Urbanisation, commercial farms threaten Asia's forests, U.N. warns

BANGKOK, June 18 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Sprawling urban areas and expanding plantations are placing greater pressure on forests and resources in Asia-Pacific, hurting rural communities and exacerbating the effects of climate change, the United Nations food agency said on Tuesday.

The region has the world’s lowest per capita forest area of 19% compared to the global average of 32%, even as the total forest area increased by nearly 18 million hectares (44 million acres) between 1990 and 2015, a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

While some Asian countries have introduced policies to conserve forests and give more rights to indigenous people, the area of planted forest nearly doubled between 1990 and 2015 at the expense of more critical primary forests, it said.

“We are worried about the lack of forest quality in our region – as primary forests are rich in biodiversity – and once that’s gone it’s gone,” said Kundhavi Kadiresan, FAO assistant director-general and regional representative in Bangkok.

“Unfortunately, conservation of forests in one country often just shifts deforestation to another,” she said.

Project aims to quantify worth of forests and marine habitats

SINGAPORE — How much are Singapore's forests, parks, waterways, and coastal and marine habitats worth?

A team of researchers from the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) will try to put a value on nature through the first national assessment to measure and quantify the benefits of Singapore's environment or natural capital.

Natural capital are natural assets that include habitats, living things, water, soil and air. These assets provide "free services" such as carbon storage, coastal protection, food production, air purification.

Some economic and social benefits that countries have today would not be possible without the environment, said NUS Associate Professor Dan Friess at the launch of the three-year Natural Capital Singapore project on Thursday (Aug 16).

"But we don't often consider the environment as an asset because it is providing all these things for free. We tend to take it for granted, especially in accounting systems where it is easier to account for economic capital," said Assoc Prof Friess, the co-lead principal investigator of the project.

The project is funded by the National Research Foundation and also works with public agencies such as the National Parks Board (NParks), Housing and Development Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The team's researchers include biologists, ecologists, economists, architects, geographers and software engineers.

Dr Lena Chan, senior director of NParks' International Biodiversity Conservation Division, said policymakers need to know what types of ecosystem services Singapore has, the externalities and the free benefits that people are unaware of, among other things.

"Every minute we sit here, breathing in and out, we need oxygen. But do we ever measure the amount? What do we pay for our oxygen? Trees provide it but we don't have a value for it," she added.

The benefits of natural capital can be quantified in monetary terms and the socio-cultural value people place on nature, said NUS Assistant Professor Roman Carrasco, one of the researchers.

The monetary value would be based on people's preferences, the willingness to pay for the benefits of natural capital, and the cost of replacing a particular type of natural capital, for instance. The socio-cultural valuation would be derived from how people think nature defines their identity, community and help them lead a more fulfilling life, he added.

Given Singapore's small land area, urban development and planning decisions sometimes compromise the country's natural capital, said the Singapore-ETH centre in a press release.

The researchers for this project will look into terrestrial, and coastal and marine habitats here. They will study the current health of these habitats, whether the benefits of these places are accessible to all – for example, are there enough parks in an area where people are keen to use them – and prioritise certain ecosystems and areas to protect.

Their work will involve conducting surveys to gather people's views on these habitats, collecting field data and working with published literature. They will also use information on the Internet and social media to see how people are using green spaces. Photos of vegetation and trees found on Google Street View for instance, can determine how much shade they provide.

An interactive digital planning tool will also be developed to help planners and developers visualise data on the benefits of natural capital by the end of the project.

For policymakers deciding if they should redevelop a green space, the tool could provide information on the impact of different construction methods, and the thermal comfort of a place should the green space be removed, among other things, said ETH Zurich Professor Adrienne Gret-Regamey, who is also the project's co-lead principal investigator.

It should also be able to reflect the economic value of the green space and redevelopment works, as well as the social and cultural value Singaporeans place on the space.

A current prototype of the tool is able to use existing data to map out places that have sufficient or insufficient person to green space ratio, she noted.

This project is believed to be the first national-scale assessment of the benefits of nature in an urban tropical country. Similar studies have been conducted in temperate climates such as the United Kingdom.

Ms Hwang Yu-Ning, deputy chief executive officer and chief planner at URA, said the authority hopes the project will result in a more evidence-based approach to the value of greenery.

The Singapore Index on Cities' Biodiversity is one of the existing tools to manage natural capital. It is a self-assessment tool for cities to evaluate and monitor the progress of their biodiversity conservation efforts.

There have been other studies here that have tried to determine the monetary value of selected benefits provided by natural capital. For instance, scientists from NUS and Singapore-ETH Centre found that HDB units near parks or street trees commanded higher resale prices.

SINGAPORE - An ambitious project to quantify all the benefits provided by Singapore's natural environment was launched on Thursday (Aug 16), aiming to provide a framework for developers to assess the trade-offs between development and conservation.

The project will determine the economic, social and environmental benefits of the country's forests, parks, waterways, and marine habitats. The effort to study the nation's "natural capital" will take three years.

"In spite of the national effort towards greening the city-state, we still need to know more about how to incorporate nature into holistic planning at a national scale," said a spokesman for the Singapore-ETH Centre, one of the project's leaders.

For example, trees can lower urban temperatures through providing shade and transpiration - when water evaporates from leaves, stems and flowers. While the effect of trees on temperature can be measured easily, other advantages they bring may not be as well-known.

Trees also help to slow storm-water runoff and help soil to absorb more rainwater, which reduces the strain on Singapore's drainage network. Furthermore, forests provide outdoor recreational possibilities that positively impact physical and mental health.

The National University of Singapore is the other project leader, and the two organisations will bring together architects, biologist, ecologists, economists, geographers, and software engineers.

The team will create a framework to define Singapore's most important ecosystems, determine their benefits and agree on tools to measure them.

They will then assess the current state of the country's land, coastal and marine habitats, quantifying their economic, societal and environmental benefits.

With this information the team will programme a tool for planners and developers that can both visualise data on the benefits of natural capital and simulate the impact of various scenarios on Singapore's natural capital.

Singapore-ETH Centre principal investigator, Dr Dan Richards, said: "This will equip planners and developers to make better- informed decisions when faced with development-environment trade-offs, and also identify opportunities for the stronger incorporation of natural capital into our urban landscape."

Professor Adrienne Gret-Regamey, one of the lead principal investigators of the Natural Capital Singapore project, said: "Besides providing the framework and tools to guide policy, our team seeks to share knowledge on natural capital and bring about a greater awareness and appreciation of what nature has to offer."

Malaysia: The joys and benefits of observing nature

IMAGINE yourself as a child with low-speed Internet connection at home. You can’t play online games or watch videos. What do you do to keep yourself entertained?

For Universiti of Malaya (UM) undergraduate Tan Kai Ren, the answer was to join his neighbourhood friends explore their backyard every evening after school.

“I have always had an interest in nature and the environment since I was in primary school. My backyard truly opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of biodiversity as it is connected to the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve, a 1,182.07ha forest under the management of Universiti Putra Malaysia.

