or hidden information. Similarly, programs to weatherize homes as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, better known as the federal stimulus package, may fail because they are not widely known and feature an incentive in the form of a tax credit that could take up to a year to collect. "We have neglected behavioral sciences research on energy since 1980," Dietz notes. "Consumer preferences aren't a given, [or] else there wouldn't be a multibillion dollar advertising industry."

Perhaps the simplest change to make is eliminating so-called "standby" electricity, or the energy needed to run devices, such as televisions, even when they are turned off. The emissions associated with that wasted power amount to an average of more than 94 kilograms of carbon per year for every one of the 111 million households with electricity in the U.S.—more than 10 million metric tons of carbon nationwide every year. A simple power strip that can be flicked off would eliminate all of that.

Climate change: Global issue spurs global protest

PARIS (AFP) – Could climate change spark the first worldwide grassroots movement? Even as politicians dial down expectations for the December 7-18 UN climate talks in Copenhagen, analysts and activists detect a groundswell of anger, channelled through the Internet and voiced especially by the young, demanding action on global warming.

Conventional wisdom says environmental issues wax at times of prosperity and wane when belts are tightened.

But these sources believe that adage no longer holds true in the face of the unique threat posed by climate change.

When the talks to craft a post-2012 climate pact get underway, leaders may find themselves facing a coordinated movement cutting across continents, creeds and class, they argue.

"As evidence mounts of the severity of the threat, civil society groups will be fuelled by the urgency of acting now to avoid the worse consequences of a problem for which future generations will surely hold us accountable," said British expert Peter Newell.

"We can expect the continued and expanded use of all resources available to them -- legal and non-legal, constructive and coercive, national, regional and international," said Newell, a professor at the University of East Anglia in England.

Over the past half-century, broad-based movements -- from civil rights in the United States to anti-missile protests in Europe, "people power" revolts in the Philippines and South Korea -- have been largely confined to national borders.

Climate change, though, cuts across all frontiers. Some regions will be hit earlier and harder than others, but no place on Earth will be spared the greenhouse effect.

Awareness has also been boosted by disasters. Typhoon-driven floods that ravaged east Asia last month drove home the perceived links between warming and extreme weather, even if scientists point out such connections are far from linear.

"There is a growing awareness in developing countries that this issue is impacting them now and that they need to do something about it. That awareness is especially strong in Asia," Yvo de Boer, the UN's top climate official, told AFP.

Then there is the Internet, an infinitely more powerful organisational tool for protest than the cassette tapes, fax machines and roneo-copied "samizdat" leaflets of the recent past.

In authoritarian countries, notably China, it has helped civil society cohere around environmental and climate issues to a degree not tolerated for political and human rights, or trade unionism.

The prospects for a borderless protest movement will be put to the test on Saturday, selected by grassroots group 350.org as a "day of global action" with some 3,000 events around the planet.

The brainchild of US environmentalist Bill McKibben, 350.org takes its name from a warning issued by climate expert James Hansen, who says atmospheric concentration of CO2 must be pegged below 350 parts per million (ppm) to avoid potential catastrophe.

Levels are currently around 385 ppm and on track to bust a 450 ppm threshold previously viewed as safe.

Launched in March 2008, the Web-based network says it has nearly 200,000 activists in dozens of grassroots groups spread across 170 countries.

"It has worked beyond our wildest expectations," McKibben told AFP. "We've basically got the whole world organised, much of it for the first time. October 24 is going to be, by a very large margin, the most widespread day of environmental action ever."

Two demographic profiles dominate among 350.org's rank-and-file, McKibben said: educated youth and people linked by religion.

"I was aware of climate change but didn't know what I could do," Gan Pei Ling, 22, a student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University in Malaysia, said this month at climate talks in Bangkok, where she had come to lobby negotiators.

Meeting a small node of activists in Malaysia gave her the courage to speak out, and 350.org put her in touch with like-minded young people across Asia and beyond.

Gan Pei Ling and hundreds of other 20-something activists who converged on Bangkok -- many sporting T-shirts asking "How Old Will You Be in 2050?" -- see global warming as an injustice toward the poor and the young.

"Older people don't seem to care," said Lokendra Shrestha, a 28-year-old sociology student from Nepal, where vanishing glaciers threaten much of Asia's water supply.

Religion is also emerging as a lightning rod.

"Climate has risen up massively as an issue of concern in religious communities," said Stuart Scott, a former statistics professor from Hawaii who has crisscrossed the globe garnering support for his .

His cause got a big boost when the declaration was included in an ecumenical ceremony at the UN Nations last month ahead of the world's first climate summit.

"It would be a huge mobilising force if people started to frame the issue of climate change in religious terms," noted Newell.

Malawi windmill boy with big fans

The extraordinary true story of a Malawian teenager who transformed his village by building electric windmills out of junk is the subject of a new book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

Self-taught William Kamkwamba has been feted by climate change campaigners like Al Gore and business leaders the world over.