“After taking my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams, I became involved in several environmental non-governmental organisations, such as Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT), WWF-Malaysia and EcoKnights, which gave me a better understanding of environmental conservation and further fuelled my motivation to pursue this field,” said the third-year ecology and biodiversity student at UM.

Tan’s latest foray in biodiversity-related activities not only satisfied his love for nature but gave him global recognition in the world of urban biodiversity conservation.

At Malaysia’s maiden showing at City Nature Challenge 2018 — an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe — Tan came out as top observer.

Besides Tan, three other Malaysians made the world Top 5 observers at City Nature Challenge 2018. Second place went to Thary Gazi, a PhD candidate and entomologist at UM, fourth place went to Affan Nasaruddin, founder and project officer of Water Warriors, a UM Living Lab; while Benjamin Ong of UM’s Rimba Project took fifth place.

“Observations basically means the number of observations that have been made throughout the four days of the challenge. I made 4,872 observations throughout the period,” he said.

The City Nature Challenge 2018 was carried out from April 27 to 30 in almost 70 cities around the world, all mobilising their residents and visitors to go out and document nature.

The Klang Valley was the first Malaysian and Southeast Asian urban metro area to participate in the challenge. Coorganised by the Rimba Project and UM’s Water Warriors, the Klang Valley City Nature Challenge (KVCNC) aimed to reconnect urban communities with nature and advocate for urban wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

A total of 685 Malaysians participated. At least 300 of these were school students. The event spanned the entire Klang Valley, defined as the sum of 10 municipalities: Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Klang, Sepang, Putrajaya, Ampang, Selayang and Kajang.

To enter the challenge, participants had to download an app, snap a photo of flora or fauna and post it on a specified website.

There were three types of participants: observers, species finders and identifiers. Observers are those who have contributed images or records of flora or fauna. Species-finders are those who are able to find different types of species, while identifiers could identify or name observations made by not only themselves, but also others.

“When Rimba Project founder Benjamin Ong approached me to be part of the team to organise the Klang Valley City Nature Challenge 2018 in Malaysia, he said the goal of the event was to give us baseline data of urban biodiversity in the Klang Valley.

“The data we have collected can now serve as a complimentary checklist of species composition as it is collected by many amateur scientists, which might be useful for actual research work,” he said.

Recalling the effort he put in during the four-day challenge, Tan said despite juggling his final year project with the preparation, it was well worth it.

“During preparation, KVCNC team members were already aware of the goals we needed to achieve for this year, even though this will be our first year participating. Therefore, months before the event, I started to practice using the iNaturalist app to observe and record the flora and fauna around me. The practice gave me a certain advantage compared with other users as I am more familiar with the user interface.

“Nonetheless, the reason for my success is when our team realised that we can upload observations in bulk onto iNaturalist on the second day of the challenge. This allowed us to make more observations in the field by reducing the time needed to upload individual observations.

“Besides that, by minimising my travel on the last day of the event, I managed to do intensive observations around University of Malaya, and recorded almost 3,000 observations on that day alone. This is essentially aligned with the core idea behind the City Nature Challenge, which encourages citizens to map the flora and fauna surrounding them instead of entering the wilderness,” he said.

On whether the challenge had a significant impact in terms of biodiversity and conservation in Malaysia, Tan said it would be an overestimation to say so.

“However, with the help of the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI), we managed to organise an interschool competition as a pilot project to encourage students’ involvement in biological science, with an endorsement from the Education Ministry. We envision that the partnership between ASTI and the Rimba Project will have larger influence towards more schools from cities all over the country in the upcoming year.

“Only then can we evaluate the impact of citizen science towards the conservation of biodiversity and determine its pros and cons,” he said.

On future plans, Tan said he would like to be involved in sustainable living and educating people on possible sustainable lifestyles.

“I believe that when people are better informed about the harm we can do towards the environment in our daily lives, we can indirectly save many vulnerable habitats that are prone to pollution and destruction.

“I really hope that I could one day contribute to changing certain policies to strengthen enforcement against wildlife trafficking. Championing urban farming and sustainable food sources will also be in my plans, as it will reduce farm land needed in the future, which will reduce deforestation and wildlife habitat loss,” he said.

Oar-some way to explore nature

Sightings of otters in various parts of Singapore might have sent the public into a tizzy last year but for housewife Jenny Tan, 47, it was spotting a barn owl while kayaking along the Marina Reservoir that had her squealing in delight.

She says: "We caught sight of a barn owl perched in a corner beneath the Benjamin Sheares Bridge as well as a sea turtle and some otters too.

"It was a surprise for me to learn that such wildlife can be found in the middle of the city."

Ms Tan was on a guided kayak tour organised by the People's Association (PA) Water-Venture as part of its annual Discovery Series of guided expeditions on water to explore Singapore's flora and fauna.

This year, the series will take participants through three different waterscapes - reservoirs, open seas and mangrove habitats - with mangroves being the latest addition.

There will be nine tours in total, with routes ranging from 3 to 11km in areas including Jurong Lake, Marina Reservoir and Seletar Island.

Each expedition can have up to 100 participants who are split into smaller groups of 10 to 20 and accompanied by volunteer trainers.

Most of the programmes do not require any kayaking experience, but participants need to be older than 10 or 12 depending on the expedition.

Those between the ages of 10 and 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.

The cost starts from $20 for members of the public and $15 for PA Water-Venture members.

The trips will begin later this month and run till August.

Those interested can sign up on the PA website.

Only the Sea Discovery programmes, which takes participants to Seletar Island and Punggol Beach, require proof of kayaking experience.
Participants need to have a 1-star kayaking certificate or must have attended a previous PA's Discovery Series event, or have gone for a kayaking orientation programme.

Introduced in 2013, the Discovery Series aims to let Singaporeans appreciate the wildlife and vegetation along the country's waterways.

For example, during the mangrove tours, you are likely to spot the common mangrove tree api-api putih (Avicennia alba) and wildlife such as the black-crowned night heron as you kayak through Sungei Api Api in Pasir Ris and Khatib Bongsu in Yishun.

The programme began with just the Reservoir Discovery Series. Following its success, Mr Roy Chew, PA WaterVenture's deputy director of the community sports division says other waterscape tours were introduced "to offer participants more opportunities to experience different waterscapes and terrains".

He adds that participation for these water tours has jumped fourfold since 2013 from 99 to 465.

Nature lover Ron Yeo, 40, who will be advising the volunteer trainers, hopes that the expeditions will widen the public's perspective of the diversity of Singapore's natural habitats.

Says the civil servant: "Many are so detached from nature here that they don't realise that there is a great deal of flora and fauna to be found in our own backyard.

"By kayaking through these mangroves and reservoirs, participants can get up close and personal with nature."

Indonesia: Megawati asks Jokowi to regreen city

Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri asked Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to create a green city, like founding president Sukarno once dreamed of.

During a field trip to the Pluit Dam in Muara Baru, North Jakarta, on Saturday, Megawati told Jokowi how her father envisioned the city.

"At that time, most Jakartans were facing economic hardships, but they were able to take care of the trees and plants," she said while passing Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) in Central Jakarta.

Megawati suggested Jokowi planted trees, which could provide habitat for wild birds. "Besides functioning as water catchment area, Banyan tree provide fruits for birds. It's leaves can also absorb carbon dioxide [CO2]," she said.

Megawati also called on Jakartans to plant trees in the yards of their homes and to cease from recklessly leaving trash in their local environments in support for Jokowi's regreening program.

Thailand: Phuket wild boars ravage football-golf greens

PHUKET: A sounder of wild boar has settled on an 18-hole “Football Golf Course” in Chalong as their preferred dining area, but in the pigs’ quest for cuisine, they've left damaging divots on the greens.

“Our course is currently under attack by wild boars, which are rampaging through it at night and ripping up our greens,” said Neil Simmons of Phuket Games Zone, located in Soi Palai (map here).

“You hardly ever see them. They come and go, and the attacks always happen at night,” he said.

The sounder was first spotted about six months ago, and has since ripped large gashes in the greens at holes 7, 8 and 10.

Attempts to snare the big brown boars have been fruitless.

“They’re just too clever,” Mr Simmons said.

“We borrowed a wooden-cage trap from a neighboring pig farmer, but the squealers just didn’t take the bait. I also set down some rope snares, but they avoided those too,” he explained.

Last week, the pig farmer’s dogs bailed up a baby pig, but some of the larger specimens seen roaming around the course have been estimated to weigh 60 to 70kg.

Players are asked to notify course management if they spot any of the porkers.

In the meantime, play on the course continues.

“The damage in the rough areas hasn’t been that bad, but we have had to work hard to smooth out the damage to the greens,” Mr Simmons said.

The greens have been sufficiently smoothed over and no mulligans will be offered for shots that players claim were affected by an uneven surface, he added.

Scientists identify pesky midges

Two different species plaguing Bedok and Pandan reservoirs, but reason for outbreaks still not known

THE researchers studying Bedok Reservoir's midge nuisance have solved a pesky ecological whodunnit.

They now know that two different non-biting species of the tiny insects are the ones responsible for the swarms that have plagued residents around Bedok and Pandan reservoirs for the past couple of years.

But they have not yet worked out the how or why, or how to prevent future outbreaks.

"The first thing you have to know is who's causing the problem, then you can start addressing the issue," said National University of Singapore biologist Rudolf Meier, who is leading a study of the midge problem. The three-year project is part-way through its first year.

The culprit at Pandan is one called Polypedilum nubifer, a common nuisance species that dominates ecosystems almost everywhere it is found.

But at Bedok, the culprit is a fly called Tanytarsus oscillans, a minuscule green species. It has previously been found in Sumatra, India and Japan - but is not known to cause problems anywhere else in the world, said Professor Peter Cranston, the Australia-based midge expert helping with the study.

Identifying the midges is not as simple as looking at stripes or spots, researchers said. It involves staring at the insect's rear end and mouth parts under a microscope to work out whether they really are different from other species.

Prof Cranston said of the Bedok issue: "We don't know what the environmental trigger is yet."

These midges live in the reservoir year-round, but their numbers explode only at the end and beginning of the year. Elsewhere, triggers for a midge swarm can be natural, such as water that goes from flowing to still. Or they can be man-made. For instance, nutrients flow into waterways from deforestation, construction or changing agricultural practices, Prof Cranston said.

But water agency PUB said the water quality in Bedok Reservoir, which is more than 25 years old, is the same as it was before the midge swarms started last year.

Seven ponds in the area collect rainwater from Bedok, Tampines and Tanah Merah, and flow into the reservoir.

Another explanation is that the small fish that feed on midge larvae might have been eaten by larger non-native fish that live in the reservoir.

At Pandan Reservoir, plant roots that dangle from floating wetlands provide a place for these small fish to hide, said PUB biologist Michelle Sim.

Now, the research team breeds midges in the lab and collects data on environmental variables like temperature and water quality to work out possible causes.

Three times a week, the PUB also counts the overall number of midge larvae (of all species) in the water; if it gets above a threshold number, it knows a swarm of adult midges is about to occur.

At Bedok, general preventive measures such as fogging larvicides and scrubbing algae off rocks where midges might lay their eggs are used, and these target all midge species, said Mr Goh Chong Hoon, a deputy director of catchment and waterways at PUB.

In the past few months, there have been only isolated complaints, he said. And he said that currently, there are no warning signs yet of another midge outbreak. "So far, we've been able to keep the numbers low."

Bid to protect 'bird haven' at Bidadari

Nature Society wants part of site slated for new HDB town conserved

NATURE lovers are planning a campaign to protect part of the former Bidadari cemetery, slated to be a new Housing Board town, because it has become a haven for birds - some endangered.

Several ecologists say the area has been observed to support the highest density of migratory birds in forests here, more so than even the Central Catchment Area.

The Nature Society plans to submit a proposal to the authorities this week, asking them to conserve the undulating 24ha grove of trees behind Woodleigh MRT station as a bird sanctuary.

Enthusiasts have also set up a Facebook group to document different species spotted there.

The patch of woodland, formerly the Muslim section of the cemetery, has become overgrown since the graves there were exhumed in the early 2000s.

The society has recorded 59 migratory bird species there, more than at any other site in Singapore. A few are highly endangered, such as the Japanese Paradise Flycatcher.

Hornbills, owls, eagles and parrots are among other birds that have been recorded in the area.

This is particularly impressive given the small size of the area, said Dr Ho Hua Chew, vice-chairman of the society's conservation committee.

He said: "The area is definitely worth conserving because of its importance as a haven for migratory birds coming down from temperate zones in winter."

Ecologist Yong Ding Li's research on the area suggests that it lies "on a migratory pathway used by thousands of birds headed to Indonesia, some that hail from as far as Kamchatka in Russia".

The Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Master Plan 2008 has demarcated part of the area in question as parkland. However, its proposed park boundary differs significantly from the Nature Society's (see graphic).

Whether the conventional notion of a public park will tally with that of the society's proposed sanctuary is also unclear.

But Dr Ho sees this as a good sign. The common location of both proposed spaces means that "a win-win situation" is possible, he said.

Dr Ho pointed out that the area's accessibility makes it especially suitable for nature education. The sanctuary could be "a nature park", he said, and residents could make use of existing paths.

A spokesman for the Housing Board said that in building the new town "it is inevitable that some trees may have to be removed in the process". The HDB said it would consider conservation, other competing interests and public feedback in its plans.

It did not elaborate on the boundaries of the proposed park designated in URA's Master Plan, citing the ongoing tender process.

Dr Wee Yeow Chin, co-founder of the Bird Ecology Study Group, said that the Nature Society should be prepared to compromise and work constructively with the authorities.