His against-all-odds achievements are all the more remarkable considering he was forced to quit school aged 14 because his family could no longer afford the $80-a-year (£50) fees.

When he returned to his parents' small plot of farmland in the central Malawian village of Masitala, his future seemed limited.

But this was not another tale of African potential thwarted by poverty.

Defence against hunger

The teenager had a dream of bringing electricity and running water to his village.

And he was not prepared to wait for politicians or aid groups to do it for him.

The need for action was even greater in 2002 following one of Malawi's worst droughts, which killed thousands of people and left his family on the brink of starvation.

Unable to attend school, he kept up his education by using a local library.

Fascinated by science, his life changed one day when he picked up a tattered textbook and saw a picture of a windmill.

Mr Kamkwamba told the BBC News website: "I was very interested when I saw the windmill could make electricity and pump water.

"I thought: 'That could be a defence against hunger. Maybe I should build one for myself'."

When not helping his family farm maize, he plugged away at his prototype, working by the light of a paraffin lamp in the evenings.

But his ingenious project met blank looks in his community of about 200 people.

"Many, including my mother, thought I was going crazy," he recalls. "They had never seen a windmill before."

Neighbours were further perplexed at the youngster spending so much time scouring rubbish tips.

"People thought I was smoking marijuana," he said. "So I told them I was only making something for juju [magic].' Then they said: 'Ah, I see.'"

Mr Kamkwamba, who is now 22 years old, knocked together a turbine from spare bicycle parts, a tractor fan blade and an old shock absorber, and fashioned blades from plastic pipes, flattened by being held over a fire.

"I got a few electric shocks climbing that [windmill]," says Mr Kamkwamba, ruefully recalling his months of painstaking work.

The finished product - a 5-m (16-ft) tall blue-gum-tree wood tower, swaying in the breeze over Masitala - seemed little more than a quixotic tinkerer's folly.

But his neighbours' mirth turned to amazement when Mr Kamkwamba scrambled up the windmill and hooked a car light bulb to the turbine.

As the blades began to spin in the breeze, the bulb flickered to life and a crowd of astonished onlookers went wild.

Soon the whiz kid's 12-watt wonder was pumping power into his family's mud brick compound.

'Electric wind'

Out went the paraffin lanterns and in came light bulbs and a circuit breaker, made from nails and magnets off an old stereo speaker, and a light switch cobbled together from bicycle spokes and flip-flop rubber.

Before long, locals were queuing up to charge their mobile phones.



Mr Kamkwamba's story was sent hurtling through the blogosphere when a reporter from the Daily Times newspaper in Blantyre wrote an article about him in November 2006.

Meanwhile, he installed a solar-powered mechanical pump, donated by well-wishers, above a borehole, adding water storage tanks and bringing the first potable water source to the entire region around his village.

He upgraded his original windmill to 48-volts and anchored it in concrete after its wooden base was chewed away by termites.

Then he built a new windmill, dubbed the Green Machine, which turned a water pump to irrigate his family's field.

Before long, visitors were traipsing from miles around to gawp at the boy prodigy's magetsi a mphepo - "electric wind".

As the fame of his renewable energy projects grew, he was invited in mid-2007 to the prestigious Technology Entertainment Design conference in Arusha, Tanzania.

Cheetah generation

He recalls his excitement using a computer for the first time at the event.

"I had never seen the internet, it was amazing," he says. "I Googled about windmills and found so much information."

Onstage, the native Chichewa speaker recounted his story in halting English, moving hard-bitten venture capitalists and receiving a standing ovation.

A glowing front-page portrait of him followed in the Wall Street Journal.

He is now on a scholarship at the elite African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mr Kamkwamba - who has been flown to conferences around the globe to recount his life-story - has the world at his feet, but is determined to return home after his studies.

The home-grown hero aims to finish bringing power, not just to the rest of his village, but to all Malawians, only 2% of whom have electricity.

"I want to help my country and apply the knowledge I've learned," he says. "I feel there's lots of work to be done."

Former Associated Press news agency reporter Bryan Mealer had been reporting on conflict across Africa for five years when he heard Mr Kamkwamba's story.

The incredible tale was the kind of positive story Mealer, from New York, had long hoped to cover.

The author spent a year with Mr Kamkwamba writing The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which has just been published in the US.

Mealer says Mr Kamkwamba represents Africa's new "cheetah generation", young people, energetic and technology-hungry, who are taking control of their own destiny.

"Spending a year with William writing this book reminded me why I fell in love with Africa in the first place," says Mr Mealer, 34.

"It's the kind of tale that resonates with every human being and reminds us of our own potential."

Can it be long before the film rights to the triumph-over-adversity story are snapped up, and William Kamkwamba, the boy who dared to dream, finds himself on the big screen?