The society's Bidadari conservation plan follows a campaign by nature groups earlier this year against construction of a road through Bukit Brown cemetery.

In that instance, the Government paid partial heed, changing part of the road into a bridge to allow wildlife to cross beneath.

Other petitions this year by residents in Upper Bukit Timah, Bedok and Pasir Ris to save woodlands in their neighbourhoods did not succeed.

But back in 1989, the society did convince the Government to conserve Sungei Buloh as a wetland reserve, staving off plans to turn it into an agro-technology park.

Work on the Bidadari site is expected to begin before the year ends. The new town, which may be completed by 2018, is planned to include some 12,000 homes.

The Housing Board's vision for the estate, revealed in July, includes emphasis on the site's existing greenery and past heritage.

SINGAPORE: Some visitors to MacRitchie Reservoir Park were greeted with an unpleasant sight on Monday when they found two wild monkeys trapped in a cage.

One of the monkeys laid dead inside the cage.

Responding to email enquiries, the National Parks Board (NParks) said it has been setting cage traps in strategic locations within the park since last week to capture monkeys following reports of monkey aggression against park visitors.

It said NParks officers check the cages twice a day including weekends to see if any monkeys are captured.

At 10am today, its officers found the cages empty.

NParks said there were fresh bite marks on the dead monkey, and it believes one of the monkeys was killed while they were fighting for food in the cage.

Both monkeys were removed from the park at 5pm and brought to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority. It is understood that the other monkey will be put down.

Channel NewsAsia understands that reports of monkey aggression are not uncommon and may include incidents of scratching and grabbing visitors' plastic bags.

NParks has often warned park visitors not to feed monkeys, as it may encourage them to grab visitors' food and plastic bags.

Feathers fly over bird's early morning call

Some complain that Asian Koel disrupts their sleep, but others sing its praises

WITH its early morning cry of "ko-wel, ko-wel", it is a familiar feature of dawn in Singapore.

But not everyone is singing the praises of the ubiquitous Asian Koel.

Last week, a writer to The Straits Times Forum Page complained that the birds disrupt his nightly rest. He called on the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) to step in. His letter was followed by others yesterday, with one deriding the bird and another fighting in its corner.

But three out of every four Facebook users who subsequently wrote on The Straits Times' homepage had no complaints about the Koel. Some said it showed that their urban residences were truly immersed in nature. Others loved the bird simply for its familiar call.

Teacher Mandy Low, 42, said she used to "wake up to the flute-like music" of the Koel when she lived in Yio Chu Kang. She said: "The lush greenery together with the Koel and other migratory birds... simply brightened my day."

Others wrote in support of the bird, calling it their "resident alarm clock".

Engineer Harinder Singh, 30, who moved to Singapore in 2003, said the Koel brings back fond memories of his childhood years in a village in India, where he grew up hearing its call.

But Madam Low conceded that what was music to some might not be so to others. This was especially so for those whose curtailed sleep literally left them with a headache.

"If I don't get enough sleep, I get headaches and I can't study well," said student Chen Jiawen, 19, who lives in Chai Chee. The Koels start calling from 5am, she said, and their "sharp and irritating" calls wake her up.

The same is true for Ms Jasmine Wong, 35, a Bukit Merah resident. She has had to make do with three to four hours' sleep on some nights because of the Koel's call. "If it is during the day, it's fine, but it's in the middle of the night and it goes on for hours," she said.

The Asian Koel is a large, migratory black bird that has settled here over the past two decades, drawn by abundant food sources such as palm fruit.

It is protected under the Wild Animals and Birds Act, which includes all species except domestic dogs and cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, domestic pigs, poultry and ducks. This means that Koels cannot be trapped, killed or kept without a licence.

Bird experts said they are drawn to residential areas as they are a brood parasite of the house crow, which frequents the same areas as a scavenger.

Koels lay their eggs in the crows' nests. The Koel population here is unknown, as no census has been carried out.

The calls by males of the species are territorial, said Mr Wing Chong, chairman of the Nature Society's Bird Group. Although they may call at any time of day, they stake their first territorial claims in the early morning.

Residents need to be more tolerant, said Dr Wee Yeow Chin of the Bird Ecology Study Group, as the Koels "are part and parcel of the nature in our Garden City".

The AVA said it is working with town councils to remove crows' nests and food sources, and prune trees, to discourage Koels from remaining in residential areas.

It added that "while we are aware that there are Singaporeans who have been inconvenienced... there are also others who enjoy the presence of such wildlife in our environment".

Dr Lena Chan, director of the National Biodiversity Centre, said that Singapore's transformation into a "City in a Garden" means nature can be "part of everyday life for all Singaporeans".

"The more we learn about our rich biodiversity, the more we grow to appreciate it," she said.

Biodiversity in the Singapore story

THE other day, as I stood drying my hands in a Botanic Gardens bathroom, I saw a crimson sunbird flitting about, not 3m from the roar of the hand-dryer.

The common bird is a scarlet, palm-length marvel, right there for the viewing for anyone with a little patience and a good set of eyes.

It's not the only surprise Singapore's biodiversity has in store.

As a tropical island, Singapore has an impressive list of species both resident and visitor - more than 300 bird species, 58 mammal and 68 freshwater fish species.

Its marine biodiversity is even richer. Singapore waters host a third of the world's hard coral species and more than 100 species of intertidal sponge.

Among the species found are some "fellow Singaporeans", such as the rare mangrove Bruguiera hainesii or berus mata buaya, the crocodile's eye in Malay; the Elysia singaporensis, a 3cm, leaf-shaped aquatic slug; and the Johora singaporensis, a highly endangered freshwater stream crab found nowhere else on Earth.

They live cheek by jowl with other introduced species that have decided to settle here and breed.

Some, like the green crested lizard, are pushed further into the forest by foreign competitors such as the changeable lizard.

Who knows what other species have been lost to development? Singapore's mangroves have shrunk from 6,400ha in 1953 to about 500ha today, and field biologists have seen old sites, such as Tanjong Gul in Tuas and Tanah Merah beach, turned into indus-trial areas and runways.

Still, its current diversity belies the line, often used by proponents of further development, that urbanised Singapore is a sterile place.

Arguably, biodiversity in a highly urbanised city-state is a balancing act.

Singapore has one of the world's busiest ports, but it is also carrying out its largest-scale audit of marine life yet to better understand what is out there and how best to protect it.

Why protect Singapore's wildlife, though?

I'd argue that the story of Singapore's biodiversity is really the story of Singapore the city.

Once upon a time, during an ice age, sea levels were much lower than they are today. Singapore the island was physically connected to the greater Asian land mass by a chunk of land called the Sunda shelf. Then, animals could cross from what is now Sumatra to what is now Borneo, or from today's Singapore to Malaysia.

Today, these countries share overlapping sets of land animals, testament that they were once a continuous land mass, just as languages, ethnicities and food dishes Singapore shares with its neighbours point to a common heritage.

Fast-forward a few millennia. Singapore the city has its own rhythms: the shipping port, the hawker centres, schools, offices, buses, trains. Singapore's ecosystems have their own: night, day, the tides, the seasonal bloom of durian flowers, the spawning of coral.

To see all these, one has to get out almost before dawn. Then, flocks of swifts wheel overhead, snapping up insects on the wing. Low tide can be in the middle of the night but is the best time to spot exposed shore life.

Sometimes, nature comes straight to you. Early one morning, I nearly tripped over a pangolin on a MacRitchie nature trail.

Those who study it are a different breed from the rest of us. National University of Singapore biologist Zeehan Jaafar spends her time staring at gobies, small fish the size of an ikan bilis - and they are all brown. As time goes by, she said, they do look different. One spot? Two spots? One stripe? Three?

"I think people like to study the big sexy things, but in terms of biomass, the small ones are very important," she said, referring to the sheer mass of living organisms.

There is a lesson here.

In an ecosystem, just as in a city, every species counts. Not just the big charismatic ones or the flashy pretty ones. The small brown ones are predators and prey for other, larger fish. They are what keep the ecosystem chugging along.

And no one knows what is there until someone bothers to look.

In the last few years, both public and private funding has gone to a comprehensive marine biodiversity survey, which has already revealed several species such as a fat, bumpy anemone that could be entirely new to science.

I may never have seen all of Singapore's organisms alive but it should be a point of national pride to know they are out there. Even the small brown ones.

Today, Singapore is building its first natural history museum in decades.

"It's not about dead specimens," said Professor Leo Tan, a biologist who was chairman of the National Parks Board and director of the Singapore Science Centre and is now helming fund-raising for the new Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

"The dead animal tells me a lot about how they live, how they survive."

Other spaces can be living museums as well, Prof Tan said.

For example, the Labrador Nature Reserve holds the mainland's only remaining coral reef.

Without places like it, "your future generations will never appreciate how far we have come because they will never see what Raffles saw, what Singapore was when he landed", he said.

The story of Singapore's biodiversity, then, is a crucial part of Singapore's history.

"Biodiversity does not observe national boundaries," pointed out Dr Lena Chan, director of the National Biodiversity Centre at NParks.

So just as Singapore negotiates its place in international trade and other agreements, it is also a party to international conservation agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, and has helped come up with an index for cities to gauge how well they are protecting their nature.

Singapore's biodiversity is also clawing itself back. Seeds dropped on farms or kampungs cleared 30 years ago are now mature trees.

Now it must be managed, both to keep it thriving and to slow its approach as plenty of uses compete for the same space.

But where such natural spaces are available, both human and animal life can thrive. And it does so despite the odds, with the building of condominiums next to forest areas and the bustling ship traffic and refinery activity.

Prof Tan likes to tell of sea turtles hatching at East Coast Park several times in the last few years. Human volunteers shepherded them the right way, out to sea.

They may have swum around the world, and East Coast Park may be a flat patch of reclaimed land far too bright at night for their liking, but it makes no difference to them.

In 20 years, provided there is a beach to swim up on, when it comes time for these hawksbill turtles to lay their eggs, they will come home.

This is a Singaporean story indeed.

CRIMSON SUNBIRD: In 2002, this eye-catching sunbird - which could be described as a little red dot and is native to Singapore - won a Nature Society competition for the title of Singapore's national bird.

CROCODILE'S EYE: In 2003, plant expert Jean Yong, then at the National Institute of Education, found one of these rare, slow-growing and highly endangered mangrove species in Pasir Ris. There are only 10 to 12 known specimens in Singapore of Bruguiera hainesii, also known as berus mata buaya, or crocodile's eye in Malay. Conservationists have started a nursery to grow this and other uncommon mangrove species.

A GOBY NICKNAMED ZEE: This goby fish, measuring about 2cm, may be entirely new to science. It was found during a Comprehensive Marine Biodiversity Survey at the Lim Chu Kang mudflats last year and is now being studied by Dr Zeehan Jaafar of the National University of Singapore.

BILL THE ANEMONE: This bumpy anemone was also found in the mudflats of Lim Chu Kang during a biodiversity survey. It is new to science and does not have a scientific name yet.

GREEN CRESTED LIZARD: This bright-green lizard, which grows to half a metre long, was once commonly seen along roadsides and in shrubs. Males have a distinctive head crest. Today, it can still be seen in parks and gardens but its range is shrinking due to the more aggressive, non-native, changeable lizard. It is native to Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, the Philippines and other parts of South-east Asia.

What's a garden city without such sweet twitterings?

THE Asian Koel roosts in Bedok as well, where I live ("It's a big bird and a nuisance, but it's protected" by Mr Daniel Ng; last Saturday). Unlike Mr Ng, their distinct and piercing cries are music to my ears; this is what nature is about - the sound of birds in lush greenery.

If we wish Singapore to be a garden city, we cannot expect to hear no cries of birds and see butterflies fluttering quietly around in the "garden".

It is the cries of birds that make you feel that you are close to nature. Apart from Koels, there are also other big birds that give out various cries, some of which are very melodic.

Surely, one cannot ask the authorities to get rid of them.

If you live near the MRT tracks, as I do, you hear the trains start moving from about dawn, with their rumbling stopping only around midnight.

The din of traffic is also a constant.

Yet, residents must and can tolerate the noise because we want roads and transport facilities to be nearby for our convenience.

To balance such man-made cacophony, we ought to welcome the sweet music of nature.

It's a common bird, so why is it protected?

I EMPATHISE with Mr Daniel Ng ("It's a big bird and a nuisance, but it's protected"; last Saturday).

Like Mr Ng, I suffered too after the Asian Koel began roosting in the trees near my HDB unit in Jurong East more than a year ago.

It would screech loudly and incessantly for several hours every morning, usually starting at about 5am, and sometimes even as early as 4am.

The noise from this bird is as loud as having a car horn sounding just outside your window.

It is impossible to sleep once the bird starts its morning screeching.

Fortunately, the bird has moved a little further from my home in recent months, bringing my family a much needed reprieve.

Still, I always worry about the agony we would have to endure again should the bird move back near my home.

As the Asian Koel appears to be commonly found here and in Malaysia, why does the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) classify it as a protected species?

I have seen it in most parts of Singapore, such as Jurong West, Chinese Garden, Fort Canning Park, West Coast Park, Sungei Buloh, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Thomson Road and Maxwell Market.

When I travel to Malaysian towns like Kuching in Sarawak, Ipoh and Malacca, the Koel's distinct voices are commonly heard there as well.

I hope the AVA can consider removing this noisy bird from the protected list so that long-suffering residents like Mr Ng and myself can finally have some peace and decent shut-eye.

Birds deserve protection

I EMPATHISE with Mr Daniel Ng ("It's a big bird and a nuisance, but it's protected"; last Saturday). I have encountered these Asian Koels in my estate too.

Yes, they were a nuisance, but I was glad that my estate was a suitable place for them to breed. These birds are seasonal and usually breed between March and August.

I have seen the brown and white spotted female and black male in my neighbourhood. In fact, one of the male birds crashed into my window once, and I nursed it until it was well enough to fly off.

Sadly, I do not see these birds, or the kingfishers or the woodpeckers, in my estate anymore due to the loss of habitat.

So, I count Mr Ng fortunate to be living amid natural greenery and to have seen these birds, as many Singaporeans have not.

Let us adapt and tolerate these protected birds.

THE Asian Koel is a member of the cuckoo order of birds ("It's a big bird and a nuisance, but it's protected" by Mr Daniel Ng; last Saturday). I like the calls of these birds, especially early in the mornings and evenings.

To me, they signify the start and end of a day. It is nature's way of telling us the order of things.

To live near lush greenery amid such creatures is a blessing. Just as we, as humans, have a right to life, so too do these beautiful creatures.

Perhaps Mr Ng should take a moment to understand and explore the lush surroundings he lives in and appreciate the biodiversity.

I hope the authorities and the public can leave the birds alone and conserve that piece of lush greenery.

It's a big bird and a nuisance, but it's protected

I LIVE in an HDB estate in Queenstown surrounded by lush greenery.

Unfortunately, for over a year, my estate has been invaded by Asian Koels, which are large black birds with a distinct and piercing cry.

Their loud and aggressive cries begin as early as 5am and continue throughout the day.

As a result, my family and I have had to put up with having our sleep disturbed.
When I first wrote to my town council last November, I was informed by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) that the bird is protected under the Wild Animals and Birds Act, and no further action will be taken unless the bird poses a health hazard to our community.

The AVA offered to trim the trees to reduce their roosting areas.

As there was hardly any improvement to the situation since then, I complained to the town council again.

The reply: Such noise issues are prevalent in HDB estates everywhere and town councils are collectively consulting the AVA for a solution, since the bird is a protected species.

Why is this bird a protected species and what is the AVA's plan to resolve the problem?

The Malaysian Nature Society Supports Plan For Educational Park In Wangsa Maju

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) has lent support to a proposal by residents of Wangsa Maju Section 10 to oppose new residential development in the area and create an educational park, instead.

In a statement here Thursday, MNS Selangor branch chairman Henry Goh said the park could help children in the area to continue to enjoy fresh air, study the rich bio-diversity in the forest and live a healthier lifestyle.

The Wangsa Maju township, which covers about 400ha, was developed in the early 1980s, from the former Wardieburn Estate in Setapak.

Goh said, little patches of greenery in the Wangsa Maju Section 10 forest were surprisingly rich in biodiversity and should be used for nature-based activities such as trekking, bird-watching and nature photography.

He said MNS had recorded several unusual birds in Wangsa Maju, including the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Forest Wagtail, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird and Rufescent Prinia, and they were unlikely to be found if the forest was cleared.

Goh said, open spaces should be conserved as they contained as much natural vegetation as possible, to not only satisfy the need for recreational space but also provide ecosystem services such as moderating the climate, preventing soil erosion and retaining excessive rain water.

"Man-made parks, playgrounds or sports complexes do not give the same benefits," he said.

According to the KL City Plan 2020, only 6.5 per cent of the total land area in the city had been gazetted as "open space", defined as any land reserved as "a public garden, park, sports and recreation ground, pleasure ground, walk or as a public space".

However, Goh said the National Urbanisation Policy had set a target to "provide adequate public open spaces by the adoption of a standard of two hectares per 1,000 urban population".

At present, he said Kuala Lumpur only had 0.36ha per 1,000 people and this compared poorly with cities such as London (4.0ha per 1,000 people), Melbourne (2.0ha) and Toronto (2.0ha).

"In order to attain the targeted 2.0ha per 1,000 people ratio by 2020, the coverage of open spaces will have to be increased from the current 6.5 per cent of the total area of KL to 18 per cent (taking into account the population growth projection for 2020). This target can be achieved if we reserve our remaining green areas as gazetted open spaces," he said.

What works in the forest may not work in a garden

WHILE it is laudable that the Bird Ecology Study Group will compile an archive listing more than 200 species of flora and detailing birds that frequent them ("Matching trees and birds"; Oct 6), planners such as the National Parks Board should exercise prudence and care when using such resources to decide what and what not to plant in our parks and gardens, in their effort to attract fauna.

The finding that the common mahang, a tree found in our forests here, draws more than 20 bird species to its fruit does not recognise the fact that a tree growing in a forest, when grown in our gardens and parks, might not attract an equal number of bird species.

Birds that are forest-dependent will not visit the same mahang tree grown in a garden or park that is outside the forest.

If the fruits of the mahang tree draw the liking, too, of the noisy Asian glossy starlings or mynahs, we might even inadvertently propagate more roosting sites for these community roosting birds - a scenario we do not want.

The common mahang tree is also well known for attracting ants to its leaf stalks.

The presence of ants and the consequences when one unwittingly touches them, or if they drop on someone standing below the tree, also need to be taken into consideration.

The safety of the public is of paramount concern.

While we would certainly like to see a "City in a Garden" full of life and biodiversity, we must also be cognisant of the fact that what works in one place might not work in another.

No one size fits all.

Even lizards and butterflies have their own niches and will not readily adapt to a habitat unfamiliar and foreign to them.

Certainly, a lot more experimenting and study of what we want to plant has to be done first before we embark on planting any one species of flora.

Plant the right trees or risk attracting the wrong birds

THE Bird Ecology Study Group should be commended for compiling an archive that will list more than 200 species of flora and detail the birds frequenting them ("Matching trees and birds"; Oct 6).

But planting a common mahang tree outside the forest environment will not attract the same species and number of birds. This is because forest-specific birds like the cream-vented bulbuls, red-eyed bulbuls and red-crowned barbets will not move out of the forest habitats to urban parkland to forage.

Planting food trees outside the reserves may instead attract the more adaptable Asian glossy starlings and mynas, whose populations the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority is trying to control.

Botanists know that many of the wild scrubs and trees do not grow well or even survive outside the forest without the support of the ecosystem. Such trees are not used in our parks and open spaces. On the other hand, fig trees, with their root systems, are destructive to buildings, homes and roads.

The best way to protect biodiversity is to conserve their habitats, which cannot be replicated. You cannot "grow" back a primary forest.

Hospitals, community development councils, schools and corporations have been drawing from the database of the National Parks Board and the Nature Society (Singapore) for many years now to create butterfly- and bird-friendly trails, gardens and open spaces. Let us hope the Bird Ecology Study Group's archive can supplement the existing databases for the greater good.

Orchard Road: Less of a bird street?

THESE residents just refuse to be evicted. Nothing much, it seems, has prevented the mynahs of Orchard Road from calling it home.

It was reported in The Sunday Times yesterday that the latest attempt at ridding the shopping strip of the mynahs - deploying a hawk - has failed.

The mynahs have been the bane of retailers and shoppers there since 2008, drawing complaints about their droppings and the noise they make.

Ecologists and bird control specialists said the authorities might want to consider using sound waves, water or nets to disperse and trap the birds.

Removing the trees with dense crowns where the mynahs roost in the evenings may be another way.

Mr Subaraj Rajathurai, co-founder of the Bird Ecology Study Group, favours replacing the trees with other varieties that have sparser canopies that do not attract roosting birds.

"If they did it carefully in phases, stage by stage, it would be a solution in the long term," he said.

But that would be "an extreme solution", said Nature Society president Shawn Lum.

Replacing the existing trees may solve the mynah problem, he said, but would lessen shade cover for pedestrians and "completely change the character of Orchard Road". He asked: "Is that what we want?"

Hoisting nets high up between the trees to trap the mynahs would work, said ecologist Yong Ding Li. But he cautioned that if the stakes needed to prop the nets up were to fall, they may pose a danger to pedestrians.

Bird control firm Mastermark said sound waves would not effectively deter the birds, while a sprinkler system would inconvenience passers-by.

None of these methods is a silver bullet, said Mastermark manager Gloria Ngoi. A combination of methods to "displace and relocate the birds would be a very good option", she added.

Dr Lum, though, questioned whether the mynahs should be considered a problem at all, unless they pose a public health risk.

"Where else in the world can you go where you've got these modern, sleek buildings, and wild birds roosting outside?" he asked.

"To me, it adds to the glamour of Orchard Road."

When contacted, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority said it has commissioned a study of the mynah population here, which started in June. Findings from the study will determine the next move, said a spokesman.

Hawk no match for pesky mynahs

Orchard Road's hawk patrols have failed. It turns out that the bird of prey is no match for the pesky, noisy mynahs plaguing the shopping strip.

It is the latest attempt to fix the bird nuisance that has failed, and for business owners there it is back to the drawing board.

Mynahs have been bothering retailers and shoppers since 2008, after the Somerset carpark was redeveloped and the trees felled.

The birds moved from that roosting spot to the area near Cathay Cineleisure Orchard and The Heeren, and an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 descend at dusk, especially between 6.45pm and 7pm.

People have complained about noise and droppings that strike pedestrians, cars and walkways. So far this year, the authorities have received 13 reports about the bird nuisance.

When earlier efforts flopped, the Orchard Road Business Association hit on the idea to bring in the hawks last year, hoping that regular hawk flights would shoo the mynahs away.

Jurong Bird Park was happy to help, and provided a hawk and handler for three test runs from September last year.

Alas, the big bird was found to be intimidated by the large flock of mynahs, said park general manager Raja Segran.

He thinks there are other reasons why the idea could not take off, though some might suspect these are just a hawk's excuses:

The mynahs' new surroundings meant the hawk needed a long time to adjust;

The thick-canopied trees made it difficult for the bird handler to keep contact with the hawk;

Vehicles could knock down the hawk.

"The movement of the crowd and noise from vehicles along that stretch made the hawk very distracted," he said. "The flow of traffic on Orchard Road made it too risky to fly our birds there."

Just in case anyone thinks it might all be a case of a cowardly hawk, he also had this to say: "Birds of prey are persistent hunters, and if they decide to go after a prey the pursuit can sometimes lead to accidents."

The main thing, though, is that the mynah numbers proved overwhelming.

In the trials, which included releasing the hawk onto a tree, it was found that at first the hawk frightened the mynahs off.

"But after a while, the mynahs were seen coming back to the tree where the hawk was, as if very curious to see what bird it was," he said.

It proved too much for the intimidated hawk.

In 2009, several Orchard Road malls installed sonic devices to scare the birds away. That did not work. The use of chemicals to get rid of the birds was deemed inhumane.

Using birds of prey to solve bird nuisance problems has worked elsewhere. In Britain, two hawks, accompanied by their handlers, successfully drove seagulls away from a mall in Exeter. They did four flights a week for 20 weeks.

For now, mynahs rule in Orchard Road. And the search is on for the next best idea.

Matching trees and birds

Bird lovers setting up online archive so as to encourage biodiversity

BOUGAINVILLEAS, commonly seen along expressways, may be colourful but some critics have said they do not attract birds.

However, bird-watchers have observed that two species of sunbirds regularly forage in the woody vine.

This information and other facts will soon be compiled online to provide a useful tool for the authorities to expand biodiversity in Singapore.

Compiled by the Bird Ecology Study Group, the archive will list more than 200 species of flora and detail the birds frequenting them - whether to forage, nest, feed on fruit and nectar or bathe in rainwater on the leaves.

With this information, planners can plant a more diverse range of trees and know the bird species that would flock to them.

The archive is the result of seven years of observations made by about 400 contributors to the group, formed in 2005.

It is expected to be launched in a few months' time on the group's website and will be continually updated. Dr Wee Yeow Chin, 75, a former president of the Nature Society and a retired botanist-turned-bird champion, heads the group.

Citing a notable finding from the archive, he said the common mahang, a tree found in forests here, has been observed to draw more than 20 bird species to its fruit, yet "we in Singapore have never used it in our gardens and parks".

He said: "These are the finer points of the uses of plants - what aspect attracts the birds."

Dr Wee wrote on the group's website last week that Singapore's successful transformation into a Garden City happened stage by stage, dictated by the needs of the time.

While the priority at first was to line roads with shady trees such as the angsana, planners later began choosing trees for their colourful flowers and the wildlife and birds they would attract.

But for many years, said wildlife consultant Subaraj Rajathurai, 49, the group's co-founder, everybody from planners to landscapers was going for the "same plants, attracting the same fauna... creating a monoculture".

But he added that the tide has begun to turn over the past three years and that planners are opting for a wider variety of trees that will create more biodiversity.

The group's archive is an important resource, he said, and he hopes planners will tap on it.

Mr Subaraj said birds are a major indicator of the health of an ecosystem, hence the relevance of the archive. "When trees attract birds, they may also attract other species like lizards and butterflies," he said.

National Parks Board director for streetscape Oh Cheow Sheng said the online archive will be a welcome resource. He added that the board has planted specific trees and plants in parks and gardens to attract more fauna.

Mr Subaraj, who has worked with the board on the City in a Garden efforts, agreed that Singapore is "well on the road" towards creating an island with flourishing biodiversity.

"City in a Garden should never be just a catchphrase. When you say a garden, it should really be a garden - full of life, full of biodiversity," he said.

New Frog Species with 'Weird' Croak Identified in New York City

In the wilds of New York City — or as wild as you can get so close to skyscrapers — scientists have found a new leopard frog species that for years biologists mistook for a more widespread variety of leopard frog.

While biologists regularly discover new species in remote rain forests, finding this one in the ponds and marshes of Staten Island, mainland New York and New Jersey — sometimes within view of the Statue of Liberty — is a big surprise, said the scientists from UCLA, Rutgers University, UC Davis, and The University of Alabama who worked together to make the unexpected discovery.

"For a new species to go unrecognized for all this time in this area is amazing," said UCLA Professor Brad Shaffer, from UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and UCLA’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Shaffer is one of the authors on the paper announcing the discovery.

"Many amphibians are secretive and can be very hard to find, but these frogs are pretty obvious, out-there animals," said Shaffer, who is also the director of the UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science. "This shows that even in the largest city in the U.S. there are still new and important species waiting to be discovered that could be lost without conservation."

In newly released research available online in the journal "Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution," scientists used DNA data to compare the new frog to all other leopard frog species in the region and determined that it is an entirely new species, soon to be named by the researchers. The unnamed frog joins a crowd of more than a dozen distinct leopard frog species. The newly identified wetland species likely once lived on Manhattan, and though it’s now only known to live in a few nearby locations, Yankee Stadium in the Bronx would be the bull’s-eye of a target drawn around its current range.

Lead author and evolutionary biologist Cathy Newman was completing her master’s at The University of Alabama while working with Leslie Rissler, associate professor of biological sciences at Alabama, on an unrelated study of the southern leopard frog species when Newman first contacted doctoral candidate and co-author Jeremy Feinberg at Rutgers in New Jersey. Newman asked for help on her project, and in return, Feinberg, an ecologist, asked the geneticists if they could help him investigate some "unusual frogs" whose weird-sounding calls were different from other leopard frogs. 

"There were northern and southern leopard frogs species in that general area, so I was expecting to find one of those that for some reason had atypical behaviors or that were hybrids of both," Newman added. "I was really surprised and excited once I started getting data back strongly suggesting it was a new species. It’s fascinating in such a heavily urbanized area."

Feinberg, on the other hand, who is also a regional expert on amphibians and reptiles and a guest researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory, suspected that the leopard-frog lookalike with the peculiar croak was a new creature hiding in plain sight. Instead of the "long snore" or "rapid chuckle" he heard from other leopard frogs, this frog had a short, repetitive croak. As far back as the late 1800s, scientists have speculated about the "odd" frogs, but until the advent of molecular genetics, it was difficult to prove anything, he said.

"When I first heard these frogs calling, it was so different, I knew something was very off," Feinberg said. "It’s what we call a cryptic species: one species hidden within another because we can’t tell them apart on sight. Thanks to molecular genetics, people are really picking out species more and more that would otherwise be ignored."

The bulk of Newman’s work took place at UC Davis, where UCLA’s Shaffer previously worked. When he found out about Newman’s project, Shaffer was immediately taken with it and encouraged her to pursue it. He offered guidance during Newman’s preliminary analysis of the frog’s mitochondrial DNA, taken from the samples Feinberg and other regional biologists sent of the northern, southern and "weird" frogs. The results were clear-cut: the DNA was distinct, no matter how much the frogs looked alike.

"If I had one of those three leopard frogs in my hands, unless I knew what area it was from, I wouldn’t know which kind I was holding because they all look so similar," Newman said. "But all of our results showed this one lineage is very clearly genetically distinct."

Mitochondrial DNA represents only a fraction of the amphibian’s total DNA though, so Newman knew she needed to do broader nuclear DNA tests to see the whole picture and confirm she had a new species. Shaffer helped her develop strategies for collecting data to compare the new frog to closely related leopard frog species. They shared the data in teleconferencing meetings with Feinberg; Feinberg’s adviser, ecology Professor Joanna Burger at Rutgers; and Rissler, Newman’s master’s adviser at Alabama. Together, the five researchers authored the paper announcing the new species.

"I remember in our lab meetings we were all so excited," Shaffer recalled. "We were trying to be good scientists and not jump to conclusions, but we’re looking at the data going, ‘It’s got to be a new species.’ You feel like you’ve uncovered something unique about the world that’s never been known before."

Habitat destruction, disease, invasive species, pesticides and parasites have all taken a heavy toll on frogs and other amphibians world-wide, said Rissler, program director in the National Science Foundation’s division of environmental biology while on sabbatical from Alabama. Even if you don’t particularly care about amphibians, she said, they are great indicators of problems in our own environment — problems that could potentially impact our own health.

"They are a good model to examine environmental threats or degradation because part of their life history is spent in the water and part spent on land," Rissler said. "They are subject to all of the problems that happen to both of these environments."   

The findings show that even in densely-populated, well-studied areas, there are still new discoveries to be made, said Shaffer, the conservation ecologist. The newly identified frogs appear to have a startlingly limited range, and as the director of UCLA’s La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science, Shaffer sees an immediate link to conservation.

"One of the real mantras of conservation biology is that you cannot protect what you don’t recognize," Shaffer said. "If you don’t know two species are different, you can’t know whether either needs protection."

The newly identified frogs have so far been found in scattered populations in northern New Jersey, southeastern mainland New York, and on Staten Island. Although they may even extend into parts of Connecticut and extreme northeastern Pennsylvania, evidence suggests they were once common on Long Island and other nearby regions but went extinct there in just the last few decades, Feinberg and Burger said.

"The extensive extinctions over the last few decades raise added conservation concerns that must be addressed," Burger said, adding "It is amazing to discover a new frog in Rutgers backyard and the metropolitan area of New York and New Jersey."

"This frog was probably once more widely distributed," Rissler agreed. "They are still able to hang on. They are still here, and that is amazing."

Until the scientists settle on a new name, they refer to the frog as "Rana sp. nov.," meaning "new frog species" — though more often they’re apt to call it "the weird Rana," one researcher confessed.

Although the discovery of a previously unknown species is never routine, it is at least more expected in remote corners of the globe, from the deep Amazon to Pacific atolls. But few people expect to find a new species in New York City! (Except perhaps a mutated cockroach or sewer rat.)

But scientists from UCLA, Rutgers University, UC Davis, and the University of Alabama have just announced the discovery of a new species of frog in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. Scientists have not yet named the amphibian, so they are currently calling it ”Rana sp. nov.,” meaning “new frog species,” although they sometimes call it “the weird Rana,” one researcher admitted.

Observers have noted for some time that certain leopard frogs in the New York and New Jersey area have different-sounding calls to their kin, although it wasn’t until recently that scientists used DNA analysis to confirm that the animals are genetically distinct from the dozen or so other species of leopard frogs.

This newly identified wetland species likely lived on Manhattan, before it was largely drained and paved over, as well as other low spots throughout the five boroughs and beyond.

Today the new species hangs on in part of Staten Island (officially part of NYC). The scientists noted that the center of its current known range is actually near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

“For a new species to go unrecognized for all this time in this area is amazing,” said UCLA Professor Brad Shaffer in a statement. Shaffer is one of the authors of the new paper.

The discovery of a new species of frog in the country’s largest city is a good reminder that scientists have much more work to do to better understand the natural world. It is also a reminder of how important it is to protect the world’s remaining wetlands. In the case of the U.S., more than 90% of our original wetland cover is gone, thanks largely to development.
